2011-12 Volleyball Guide

This is IU East

Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.

In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.

The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.

Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.

The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and

laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.

The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

Chuck Mosey Memorial GymIndiana University

morial Gym at Seton

Catholic High School

in Richmond during

the 2010 season.

The Red Wolves played

four home matches at

Mosey Memorial Gym during the

2009 season. Players and specta-

tors enjoyed the experience in the

intimate setting. Fans got a chance

to be right on top of the action, and

the crowds were the loudest of IU

East’s 2009 season.

“The games were fast and fre-

netic, and the atmosphere was

electric,” the Seton Catholic High

School “Cardinal Captions” news-

letter reported. “I think all would

agree that the whole experience

was a real ‘win-win’ for both IUE

and SCHS.”

Mosey Memorial Gym opened

during the 2008-09 school year.

The gymnasium has a capacity of

about 500 fans. Locker facilities

are available for home and visiting

teams. The gym boasts an on-site

television studio for production of

IU East volleyball telecasts.

Seton Catholic High School is

located at 233 South Fifth Street

in Richmond.

“Our goal is to pack that place and

have people standing up,” Brown

told the Richmond

Palladium-Item. “I

think that would be

outstanding.

“It’s a great gym and

it’s a great gym to play

volleyball in.”

IU East’s volleyball

teams previously

played at sites such

as Union County High

School, the Richmond Athletic

Club and the Richmond High

School Tiernan Center.

Athletics SuiteThe Indiana University East ath-

letic department is housed in a

10-room suite in Springwood Hall

on the IU East campus.

The athletics suite opened in Feb-

ruary of 2010. The space includes

offices for all coaches, a study

hall/team meeting room, storage,

laundry facilities and a training

room.

Iowa - or bust!

The Indiana University

East volleyball team has

the final stop of the NAIA

volleyball season in mind

as the 2011 season ap-

proaches.

The Red Wolves made

history in 2010 with a

39-4 season that includ-

ed a 26-0 start, a program-best No. 27 national rat-

ing, a repeat Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Con-

ference tournament title and a return trip to the NAIA

Volleyball National Championship Opening Round.

The top 24 teams in the 36-team NAIA national tour-

nament advance to Sioux City, Iowa, to determine the

national champion. IU East’s 2010 season ended one

match short of an Iowa trip. The Red Wolves want to

make that Iowa trip for the first time in 2011.

“We’ve been at the doorstep twice, the first round of

the national level,” said IU East coach Charlie Brown.

“Our goal is to bust through and get to Iowa and play

at the final site of the national level.”

“We struggled to gain respect at the national level

last season, and this season we are out to claim that

respect!”

The traveling partyIU East assembled an impressive crew for its 2011

journey.

Nine of IU East’s 10 rotation players from the end of

the 2010 season return. The Red Wolves also wel-

come a talented five-player recruiting class.

“We have tremendous depth this season, more so

than ever before, and we are going to use this to our

advantage both in practices and matches,” Brown

said.

“Everyone is working hard. Most importantly, we

have an experienced and hungry team.”

Brown looks to his two junior All-Americans to navi-

gate the road the Iowa.

Setter Lauren Crump (Indianapolis, Ind./Scecina Me-

morial High School) led the NAIA in assists per game

and became the first IU East athlete in any sport to

earn second-team All-America honors. Crump won

KIAC and American Volleyball Coaches Association

Northeast Region Player of the Year accolades.

Middle hitter Breezy Strete (Troy, Ohio/Troy High

School) was among the NAIA leaders in hitting per-

centage and kills per game. She repeated as an NAIA

honorable mention All-American.

Brown reports both appear poised to perform at an

even higher level in 2011.

The team’s other junior, libero Kristin Waechter (Mun-

cie, Ind./Daleville High School), also will serve as a

team captain in 2011. Waechter is on pace to break

most of IU East’s defensive records by the end of this

season.

IU East enters the 2011 season with three seniors

after playing the past two years without any seniors

on the roster.

Outside hitter Courtney Flory (New Paris, Ohio/

National Trail High School) is poised to become IU

East’s first four-year NAIA volleyball letterwinner.

