ISU leads the all-time series with the Leathernecks 11-10 in Terre Haute, but is 4-16 in Macomb. Indiana State’s last win against Western in Macomb came in 2012 with a 23-7 victory at Hanson Field. TURNING THE CORNER Coming off an 0-11 season a year ago, the Sycamores were picked to finish last in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with just one vote not assuming the worst. The Sycamores are now 6-4, clinching a winning season, and have won four-straight games for the first time since 2014. SYCAMORES CRACK THE TOP 25 Indiana State is the 8th different MVFC team to earn a Top 25 ranking this year as ISU clocks in at No. 24 in the AFCA coaches poll this week, the first time the Sycamores have been ranked since 2016. In the league’s 34-year history, there have been four winless teams, including Indiana State in 2017. ISU’s the first to be ranked in the year following a winless season. Notably, six MVFC teams received mention this week. Among conferences, the MVFC is the top-rated league in the FCS (Sagarin Rankings), and also ranks ahead of a two FBS leagues, including Conference USA (both the East and West divisions), and the Sun Belt (West Division). SCORING TURNAROUND FOR THE AGES What the difference one year can make. The Sycamores have won four of their last five games as they head into the final week of the regular season with a road contest at Western Illinois. In 2017, the Sycamores lost all five games during this stretch of current success by a combined 163 points. Flash forward to 2018 and ISU owns a 34-point advantage over the same five teams – Missouri State, Southern Illinois, Youngstown State, South Dakota and nationally-ranked Illinois State. Combined that is +197 margin from this year until last year for the Sycamores against those three programs. So not only have the Sycamores upped their win Week twelve GAME NOTES

NATIONAL HONORS FOR BOYLE AFTER SOUTH DAKOTAAfter rewriting the Indiana State record book against South Dakota this past weekend, redshirt junior quarterback Ryan Boyle has been named the STATS FCS National Offensive Player of the Week. The award comes on the heels of Boyle earning Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week as well as picking up his fourth Newcomer of the Week honor this season. The Urbandale, Iowa native also earned national recognition from College Football Performance as the publications National Performer of the Week.

Boyle accounted for a program record seven touchdowns in a 51-48 triple overtime victory against South Dakota Saturday. He tied an Indiana State single-game record with five passing touchdown, including three during overtime. Boyle, Jonas Griffith and Jerry Nunez each earned MVFC weekly honors in week ten following their performances during the Sycamores’ 43-17 victory at Youngstown State, the league office announced Sunday.

THE STREAK COMES TO AN ENDIndiana State football snapped a 14-game MVFC losing streak dating back to 2016 after defeating Southern Illinois, 24-21 to spoil the Saluki Homecoming. The win marked the first MVFC win for head coach Curt Mallory and the fourth straight against SIU in Carbondale. A COMING OUT PARTY FOR CATON AND JONES II?With injuries in the receiver core for the Sycamores, both Dante Jones II and Dakota Caton have seen their usage surge -- and they have taken full advantage of the opportunity. Both Jones II and Caton recorded their first receiving touchdowns of their Sycamore careers against South Dakota before coming back and scoring touchdowns to down the No. 22 ranked Redbirds to extend ISU’s winning streak to four games. On the season Jones II has 16 catches for

206 yards and two scores while Caton has 18 catches for 190 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Caton has also been the primary return man for the Sycamores on kickoffs after week one when he returned a punt for a touchdown. On the season, he has 30 returns for 655 yards for a 21.8 yard per return average.

COMING INTO HIS OWN AT TIGHT ENDSophomore tight end Zach Larkin has recorded catches in each of the last four of the last five games while catching a pair of touchdowns in two games after missing the first three games of the season due to injury. He grabbed his first career touchdown catch against Youngstown State before snagging a two-yard score in the second overtime period versus South Dakota. On the season, Larkin has five catches for 41 yards.

CONSISTENCY UP FRONTAfter filling in the pieces on the offensive line a year ago, the Sycamores have found consistency up front with five players. Tate Leavitt, Isaiah Edwards, Wyatt Wozniak, James Lang and Kevin Kcehowski have started each of the 10 games this season up front and have been key parts to the Sycamore rushing attack. ISU has rushed for 2,511 yards after just 1,185 yards in 2017.

