Every year, Fall Latin Day marks the beginning of a new year for the Indiana Junior Classical League. Latin clubs from across the state, whether they are already affiliated with the IJCL or not, are invited to an Indiana college or university to kick-start the year. This year, lovers of the classics made their way to Indiana State University in Terre Haute to learn more about the classics and the organization that runs Fall Latin Day as well as many other events throughout the year.

Dr. Steven Stofferahn, Associate Professor of History, welcomed the crowd to ISU early on the morning of Nov. 11. Attendees then mingled in an icebreaker to get to know their peers from around the state by playing a game of two truths and a lie. All members of each group said their name, school, and three "facts" about themselves.

Two of these "facts" were true; one was a lie. After the three "facts" were given, the other members of the group voted on which one was the lie. The participant then revealed which "fact" was false. This process was repeated with each member of the group, and then groups combined so more participants could share additional "facts" with others.

This year, students also participated in several different versions of Latin-themed games. Latin Guess Who, Knucklebones, and Bananagrams were some of the games offered in the sessions. Next, students learned about the IJCL in workshops led by teachers

The day ended with a look at the events for the upcoming year by the state officers, and Sarah Blade, IJCL Secretary, announced all of the raffle winners selected from those who attended at least one IJCL workshop and professor presentation. With Fall Latin Day coming to a close, students and sponsors alike were excited for the year to come and everything it promises to offer.

and student officers. These revolved around the core points of IJCL State Convention. An admissions session and campus tour provided helpful information about the college.

Dr. Daniel Moore of ISU shows students and teachers how to read and translate Latin

manuscripts in one of the professor presentations.

Ms. Sarah McDaniels of Park Tudor School teaches students how to play the classic Italian card game Scopa in one of the games sessions.

Not e f r o m y o u r s ec o n d V ic e Pr es iden tAre you looking for a way to become more involved in the IJCL? Well, we have a special treat for you: the IJCL statewide service projects! Since September, local chapters have been participating in significant ways, including sending socks to soldiers, holding food drives for local food banks, donating rice to the World Food Programme, and creating Saturnalia cards for hospitals and nursing homes. If any chapters have participated in these events, please submit participation to tinyurl.com/IJCLServiceForm by March 1. The IJCL held no service project for the month of January due to the events scheduled for Indiana Latin Week, but February is the month to serve your local needy furry friends and animal shelters. In March, before making memories at State Convention, help make a difference in dental hygiene around the world by collecting toothbrushes. You will bring these toothbrushes to State Convention and submit them when your chapter performs roll call. Participation in this service event will earn your chapter an extra five point toward the delegate spirit competition.

More information about service projects can be found at tinyurl.com/IJCLService17-18.

Lea d er s h ip Dev e l o p m en t a c a d em yOn Sept. 23, 2017, the fourth annual Leadership Development Academy was held at Carmel High School. The Leadership Development Academy is a gathering of those who are interested in being leaders in the IJCL, whether locally or at the state level. Steve Perkins, IJCL board member, opened the Saturday morning event by giving welcoming remarks to students and sponsors. Students then divided into groups based upon their interests and skills. IJCL President Eric Feeney then led the group in an icebreaker in order to introduce attendees to other students from around the state.

The state officers each held workshops designed to teach these aspiring leaders more about their specific duties as club leaders and officers. IJCL sponsors also led workshops, with topics ranging from incorporating games into club meetings to developing effective communication and recruitment strategies. At the end of the day, members of each school gathered together for individual chapter goal-setting sessions, where an officer or sponsor guided them on how to best use the ideas shared throughout the day to strengthen and improve their own clubs.

Students from Culver Academies learn new ways to incorporate crafts into their meetings by

creating knucklebones for the Roman game.

Officers from Cardinal Ritter, Crown Point, and Valparaiso brainstorm ideas on how to increase

club involvement and create fun club events.

The National Junior Classical League will host its 65th annual NJCL Convention July 23-28 at Miami University in Oxford, OH. The Indiana Junior Classical League will also sponsor the annual bus trip to NJCL Convention July 20-22. Highlights of the bus trip will include Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Newport Aquarium, Kings Island, and a riverboat cruise with lunch included. For more information on registration for the NJCL Convention and IJCL bus trip, please visit the IJCL website.

"Terre Haute South Vigo celebrated Saturnalia on December 15 with a party at which we exchanged gifts, sang Latin carols, and crafted figurines out of clay for the Sigillaria. Everyone had a grand time, including several guests invited by club members to extend the friendly hand of JCL."

-Becki Bush, Terre Haute South Vigo

"Homestead?s JCL chapter hosted a meeting in November, and members competed in a fast-paced scavenger hunt that recreated the Twelve Labors of Hercules! First, members stopped by the snack table, were debriefed on their mission, paired up into friend groups, and then traversed the treacherous hallways of Homestead to battle against frightening monsters, mythological creatures, and mind-bending puzzles. They were encouraged to document their conquests with photographic evidence on their smartphones. Battles included recreating Hippolyte's girdle with toilet paper, singing a sleepy lullaby to our consul dressed up as a three-headed Cerberus, and capturing the Stymphalian birds through a wacky chicken dance. Once members completed all twelve labors, they confirmed their accomplishments with the Olympian gods (Magistra Grundtisch). Members left the meeting feeling happy and heroic, touting their glory with heads held high."

-Pamela Chen, Homestead High School

All chapters have the opportunity to participate in IJCL?s year-round contests. Any chapter that wishes to compete in the Helen Wampler Spirit Contest should fill out the form found in the convention packet or IJCL Handbook and submit it to Kayla Apking, IJCL Second Vice President, at State Convention.

Chapters interested in the Dennis Bartlow Publicity Contest should send newspaper clippings, radio announcements, and television information as well as creative publicity to Brittany Krowiarz, Publicity Coordinator, by Feb. 9.

The Sharon Gibson Community Service Award is awarded to the school with the top community service project. The application form is available online or in the IJCL Handbook and must be submitted to Lisanne Pierson, IJCL Co-Chair, by Feb. 16.