Flory proved her worth in 2010 when she stepped

into the starting lineup and performed well after inju-

ries created an opening on the front line.

Right side hitter Paige Lay (Bloomington/Normal,

Ill./Parkland College) was the American Volleyball

Coaches Association Northeast Region Newcomer of

the Year after a big finish to her 2010 season. She

posted some of the best hitting statistics in the na-

tion.

Defensive specialist Sarah Berlatsky (Thomasboro,

Ill./Parkland College) excels in serve receive and adds

to the Red Wolves’ pack of skilled back row players.

Four sophomores played big roles in IU East’s big

2010 season.

Middle hitter Caitlin Burroughs (Richmond, Ind./

Northeastern High School) broke the Red Wolves’

match, season and career records for solo blocks as

a freshman en route to all-conference and all-region

honors.

Outside hitter Sarah Shilling (Warsaw, Ind./Warsaw

Community High School) emerged as a capable all-

around player and is expected to provide more of-

fense for IU East in 2011.

Defensive specialist Meagan Stoker (Celina, Ohio/

Celina High School) established a school record for

serve receive percentage in 2010 and will be a regu-

lar in the Red Wolves’ back row in 2011.

Ariel Cox (Ansonia, Ohio/Mississinawa Valley High

School) is capable of playing any spot on the floor.

Five newcomers join the ride in 2011.

Junior “front row specialist” Taylor White (Greenville,

Ill./Kaskaskia Community College) can play any front

row position after earning all-conference honors for

her NJCAA Division I team in 2010.

Redshirt freshman Kasey Stolle (Richmond, Ind./Ball

State University) joined the program late in the sum-

mer to make a strong defense even better.

Freshman outside hitter Brooke Sahm (Indianapolis,

Ind./Roncalli High School) was the top hitter on a

squad that was ranked among the top 60 high school

teams in the nation.

“This year, WOW, from a strength of schedule per-

spective we’ve taken a giant step and a risky one,

but very calculated!” Brown said. “We will be playing

12 to 15 of the top-ranked teams in the country this

season. Every outing will be a dogfight - or should I

say a wolf fight!

“There are no easy wins on our schedule this year.

How we perform in the heat of battle will further de-

fine us as a program at the national level. We strug-

gled to gain respect at the national level last season,

and this season we are out to claim that respect”

IU East opens the 2011 regular season Aug. 18 at

the Grace College Ramada Plaza Tournament.

The Red Wolves’ home opener is Aug. 24 against

Marian University at Seton Catholic High School. IU

East will play 10 home matches at Seton’s Chuck

Mosey Memorial Gymnasium.

The highlights of the home schedule include a Sept.

14 matchup against Indiana Institute of Technology

and a Oct. 26 contest against 2010 KIAC regular

season champion Asbury University.

IU East also will play these teams that ended the

2010 regular season receiving votes in the Tachika-

ra-NAIA Volleyball Coaches Poll: Aquinas, College of

the Ozarks, Indiana Wesleyan, Shawnee State, Taylor

and Georgetown.

IU East could face other ranked teams in the cross-

over rounds of tournaments.

IU East will host the Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath-

letic Conference Tournament on Nov. 11 and 12 in

the Richmond High School Tiernan Center.

The Red Wolves are the two-time defending KIAC

Tournament champions.

It’s IU East’s first opportunity to host the KIAC vol-

leyball tournament.

The Red Wolves will play 15 KIAC regular season

matches leading up to the KIAC tournament. The

league has moved to a double round robin for the

2011 season.

Brown will look back on 2011 as a successful season

if the Red Wolves achieve all of those goals.

“It won’t be easy,” Brown said. “We’ve told them

numerous times that this year, it’s not a sprint but

a marathon, and we want to be the ones still stand-

ing down the homestretch. By the second half of the

season we will be battle tested, hopefully healthy and

more focused than ever on the most important goals

we set this year.”

IU East was the top choice in the KIAC preseason

poll and ranked 26th in the NAIA’s national pre-

season poll.

“It’s exciting volleyball,” Brown said. “These kids are

playing for IU East and the community, and we want

their support.