A MAINSTAY AT CENTERRedshirt junior Wyatt Wozniak has been the steady hand on the Sycamore offensive line. Wozniak is one of the most experience interior lineman on the roster after seeing game action in five contests in 2016 including three starts. Wozniak is the lone Sycamore on offense that started every game at the center position in 2017. Wozniak was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive of the Week after a superb game at SDSU. Wozniak, a Cypress, Texas product, led the charge from his center position, as the Sycamores racked up 569 total yards of offense Saturday at No. 3 South Dakota State -- the most yards since the Sycamores put up 671 yards against Quincy in 2013.

THE DYNAMIC DUO AT LINEBACKERKatrell Moss and Jonas Griffith have each tallied over 100 tackles this season for the Sycamores and are the lone duo to reach the feat in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, sitting at No. 1 and 2 respectively in the conference rankings. The duo also recorded 100+ tackles in 2017, making them the first Sycamores to record 100+ tackles in consecutive seasons since 2011-12 when Aaron Archie and Jacolby Washington did so.

JONAS GRIFFITH A PROBLEM FOR OPPOSING OFFENSESLB Jonas Griffith is a force to be reckoned with on the Sycamore defense. In 10 games this season, Griffith has 123 tackles (73 solo) to lead the Missouri Valley Football Conference. He has recorded 18 tackles in consecutive games in weeks seven and eight and has had eight or more tackles in all but one game this season. His 12.3 tackles per game rank fourth nationally while his 7.3 solo tackles per game ranks tops in the country. Griffith sits just 33 tackles away from 300-career tackles with a year of eligibility remaining. Griffith is currently 14th in program history in single season tackles (123), needing just five more to enter the top-10.

ran or passed, Griffith seemed to be in the play defensively. He picked up an important sack in the fourth quarter when the Penguins went for it on fourth down to put the ball back in ISU’s hands. Griffith iced the game late in the fourth with an 80-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown -- the first defensive score of his career.

2017 IN REVIEW FOR GRIFFITHGriffith led the Sycamores in tackles with 107 in 2017 -- recording a career high 15 vs. SIU, 13 vs. EIU, 10 at Missouri State and nine at Tennessee. Griffith finished the season ranked third in the Valley in total tackles. Griffith played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and returns as the third-best tackler on ISU’s roster with 37 total tackles in 2016. Griffith helped lead ISU to a near-upset at No. 14 Youngstown State, where he led the Sycamores with nine tackles and his first career interception at a crucial juncture in the game.

OFFENSES MUST BE AWARE OF KATRELL MOSSLB Katrell Moss is second on the team and third in Valley play with 113 tackles this season, tied for the 22nd most in a single season. Green ranked third on the team with 66 tackles and led the team with 12 pass breakups a season ago. This season, Green has 47 total tackles (33 solo), eight pass breakups and 2.5 tackles-for-loss for 8 yards.

SHUTOUT TO OPEN THE SEASONIndiana State recorded its first shutout victory since the 2015 season during its opener against Quincy, The Sycamore defense was stout throughout, allowing just 159 yards of total offense. Following 60-minutes of action, the defense allowed just 2.8 yards per play, 81 rushing yards and 78 yards through the air. ISU also came away with a turnover while forcing two forced fumbles and a pair of sacks.

DEFENSE PUSHED TO ITS LIMIT IN 2017The Sycamore defense was pushed to its limit last season, allowing 45 points per game. That number may not be a great indicator of how good ISU’s defense was as the unit was on the field nearly 10 minutes more than its counterparts on average due to a struggling offense. The Sycamores managed to put up just 90 points over 11 games and were held scoreless twice. In all, the Sycamores converted just 25 third downs on the year and held the worst third-down conversion rate (25-of-110) in the country.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

NUNEZ EARNS MVFC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEKNunez was money for the Sycamores during a 43-17 win at Youngstown State. The junior kicker hit 3-of-4 field goals in the victory. Trailing 7-0 to Youngstown, Nunez nailed a 41-yard field goal to put the Sycamores on the board, before adding a 30-yard field goal in the second. The Naples, Florida native pushed the Sycamore lead to 16-10 at halftime after splitting the uprights on a game-long 45-yard field goal with 48 second left in the first half. Nunez was also a perfect 4-for-4 on PAT attempts for the Trees.

