The program helps students develop abilities to conduct advanced academic and applied research. Students are also able to broaden their media development skills while being able to work on new media formats and applications. The CMIT program enrolled its first cohort of students in Fall 2008 and currently more than 60 students actively enrolled. The program attracts students from a variety of professions including communication professionals, college faculty and administrators, and public school teachers. Individuals hoping to pursue careers in business, communications, media technology, and education will find this program appropriate for their advanced education. The first graduates of our program in summer 2011 have successfully secured university faculty and other professional positions. Doctoral faculty in IUP'S Department of Communications Media have extensive backgrounds in broadcasting and mass communications, instructional design, organizational communication, and production; including video, audio, photography, graphics, animation, and video game production. Our faculty actively support and participate in the research and scholarly activities of our students. We work closely with students to help them pursue scholarly publications and presentations. Individuals who have already completed their master's degree will take a minimum of 60 additional doctoral credits, 48 course credits and 12 credits for the doctoral dissertation, to complete their Ph.D. in Communications Media and Instructional Technology. The Ph.D. in Communications Media andInstructional Technology prepares students toproduce new media, impact culture in a positive way,and generate research through addressing the threecore areas of the discipline: Theory and Culture,Production, and Research.

PH.D. INCOMMUNICATIONS

MEDIAAND INSTRUCTIONAL-TECHNOLOGY

The doctoral program requires a minimum of 60 credit hoursbeyond the master's—48 credits of classes and 12 credits ofdissertation work. Students will develop a planned programof study in consultation with their advisor and the doctoralco-coordinators. The curriculum consists of required andelective courses in three core areas:

♦ Research—research design and application♦ Theory and Culture—media impact, ethics,

and culture♦ Production—planning, implementing, and

evaluating media products

Graduates of IUP's program also develop the essentialskills of:♦ Conducting research and educational assessment to

evaluate the effectiveness of technology and mediastrategies and to make improvements.♦ Producing scripts, marketing plans, on-line media,

distance education, simulations and games, and otheremerging technologies.♦ Refining skills in producing video, audio, multimedia,

digital imagery, and interactive messages.

FORMATCourses are offered in a blended format combiningclasses at IUP s main campus in Indiana, Pennsylvania,with on-line activity. Main campus classes arescheduled to meet on weekends approximately fivetimes per semester.

Students can take classes on a full-time orpart-time basis. Full-time students take three coursesper semester (including Summer) and completethe coursework portion of their program in abouttwo years. Part-time students take two courses persemester (including Summer) and can complete theircoursework in about three years.

FACILITIESThe program includes production requirements thatimmerse students in media development. To supportthis, department facilities include an audio recordinglab, animation studio, digital television studio, digitalradio station, graphics lab, digital photography lab,digital media institute, and games and simulationscenter. The Digital Media Institute and the AppliedMedia, Simulations, and Games Center both servereal clients through grant and other funding sources.The department also operates and programs theuniversity's broadcast television (WIUP-TV) and radio(WIUP-FM) stations that serve the local area.
