This is IU East
Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

The Indiana University East golf teams practice and play home meets at Highland Lake Golf Course in Richmond.
The Red Wolves’ best is yet to come.
The Indiana University East women’s golf program
tees off its third season with a roster full of fresh
faces and a fresh outlook.
“They ultimately have not carded their best scores
yet,” said Red Wolves coach Von Ebeling, whose
team opens the 2012 spring season March 23 at the
Brescia University Bearcat Spring Shootout on March
23. “With a lot of hard work this spring combined
with having a good attitude, these players could be-
come the building block for the program’s future.”
The Red Wolves have struggled with low numbers
on the roster and big numbers on the scoreboard in
recent seasons, but Ebeling says the players who
remain are tournament-tough and ready to lead a
turnaround.
“Our players come in with potential,” Ebeling said.
“They struggled some in the fall, but they persevered
by having a stick-to-it attitude. They learned how
to manage their emotions, play under pressure and
become tougher-minded.”
The rosterThe Red Wolves will hit the links with an all-newcom-
er lineup.
“We are a very young team,” Ebeling said. “All of our
players are in their first year of college competition.
The players possess the correct etiquette and proper
standards required by the game of golf, but this will
be a learning and growing year.”
Redshirt freshman Asia Mathis (Indianapolis, Ind./
North Central High School) is the elder stateswoman
of the group with a year of practice experience plus
six fall meets.
Freshmen Chelsea Waggamon (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton
High School) and Megan Price (Centerville, Ind./Cen-
terville High School) should be back at full strength
after both battled knee injuries during the fall sea-
son.
Freshman Kristin Smith (Centerville, Ind./Centerville
High School), Price’s high school teammate, joined
the program for the spring semester to help IU East
field a full team.
“We are in the early stages of building this team,”
Ebeling said. “With our numbers low, we need to
stay healthy.”
The scheduleThe Red Wolves will compete in four regular season
tournaments in preparation for a possible appear-
ance at an NAIA National Championship qualifying
event.
The season tees off March 23 at the Brescia Univer-
sity Bearcat Spring Shootout.
IU East will make its first appearances in the Col-
lege of Mount Saint Joseph Spring Invitational in
Lawrenceburg, Ind., and at the Franklin College Lady
Grizzly Invitational.
Season PreviewFresh faces, fresh outlook for women’s golf in 2012
Continued on Page 8
The Red Wolves will make a return trip to Wabash,
Ind., for the Manchester College Spring Invitational.
IU East competed in Manchester’s fall event each of
the past three years.
“We must learn to play under pressure, and we must
find the ability to remain focused and manage our
tension,” Ebeling said. “If we continue to build the
traits of maturity and self-sufficiency, then we should
be fine.”
The goalsEbeling simply looks for the Red Wolves to move up
the leaderboard at each event.
How high can IU East climb?
This much is certain: The best is yet to come.
“If we can shave some strokes off around the greens,
then we will see improvements in our overall scores
for the spring season,” Ebeling said. “I’m looking for
this team to take the next step and become much
more competitive.”

He’s leading one team
on its drive for another
conference title, and he’s
helping another get into
the swing of intercolle-
giate competition.
Von Ebeling was named
head coach of the Indi-
ana University East men’s
and women’s golf teams
before the 2009-10 school
year.
“Von is very passionate about coaching and working
with young people,” IU East athletic director Mark
Hester said. “He is an extremely hard worker and is a
welcome part of the coaching staff.”
Ebeling led the IU East men’s golf team to a second-
place finish in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference during his first season. He also coached
the IU East women’s golf team in its first intercolle-
giate competitions.
Ebeling’s first two IU East golf teams produced an
four all-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
golfers, five academic all-conference honorees and
a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete. The IU East golf
programs also won the national Buffalo Funds Five
Star Champions of Character Award for the 2010-11
school year.
“I joined the athletic department at IU East to help
create a framework that integrates a set of core val-
ues,” Ebeling says.
“I am here to further develop a vision which focuses
on the athletes and systematically teaches them
life skills and character. I’m focused on continuing
to work in an integrity-based program which helps
student-athletes return, academically eligible, each
and every season until graduating.”
Ebeling is a Ball State University graduate and cur-
rently resides in Darke County. He taught math to
special education students in an area school prior to
coming to IU East.
Ebeling traces his athletic roots to age 6, when he
started hanging around the local high school’s cross
country team. He swam competitively as a youngster.
He played football, basketball and baseball at Union
City Community High School.
Ebeling has served as an assistant football coach at
Union City and Mississinawa Valley (Ohio) and as a
basketball coach at multiple levels.

A day-by-day look back at the 2011 Indiana Univer-
sity East women’s golf season. The Red Wolves pro-
duced a pair of all-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference performers.
April 3 - Taking the fifthThe Indiana University East women’s golf team tied
for fifth place out of nine teams in the Defiance Col-
lege Yellow Jacket Spring Invitational. This was the
2011 spring opener for the Red Wolves, and the first
time IU East was able to field a full team for a spring
regular season tournament. Sophomore Courtney
Barlage and redshirt freshman Jordyn Sparks tied for
17th in the 49-player field with scores of 97 on the
par-71, 5,946-yard course at the Kettenring Country
Club. Despite cold and windy weather conditions, the
ladies “hung tough,” according to coach Von Ebeling.
April 8 - Close at homeIU East finished fourth in its own Indiana University
East Red Wolves Spring Invitational. Competition
remained close throughout the day, with the women’s
title decided by just seven strokes, and the top three
women’s players separated by only two shots. IU East
was able to take 10 strokes off of their previous team
score, but the other teams in the women’s field also
shot some of their best scores of the spring. Courtney
Barlage and freshman Holly Miller tied for 7th place,
each shooting scores of 95.
April 19 - All-tourney finishThe Red Wolves left the women’s Kentucky Intercol-
legiate Athletic Conference meet with two all-tourna-
ment team members: Holly Miller and Jordyn Sparks.
Miller finished fifth with a two-day score of 204 on
the par 72, 6,248-yard Golf Club of the Bluegrass
women’s course. Sparks finished with a two-day
score of 220. “The team shot consistent scores for
the two rounds…I’m proud of the way they chal-
lenged this course and picked up valuable experi-
ence helping our women’s golf program forward,”
said coach Von Ebeling.