NUNEZ HEATING UPEntering his third season as the Sycamore kicker, Jerry Nunez opened the 2018 season a perfect 7-for-7 on extra point attempts against Quincy. Through seven games, Nunez is 40-of-41 on PAT’s and 12-of-16 on field goals. His field goal percentage of 75 percent is second in the MVFC and 31st nationally. Nunez drilled a 48-yard field goal against Missouri State, tying his career long, to pull the Sycamores within 14-10 midway through the second quarter, and then booted a field goal of 19 yards in the fourth quarter to give the Sycamores a 26-21 lead. Nunez was instrumental at South Dakota State, hitting all three attempts, including a 25-yard field goal as regulation expired to send the game to overtime. Nunez also nailed a 20-yard field goal in the first overtime. Nunez drilled two kicks at Eastern Illinois, the first a 22-yarder in the first quarter to give the Sycamores a 20-17 lead and the second, a 25-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to put the game out of range of the Panthers.

Nunez led the MVFC and ranked ninth nationally in 2016 with a 15-of-18 mark in field goals last season. For his efforts, Nunez earned Second-Team All-MVFC and MVFC All-Newcomer honors in 2016, and this fall was just honored as the Preseason All-MVFC selection for kicker. In 2016, Nunez was one of nine kickers in the nation to start the season 7-for-7 in field goals. His 83.3 percentage in field goals in 2016 tied a school record set by Tanner Fritschle in 2012, who also hit 15 field goals on 18 attempts. PUNTING PROGRESS Indiana State brings in a new punter in Travis Reiner with the graduation of Thomas Bouldin. Reiner comes to ISU as a redshirt sophomore from College of the Canyons in California where he earned Second Team All-Conference honors in 2017 after averaging 43.1 yards per punt. He pinned the opponent inside the 20-yard line 21 times and finished with a long punt of 64 yards. Reiner has punted 48 times for the Sycamores this season with an average of 39.0 yards per attempts. He has pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 16 times on the season and forced 11 fair catches. He booted a long of 58 yards to pin Louisville at their own two-yard line during week two. The redshirt sophomore punted four times against Southern Illinois and recorded a 49-yard punt in the second quarter. Against Missouri State, Reiner recorded two punts longer than 50-yards. On the very first possession of the game, Reiner boomed a 57-yard punt to the MSU 27-yard line. On the next possession, he booted a punt of 50 yards to the MSU 20.

NEWCOMER CATON MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACTFreshman Dakota Caton was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, following week one. The Sullivan, Indiana native made his Sycamore debut against Quincy and on his first touch in an Indiana State uniform, he electrified the crowd at Memorial Stadium with a 71-yard punt return touchdown. The touchdown marked the first punt return touchdown in nearly three years for the Sycamores with the last coming by way of Tyler Denton at Missouri State in 2015. Caton ranks ninth nationally and first in the MVFC in combined kick returns (534 yards) and 59th nationally with 21.0 yards per kick return.

SYCAMORES LOSE KEY PLAYERS FOR SEASON

TOUGH NEWS FOR THE TREESHead coach Curt Mallory announced prior to the Sycamores’ week nine game at Youngstown State that senior running back Ja’Quan Keys would hang up his cleats with a season and Indiana State career-ending hip injury during a victory over Southern Illinois. Keys, a native of Hammond, La., who’s family relocated to Indianapolis following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina (Read the feature on Ja’Quan Keys at sycamor.es/TheSmileThatSurvivedTheStorm), threw the final punches during his senior campaign, accounting for 948 yards on 158 carries while etching his name in the Sycamore record book with 13 touchdowns -- the third most in a single season in program history. A Perry Meridian High School product, Keys wraps up his Sycamore career with 1,467 total yards and 16 touchdowns, finishing just 286 yards from entering the top-10 in career rushing yards in program history. After receiving just one carry as a true freshman during the Sycamores’ FCS Playoff run in 2014, Keys missed the entire 2015 campaign with a knee injury. He worked his way back to be a contributor in 2016 and was third on the team with 311 rushing yards and one touchdown on 73 carries as a sophomore. In 2017, he played in 10 games, including three starts and rushed for 208 yards behind LeMonte Booker. The highlight of Keys’ senior campaign will be the reclamation of the championship of the Border Battle with Eastern Illinois. He was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week following a career-high 232 yards rushing on 34 attempts, including four trips to the end zone. It was the sixth-highest single-game rushing total in program history.