“It’s good volleyball, and it’s their chance to see a

team that is working hard toward the national level.”

The husband and wife

team of Charlie and

Londa Brown took over

the Indiana University

East club volleyball pro-

gram in 2005 when the

program was at its lowest

participation level.

The goal was to turn the

IU East program around

and to build a respectful

and successful program the school and community

could be proud of. They sought out and recruited tal-

ented athletes who shared the same vision and goals

for the future of IU East volleyball.

The Browns quickly proved they had a winning strat-

egy.

They made history in 2006 when they led IU East to

the best record in the program’s existence.

They again made history early in 2007 by signing

the first official athletic recruit in IU East’s history.

The Browns’ 2007 team set another school record

for wins, finishing 21-3 overall during IU East’s first

year as an NAIA institution.

The next step was to contend for the Kentucky Inter-

collegiate Athletic Conference title. The Browns made

it their mission to build the IU East volleyball pro-

gram into one of the most respected and recognized

programs in the KIAC.

The 2008 season

brought more highlights.

IU East finished second

in the KIAC regular sea-

son standings and in the

conference tournament.

The Red Wolves defeated

multiple NCAA Division

II and NCAA Division III

teams during a 15-17

season.

The IU East volleyball program reached even greater

heights during the 2009 season. The Red Wolves

started 8-0 and won the title at the Grace College

Ramada Plaza Tournament. IU East attracted votes in

the NAIA Coaches Top 25 Volleyball Poll for the first

time. The Red Wolves won 10 consecutive games at

the end of the regular season plus the KIAC tourna-

ment. IU East clinched the program’s first KIAC regu-

lar season and tournament titles during that stretch.

Charlie Brown was recognized as KIAC Coach of the

Year, and the Red Wolves made their first appearance

in the NAIA National Championship.

IU East continued its climb in 2010. The Red Wolves

set a school record with a 26-0 start and went on

to a 39-4 season. IU East repeated as KIAC tourna-

ment champions and made a return trip to the NAIA

National Championship. The Red Wolves finished the

regular season ranked 27th in the NAIA Coaches Top

25 Volleyball Poll, the highest rating in the program’s

history.

The Browns expect the Red Wolves to make more

history in the games and seasons to come.

The Browns share an extensive volleyball back-

ground. They played and coached club volleyball at

various levels in the Ohio Valley Region and Hoosier

Region, as well as in local leagues and tournaments.

Charlie and Londa both still have a great passion

for the game and love to play when time permits. In

addition to their commitment to IU East, Charlie is

a Transportation Manager at Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and

Londa is a Procurement Manager at Neaton Auto

Products.

The Browns currently live in Liberty, Ind., with their

dogs, Brodie and Hannah.

pions. IU East advanced to

the NAIA Volleyball Na-

tional Championship for the

second consecutive season.

August 20-21 - Perfect startIU East sets the tone for

the season by defending its

championship at the Grace

College Ramada Plaza

Tournament. Lauren Crump

and Madison Qualkenbush

were named to the all-

tournament team. IU East wins 12 of 13 sets in four

wins, including a sweep of tournament host Grace in

the championship match. IU East opened the tourna-

ment with an impressive win against Mount Vernon

Nazarene. The Red Wolves completed pool play with

victories against Huntington University and Bethel

College.

August 25 - Historic comebackIU East rallies from a two-game deficit for the first

time in the program’s history for a 24-26, 23-25,

25-20, 25-16, 15-10 win at No. 32 Marian Univer-

sity. It’s IU East’s first win against a team ranked in

the top 40 in the Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches’

Poll. “What a match,” coach Charlie Brown said. “It’s

a coach’s nightmare, but also a coach’s dream, to

come back from two games down.”

August 27-28 - Coming up AcesIU East wins the University of Rio Grande Aces in Au-

gust Classic with five victories in two days. Paige Lay

and Allison Nicley were named to the all-tournament

team. “It could have been any of our players, the way

they all contributed,” Brown said.

September 1 - Taming the WildcatsIU East wins in four games at Indiana Wesleyan

University. The Wildcats were coming off of two wins

against teams ranked in the top 27 in the national

poll.

