January/February 2019

Here we are starting a New Year. I hope, that all of you had a great holiday season with family. I have had a few curve balls, but my holidays went pretty well. I have been thinking of what I would like to do this year with my GWRRA family. Many ride ideas have come to mind and yes, I have been working on a site for SWWU. I have a great candidate working just clearing up a few details. An announcement will be ready by WR.

WR room reservations need to be completed before the 1st of February in order to get the special rate. The schedule is out and there will plenty of diverse activities for attendees. Also, we have had a burst of vendor space requests, so we will have a variety of vendor displays.

This month is usually when chapters begin planning their riding schedules. When you have them completed, please give them, to our district coordinator so we can get them posted on the internet. Using these tools to broadcast our activities helps us get out in front of members and non-members. This will help us keep our membership stable and hopefully improve it. Also, this gives many of our members a chance to ride as much as they want any where they want. We love riding in groups, as many of us, have done this for years, this just opens more opportunities for all of us. We have tried to make changes to accommodate our diverse membership with opportunities to keep us busy. Close to home is one, one day activities is another and we are exploring another ideas also.

It is late and I must go, see you at WR or a chapter meeting. I have been known to pop up all of a sudden.

Yea, Yea…..I know Thanksgiving was last month but I’m just getting around to thinking about the past year and how thankful I am for all the support Debbie and I have received as your Educators.

The Indiana Rider Ed team is a fantastic group of folks, truly dedicated to safe riding and continuing education. They put in a lot of time, effort, and their own money in making the various rider ed activities a success. They travel to all parts of the state to teach riding courses where they have to spend at least an extra day getting the riding range setup for the classes. An we can’t forget our wives in this mix. Their support in putting on the various classes tremendously adds to the classes success.

YOUR Indiana Rider Ed Team is comprised of

Chuck and Chris Jacobs – They are Team GWRRA Rider Education Coordinators responsible for most of the northeast states. Chuck is an ARC and TRC instructor and they have actually hosted rider classes in their home. Chuck is also a University Trainer.

Mike and Joyce Nelson – Mike and Joyce are Assistant District Educators who go out of their way to support the program. You’ve seen them at the various rallies working the Rider Ed table. Mike is a TRC instructor and has been instrumental with working with Ivy Tech in Fort Wayne allowing us to use their fantastic facilities for rider courses.

Dennis and Debbie Junker – Dennis and Debbie are Assistant District Educators (through the end of the year when they will be stepping down) who have been LONG time rider ed champions. Dennis is a Master Instructor Trainer (MIT) and is qualified to teach ARC and TRC, along with two and three wheel trailering courses.

John and Laura Kuehl – Both John and Laura are GWRRA do-da’s! They are both on the GWRRA staff as Rider Educations assistants, Laura is a GWRRA Assistant for the Medic First Aid (MRA) program, and both John and Laura are Indiana’s MFA coordinators. John is also a Master Instructor.

Mike and Penny Kadinger – Mike and Penny while being Chapter Directors for A2 are also Indiana’s only other GWRRA MFA instructors. They travel all over the state giving MFA classes to keep us safe and our levels current.

Next time you see these selfless, dedicated folks please give’m a hug or shake their hand and tell them thanks for what they do.

Until next time…..

-15 Frick’n degrees! Are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!? I try to ride all year but that’s just too darn cold! So I get to walk by my bike on the way to the car to go to work. Not the way I like to start my day. Talk about depressing! sigh

Well there are things we can do as we impatiently wait for the thaw. One of the things is to check out our gear. The last thing we want is to get a nice day only to find out our gear shrunk over the winter! Let’s start from the top and work down.

Helmet – Check it for visible signs of damage. It doesn’t take much of a hit to compromise the integrity of the impact absorbing material. Check the manufacture date. Manufacturer’s recommend replacing their helmets every 5 or so years because the impact foam starts to break down. Do a clarity check on your visor and clean/replace as necessary. Give your helmet liner a good sniff test and give it a wash if your eyes start to water!

Jacket – Make sure it still fits! Check the armor for signs of breakdown. Make sure all the zippers, snaps, and Velcro are in good shape. Give it a wash to make sure the reflective materials can be seen. Make sure it’s not ripped or torn.

Gloves – Make sure your fingers aren’t popping through and are completely covered. Make sure they’re tight enough to stay on during a get off. Check them for cracking and getting thin. Make sure they’re still comfortable and you can work all the controls.

Pants – Make sure your riding pants can still be buttoned and zipped up! If you have riding pants, make sure the armor is still good. Check them for cracking and getting thin. Make sure they’re still comfortable and you can work all the foot controls.

Boots – Check the soles for wear and cracking. Same for the uppers. It’s a good time to re-apply water proofing and put a coat of polish on them for protection. Make sure they still fit so you can ride all day in comfort.

Rain Gear – Now’s a good time to pull it out to get some air. You can also check for rips/tears and make sure it still fits. Better to find out now before you need it!

If you get your gear all cleaned up, checked out, or replaced you’ll be all set for that first warm day (at least double digit temps!) to get our bikes out and hit the road!

Until next time……