A KEY TO SUCCESS FOR THE SYCAMORESJa’Quan Keys entered 2018 with 519 yards’ career rushing yards in two seasons, and with 948 yards after eight weeks, the Hammond, Louisiana native has surpassed the 1,000-career rushing mark. Keys has averaged 135.4 yards per game this season.

Keys finished off Indiana State’s victory at Eastern Illinois with a career-high 234 yards rushing on 34 attempts, including four trips to the end zone. It was the sixth-highest single-game rushing total in program history. He has now eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in four games this season. Keys became the first Sycamore to eclipse the 200-yard rushing mark since Shakir Bell tallied 201 at Tennessee Tech in 2013.

Keys is the first Sycamore to score three touchdowns in one half of football since LeMonte Booker did it in the first half of ISU’s 2015 season opening victory over Butler. He is also the first Sycamore to score four touchdowns in a game since Booker did it against Butler in 2015 and the first Sycamore to record four rushing touchdowns since Bell did it (in the first half) against Youngstown State in 2011.

Keys busted open two touchdown runs at SDSU -- the first a career long 62-yard run in the third quarter, before going for a 57-yard run with 2:08 remaining to play. In total, the Sycamores rushed for 293 yards led by Keys who finished with 159 yards in the game.

coming on a four-yard gain at Illinois State (9/30) and the second at Missouri State (10/28). Thomas caught five passes for 95 yards (19 yards per catch) in four games before being injured against UNI and will miss the remainder of the 2018 season.

MORGAN A DIFFERENCE MAKER -- BUT AN INJURY WILL SIDELINE THE SOPHOMOREWR Rontrez Morgan showed his playmaking ability as a true freshman in 2017 after catching seven passes for 114 yards (16.3 yards per catch) with a season long 38-yard reception coming against Southern Illinois. He had three catches of 25 yards or more and averaged 17.9 yards per kick return, racking up 179 yards on nine attempts. Morgan finished the year with 268 all-purpose yards at 26.8 all-purpose yards per game.

During the Sycamores’ week six trip to South Dakota State, Morgan nearly surpassed his career total. He finished the game with 155 yards receiving and the first two touchdown catches from a Sycamore in the overtime loss to the Jacks. With 155 yards through the air at SDSU, Morgan became the first Sycamores since 2016 to record 150-199 receiving yards in a game. Miles Thompson had a 152-yard receiving game against South Dakota in 2016. Morgan suffered a wrist injury in the first quarter against the Jacks and will miss the remainder of the 2018 season.

COVINGTON OUT AFTER INJURY AGAINST MISSOURI STATETrue freshman running back Christian Covington suffered a career-ending injury against Missouri State during week eight. The Snider High School product put together a solid first year at tailback with 246 yards on the ground and four touchdowns in six games. Covington finishes with 260 total yards of offense and a 4.7 yards per carry average.