September 10-11 - Birthday treatAllison Nicley celebrates her 19th birthday by earn-

ing MVP honors at the Defiance College Invitational

as IU East wins the team title. The Red Wolves beat

Lourdes College in the championship match after

topping Defiance, Concordia University (Mich.) and

Manchester College in pool play. The Red Wolves

move to 15-0 and establish a new school record for

best start to a season. Breezy Strete breaks IU East’s

career record for kills during the Defiance College

Invitational.

September 15 - Home court advantageIU East completes a season sweep of Indiana Wes-

leyan with a four-game win in the Red Wolves’ home

opener. The Red Wolves pulled out the win even

though Allison Nicley went out with a leg injury dur-

ing the first game. A big and boisterous home crowd

serves as the “seventh man” in IU East’s comeback.

“An amazing crowd,” said Courtney Flory. “I’ve never

seen a crowd this big at IU East. When they cheered

it pumped us up even more and we were able to pull

out the win.”

September 23 - What layoff?IU East ended an eight-day break between matches

with a three-game win at NCAA Division II opponent

Urbana University. The Red Wolves won the first eight

points and impressed the Blue Knights with eight

blocks on a night when the temperature in the Ur-

bana gymnasium likely was in the 80s.

September 25 - Everybody chips inThe Red Wolves got contributions from all over the

roster in three-set home wins against Midway Col-

lege in the morning and Rochester College in the

afternoon. The Red Wolves tied the school record for

fewest points allowed in a game with the 25-4 score

in Game 2 against Midway.

September 28 - Still buzzing alongIU East beats Cedarville University’s Yellow Jackets

in four games to improve to 20-0.

October 2 - Perfect in any time zoneIU East sweeps conference matches against Indiana

University Southeast and Brescia University in Ow-

ensboro, Ky. Lauren Crump ascends to the top of the

NAIA assists per game rankings with 82 assists on

the day. She will lead the nation in assists per game

through the end of the season.

October 6 - In, out and still unbeaten.IU East returns home and sweeps Huntington Univer-

sity in about an hour.

October 9 - Payback time!IU East sweeps Montreat College and Union College

in a tri-match at Union. Union had swept IU East in

2009.

October 15-16 - A split decisionIU East’s 26-0 start ended at the USF/Asics Munci-

ana Invitational at Asics Munciana Volleyball Center

in Yorktown. IU East started the tournament with a

four-game win against Shawnee State University. IU

East then took its first loss of the season, a three-

game setback against 12th-ranked Indiana Tech. The

Red Wolves had won 33 consecutive regular season

matches dating back to 2009. “Its tough to take a

loss at any point,” said Red Wolves coach Charlie

Brown. “But it’s one thing if you take a loss against

a team that outplays you as opposed to a team you

don’t play well against, and Indiana Tech just out-

played us. If you are going to get beat, it might as

well be the No. 12 team in the nation, and then move

on.” IU East moved on to beat Calumet College of St.

Joseph to open the event’s second day before fall-

ing against 26th-ranked Madonna University in four

games in the tournament’s final match.

October 19 - Pink out!IU East beats NCAA Division II opponent Urbana

University. The Red Wolves take the court in pink

uniforms as part of a “Pink Out” event for breast

cancer awareness. Most of the crowd in Mosey Gym-

nasium also wore pink.

October 22-23 - A St. Louis sweepIU East beats Harris-Stowe State University, Cincin-

nati Christian University and St. Louis College of

Pharmacy during a weekend trip to St. Louis. The

Red Wolves improve to 31-2 and establish a new

school record for wins in a season. Caitlin Burroughs

sets a new school record for solo blocks in a single

match with six against Cincinnati Christian.

October 26 - Tough finish to a classic matchIU East falls 25-15, 19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 18-16

against Asbury University in a match that decided

the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

regular season title. IU East had a 16-match KIAC

winning streak snapped. It was the longest fifth

game in IU East history. “We just made errors at the

wrong times,” Brown said. “We didn’t win the big

points, and that was the difference.”