HEAD COACH CURT MALLORY

Curt Mallory enters his second season at the helm of the Sycamore football program after being named the 21st head coach in the history of Indiana State on Jan. 23, 2017. “Curt Mallory is a grinder who has coaching in his DNA,” Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales said. “His dedication to developing young men into leaders on the field and in life has been a core piece of his coaching philosophy throughout his career. He will raise the competitive bar and hold all accountable to that end. He is the right person ¬at the right time to lead this program into becoming a nationally recognized school. I am excited to welcome Curt, his wife, Lori, and his three children into the Sycamore family.” Mallory, a 22-year veteran as an assistant coach in the college ranks, is part of one of the more prominent football families in the United States, as he is the son of Indiana University’s all-time winningest head coach Bill Mallory, who coached the Hoosiers from 1984-96. Bill Mallory was also the head coach at Miami of Ohio (1969-73), Colorado (1974-78) and Northern Illinois (1980-83) over an illustrious 27-year coaching career. Mallory also has two brothers in the NFL coaching ranks: Doug, the defensive backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons, and Mike, a special teams coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. “I’m extremely excited to be coming back home to the state of Indiana to become part of the Indiana State University family,” Mallory said. “I would like to thank President Dan Bradley, Sherard Clinkscales and the whole administration at Indiana State for this great honor. This University and the city of Terre Haute are very intriguing to me as a coach, as there is a lot of potential to build a strong football program here. Most of all, it feels amazing to be back in this great state again and work alongside all the wonderful people I know throughout the state.”

In Mallory’s first season in Terre Haute, the Sycamores finished 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with seven games coming against nationally ranked foes. He coached five All-MVFC players in 2017 including linebacker Jonas Griffith and tight end Jacquet McClendon who were tabbed to the Second Team while running back LeMonte Booker, punter Thomas Bouldin and linebacker Katrell Moss were named Honorable Mention. Prior to coming to Indiana State, Mallory was the pass coordinator and secondary coach under former North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl at the University of Wyoming in 2015 and 2016. There, Mallory mentored 2016 Thorpe

Award semifinalist Andrew Wingard, who was a First-Team All-Conference honoree as a sophomore. The previous year in 2015, Mallory helped Wingard and Marcus Epps to nods as Honorable Mention All-Americans.Mallory spent the previous four seasons at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, as a secondary coach under Brady Hoke. There, he worked with several superb defenses, including the seventh-best in the FBS his final year in 2014 that only allowed 311.3 YPG. That same year, Michigan ranked 15th in rushing defense (117.7 YPG), tied for 19th in passing defense (193.7 YPG) and 27th in scoring defense (22.4 PPG). The Wolverine secondary also finished top-15 in the nation in pass defense in both 2011 and 2012. The 2011 defense was an especially impressive feat that first season, as they jumped from 107th in scoring defense in 2010 to sixth nationally in 2011. In Ann Arbor, Mallory had the opportunity to coach current Jacksonville Jaguars safety Jarrod Wilson, as well as help recruit and coach 2016 Heisman Trophy finalist and projected top 2017 NFL Draft pick Jabrill Peppers during his freshman season in 2014. Mallory was the defensive coordinator at Akron for the 2010 season, and before that he spent five successful seasons at the University of Illinois from 2005-09 under head coach Ron Zook (now the special teams coordinator of the Green Bay Packers). Mallory’s first two seasons in 2005 and 2006 were spent as the secondary coach, and his final three years he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator. At Illinois, Mallory was instrumental in one of the best teams in Illini history in the 2007 Rose Bowl team. That year, Mallory’s Illini defense held opponents to under 20 points per game en route to a 9-4 finish. Illinois also ranked second in the Big Ten in passing defense (182.2 YPG) in 2006 and led the Big Ten in sacks and tackles for loss in 2008. Mallory’s 2006 secondary only allowed 11 passing touchdowns and 6.5 yards per pass attempt all season. At Illinois, Mallory’s prized pupil was All-American Vontae Davis, who was a two-time Thorpe Award semifinalist and a 2009 First-Round NFL Draft Pick of the Miami Dolphins. Davis has been a two-time Pro Bowl selection during his NFL career and has been a member of the Indianapolis Colts since 2012. Other notable pupils at Illinois include current Detroit Lions safety Tavon Wilson, a 2012 Second Round pick of the New

England Patriots and a member of New England’s Super Bowl XLIX champion team, and Jeremy “J” Leman, a 2007 All-American linebacker for the Illini Rose Bowl team and current Big Ten Network color analyst. Mallory spent the previous three seasons at Indiana as a secondary coach from 2002-04, which was preceded by one year as the secondary coach at Central Michigan in 2001 and six seasons at Ball State from 1995-2000 in charge of both the linebackers and secondary. Mallory was on staff for Ball State’s 1996 team that went to the Las Vegas Bowl. His coaching career began as a student assistant at Michigan in 1992, followed by two years as a graduate assistant under his father at Indiana in 1993-94. Mallory was a four-year player at the University of Michigan from 1988-91 under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler his first two seasons, followed by Gary Moeller his last two. Mallory was on four Wolverine teams that won a Big Ten title, including three teams that went to a Rose Bowl. His freshman season in 1988 he was on a Rose Bowl champion team that finished the season ranked No. 4 nationally after defeating USC. Mallory capped off his Wolverine career with an interception in Michigan’s 35-3 win over Ole Miss in the 1991 Gator Bowl. Longtime Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who led the Wolverines to a national title in 1997, was Mallory’s defensive coordinator during his playing career. Mallory earned his bachelor’s in sport management and communication from the University of Michigan in 1992, and he finished his master’s in outdoor recreation at Indiana University in 1999. Mallory and his wife, Lori, have three children: sons James and Sam, and a daughter, Margo.

I’d also like to congratulate the Indiana high school coaches because one of your own is coming back.” Don FischerRadio Voice of the Indiana Hoosiers“The Mallory family is one of the great football families in all of the United States. I don’t know of any family more involved in the sport throughout their whole lives. All the Mallory boys not only played but have coached the game and are still coaching at a high level. Bill is still the best coach in Indiana University history. His 13 years here we went to six bowl games, and IU hasn’t come close since and didn’t go again until 2007; the struggle has been mighty since then. We’ve had a couple of other great football fam-ilies pass through here, like Terry Hoeppner and Bill Lynch, whose families are as engrossed as the Mallorys. Without a doubt, Bill Mallory is one of the most respected coaches in the country, and he was revered by all of us who worked with him here. His sons are all class people, and I am still very close with Bill, his wife and the entire family. Every time I went to Michigan while Curt was there it was like seeing an old friend. Curt is a terrific person and coach; the people are going to love him at ISU. I’ve watched Indiana State from afar since I worked there because I loved my time at WVOW; I just had a ball in Terre Haute. I still follow ISU closely, and I

still believe it can take off. I’m also very close to Trent Miles, who I think started to turn this program around, and Mike Sanford kept some of that success going too. I know a lit-tle about Indiana State Football and the background of the people that live there, and I’m really excited for Curt and his family for this opportunity.” Brady HokeFormer Michigan Head Coach (2011-14)“Curt Mallory is a man of unbelievable character and in-tegrity. He is a great teacher and role model for the young men that he has had the privilege to coach. The high school coaches in the state of Indiana have a coach at Indiana State that will be passionate about the relationships Curt and his staff will have with them. The University, the alumni, the fans and the players will be proud to have Curt Mallory as their head football coach.” Jordan KovacsSafety, University of Michigan (2008-12)Five-year NFL Veteran2009 Freshman All-AmericanThree-time All-Big Ten“I had the privilege of playing under Coach Mallory for two years at Michigan. He is undoubtedly one of the best guys I’ve come across in the football world. His enthusiasm and passion for the game is unrivaled and is why he’ll make a great head coach. Good luck, Coach Mal!” Jeremy “J” LemanLinebacker, University of Illinois (2003-07)Big Ten Network Analyst2007 All-AmericanFour-year NFL Veteran“Competitor and character; those are the words that come to mind when I think about Curt Mallory. He loves to com-pete at the highest levels and demands the same from his players, yet knows that the foundation of any program is the character and integrity of its staff and players. He will make Indiana State proud on and off the field.” Bill LynchDePauw Head Coach (2013-Present)Former Butler Head Coach (1985-89)Former Ball State Head Coach (1995-2002)Former Indiana Head Coach (2007-10)“Curt Mallory is an outstanding football coach and a tre-mendous leader of young men. His energy and passion for the game of football is contagious. Curt is a proven recruiter and will represent Indiana State University in a first-class manner.” Bill MalloryFather, Former Indiana Head Coach (1984-96)“My wife and I are coming up to the press conference on Wednesday and are very excited for him. Curt had called me to say a job had opened at Indiana State, and I told him I thought it’s a great move for him. I’ve always had great