October 30 - New streak beginsIU East bounces back from the loss against Asbury

with sweeps of Lourdes College and Huntington Uni-

versity in a tri-match at Huntington.

November 4 - The century mark!IU East earned the 100th victory in the program’s

NAIA history with a 27-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15

win against the University of Northwestern Ohio at

Seton Catholic High School. The Red Wolves reached

the 100-win mark in less than four full NAIA sea-

sons. “It’s special. That’s the best way I can put

it,” said Brown. “It’s a tribute to the kids and their

dedication and commitment and the perseverance of

the coaches. These girls want IU East volleyball to

be successful.” Paige Lay puts away 25 kills - de-

spite stitches in her hand, the result of a fall down

some stairs - to set an IU East record for kills in a

four-game match. Caitlin Burroughs breaks IU East’s

school record for solo blocks in a career.

November 6 - Record finish to regular seasonIU East beats Mountain State University and Berea

College in a home tri-match to conclude the regular

season with a 36-3 record. Lauren Crump breaks

her own school record for assists in a season. Breezy

Strete breaks her own school record for kills in a

season.

November 12 - Promising postseason startIU East tops St. Louis College of Pharmacy in the

Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tourna-

ment quarterfinals at Brescia University.

November 13 - Define them as champions!IU East wins its second consecutive KIAC Tourna-

ment title with a 25-27, 25-16, 25-14, 25-19 win

against Asbury University in the KIAC tournament

championship game at Brescia University. “A great

win,” said Paige Lay, who led IU East with 21 kills

in the title match. “We were out to get them. This

time everyone stepped up and came up big, and we

showed what we have.” IU East reached the cham-

pionship match with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 win

against Indiana University Southeast in the morning

semifinals. The Red Wolves picked up additional

hardware before the presentation of the team tro-

phy. Lauren Crump was named KIAC Player of the

Year. Lay, Caitlin Burroughs and Breezy Strete joined

Crump on the all-KIAC team. “We got through the

biggest day of the season,” Brown said. “The reward

is tenfold. The girls will have so many memories, and

we’re not done. We’ve got at least one more stop,

and we hope to get to Iowa.”

November 14 - Good news on Selection Sunday.IU East rises to 27th in the Tachikara-NAIA Volley-

ball Coaches Top 25 Poll, the highest ranking in the

program’s history. The Red Wolves also learn they

will face Shawnee State in an NAIA National Cham-

pionship Opening Round match.

November 19 - Banquet night.IU East arrives in Portsmouth, Ohio, to prepare for

an NAIA National Championship Opening Round

match at Shawnee State University. IU East fresh-

man Ariel Cox is honored as IU East’s recipient of

the NAIA Champions of Character Award during a

banquet prior to the IU East-Shawnee State match.

November 20 - Memorable season comes to an endIU East’s 2010 volleyball season ends with a 25-20,

25-17, 25-18 win loss at Shawnee State University

in an NAIA National Championship Opening Round

match. The Red Wolves lost the last seven points

of the first game and never seemed to recover. The

contest had shaped up as a close matchup. Shawnee

State was 26th and IU East 27th in the Tachikara-

NAIA Volleyball Coaches Top 25 Poll. IU East had

beaten Shawnee State in four games during the

regular season. “We made adjustment after adjust-

ment, but when the wheels fell off, we took a hard

crash,” Brown said. IU East’s season ended in the

NAIA National Championship Opening Round for the

second consecutive season.

December 6 - The awards roll in!Lauren Crump is a second-team Tachikara-NAIA Vol-

leyball All-America Team selection and Breezy Strete

is an honorable mention pick. Crump is the first

second-team NAIA All-American in IU East history.

Strete is the first repeat All-American in IU East his-

tory. IU East also puts four players on the American

Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region

team. Crump is named the Northeast Region Player

of the Year. Strete, Paige Lay and Caitlin Burroughs

join Crump on the all-region team. Lay is named the

Northeast Region Newcomer of the Year. “This speaks

volumes to the overall commitment and dedication

that these girls and their teammates have given to us

all season long,” Brown said. “They have worked their

tails off from day one and are very deserving of this

recognition.”