respect for ISU like Curt does, and he’s very excited to have the opportunity to be the head football coach. We moved to Bloomington when he was in middle school, he played football at Bloomington South, he went onto play at Michi-gan but then came back with me as a graduate assistant, so he has always had a warm sport for the state of Indiana and football. The key, without question, is recruiting the state of Indiana and making it a hub – which he will do. He will do a thorough job of that in the state, as he has great respect for the football in the state and the coaches, and that is so important to getting those players. Curt is a great people person and he cares about his players. He’s not a person up on a pedestal or with an ego. He’s very caring, and I say that with all sincerity. He’s a down-to-earth and caring individu-al with passion for the game. Most important to him are the people involved; it’s like a family to him. I know he’ll make people understand that they’re important, and together they’ll work to make the program succeed. He has a lot of good positives there that will be good for Indiana State. He’s anxious to surround himself with a good quality staff to make this program succeed.” Mike MalloryBrother, Jacksonville Jaguars Special Teams Coach“I’m thrilled for Curt. He is well-prepared to lead the Indiana State Football program. His passion and attention to detail will serve the Sycamores well.” Tavon WilsonSafety, University of Illinois (2008-11)2012 Second Round NFL Draft Pick (New England Patriots, Pick 48)Detroit Lions Safety (2016-Present)New England Patriots Safety (2012-15)Super Bowl XLIX Champion (New England Patriots)“Coach Mallory is so deserving of this opportunity to be-come the next head coach at Indiana State University. Ever since I stepped foot onto campus at the University of Illinois, Coach Mal took me under his wing. He taught me so much about the game of football, and I credit him for believing in me to become a versatile defensive back. He trusted me as a leader at multiple positions, which has been very beneficial throughout my NFL journey. Coach Mal also helped devel-op me into the man I am today. He was my father figure throughout college, and I know that he will be able to help turn ISU into the next great program of young men and stu-dent-athletes.” Ron ZookGreen Bay Packers Special Teams Coordinator (2014-Present)Former Florida Head Coach (2002-04)Former Illinois Head Coach (2005-11)“Curt comes from a great football family. I played for his father, who was a man of integrity. Curt is a great coach, he cares about his players and will be a great ambassador for the University.”

VALLEY FOOTBALL NOTES

Sunday, Nov. 18The 2018 championship field consists of 10 AQs and 14 at-large qualifiers. The top eight teams will be seeded, receive first-round byes and host second-round games. The 16 other teams will bid to host first-round games. First-round games will take place Saturday, Nov. 24. The FCS Selection Special will air on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 11:30 am CT on ESPNU. It’s a 60-minute show this season.

StreakingNorth Dakota State owns the nation’s longest active winning streak in the FCS at 16 games. The 16-game streak is the second-longest in MVFC history. The Bison, meanwhile, own the league’s three longest win streaks of all time (33, 16, 14).

Playoff Teams with 4 Losses?Thirty-five teams with four losses, including 27 at-large picks, have made the playoffs in the current 24-team format (2013-present). A third of those at-large picks (nine teams) were from the MVFC.

Playoff Teams with 5 Losses? In 2014, Indiana State became the first five-loss team to earn an at-large spot. The Sycamores were 7-5 that year (4-4 in the MVFC). ISU won a first-round game at Eastern Kentucky (36-16) before falling at No. 8 seed Chattanooga in the quarterfinals.

Playoff Teams with 6 Wins?Only three teams since 1978 have earned a playoff at-large spot with only six victories. Idaho was the first in 1995 (6-4). In the current 24-team format, only Western Illinois (6-5 in 2015) and Illinois State (6-5 in 2016) have been selected as an at-large entry with only six wins. Western won a first-round game in 2015 (at Dayton), and Illinois State lost its game in 2016 (at Central Arkansas).

Tough SchedulesMVFC teams hold seven of the Top 9 spots in the Massey Ratings strength of schedule index. UNI, Western Illinois and South Dakota rank 1-2-3. All of the league’s 10 members are rated in the Top 30 in the Massey Ratings strength of schedule. Only four leagues occupy spots within the Top 20 (MVFC has nine top-20 teams.)
