South Asian Spelling Bee Goes to Chicago, Atlanta

he 2011 MetLife SouthAsian Spelling Bee con-tinued its 10-city tourwith events in the
Chicago and Atlanta areas July 9and 10. Turnout in was encour-aging and the bee attractedsome top talent as well as youngand new spellers, organizerssaid in a press release.
“This event is being recog-nized as the essential platform
to get your first experience andalso meet and interact with vet-eran spellers,” Rahul Walia,founder of the contest, wasquoted as saying.
In Chicago, Mahati Vavilalafrom Novi, Mich., was declaredthe regional champ, whileTaarak Shah from Plainfield, Ill.,and Yasir Hasnain from Forsyth,Ill., were the first and secondrunners-up, respectively.
In Atlanta, an addition to thelist of contest sites, Stuti Mishrafrom West Melbourne, Fla., was
the regional champ and VaidyaGovindarajan from Miami, Fla.,was first runner-up while NilaiSarda from Marietta, Ga., wassecond runner-up.
The winners received cashprizes of $500, $300 and $200,respectively, the release said.The top two winners plus a par-ent each will be given an all-expenses paid trip to New Jerseyfor the Aug. 12 finals.
The contest will be telecastglobally on Sony EntertainmentTelevision-Asia.

wo Indian-American stu-dents are among 125Edison Scholars who willreceive scholarships from
Edison International, the parentcompany of Southern CaliforniaEdison and Edison MissionGroup. Nandeet Mehta andSahithi Rani, both of California,will receive up to $10,000 inscholarships, beginning with a$2,500 college scholarship that isrenewable for three more years,the company website said.
The 125 scholarships reflectthe company’s landmark 125thanniversary this year.
Mehta, 17, who graduatedfrom Hemet High School inHemet, Calif., on June 3, will beattending Villanova University inPennsylvania, majoring in com-prehensive science, his bio dataon the website said.
A recipient of the Rotary YouthLeadership Award and ScholarAthlete Award, Mehta was on hisschool’s tennis and swim teams.He volunteers at a senior carefacility and a local hospital. In
2010,he volunteered at medical clinicsand orphanage schools inMumbai, teaching children toread and write. He was part ofthe California ScholarshipFederation Club, the Key Cluband was section leader for theschool’s symphonic and march-ing bands.
According to the website, Ranigraduated from Upland HighSchool in Upland, Calif., on June9. The 17-year-old will be attend-ing University of California atBerkeley with a major in bio-medical engineering. Rani, whowas born in southern India and
cameto California as a child, is aNational Merit Scholar, a silvermedal winner at the CountyScience Fair, an AP scholar withhonors and is on the principal’shonor roll. Her hobbies includesinging, cooking, tennis, readingmystery novels and celebratingher Indian culture.
“These students are amongthe best and brightest studentsin the country, and we are proudto support them as they embarkon their future,” Theodore F.Craver Jr., chairman and CEO ofEdison International, was quotedin the release on the company’s
website. The scholars wereselected from among more than900 public and private highschool seniors in 14 states. Thisyear, for the first time, the num-ber of awardees was expanded toinclude students in states wherethe company owns and operatesfacilities. Also, requirementswere changed so recipients canattend any accredited UnitedStates university.

10th in a prestigious engi-neering design contest hostedJune 8-11 by OaklandUniversity in Rochester, Mich.
The 19th annual IntelligentGround Vehicle Competitionattracted 54 participants fromall over the world; TeamMoksha was the only teamfrom India, according to apress release from RamaiahInstitute.
The competition was con-ducted by the Association forUnmanned Vehicle SystemsInternational and is one ofthe most prestigious outdoorunmanned ground vehiclecompetitions held across theworld, the release said.
Students were tasked withcreating an autonomousvehicle capable of lane detec-tion and following whileavoiding obstacles in its pathand reaching specified GPScoordinates without any
obstruction.According to the release,
students used sensors such asdigital camera, sonar and GPSreceivers in their design; dataobtained from the sensorswas sent to an on-board lap-top where a C++ program wasused to process it and provideinstructions to guide the vehi-cle.
The vehicle was poweredby a 12 volt battery and hadsolar panels for self-charging.Students came up with sever-al innovations, the releaseadded, including the use of anew algorithm for image pro-cessing and a unique split-frame technology for thechassis.
The overall cost for theproject was $500,000 and wassponsored by MSRIT,Department of TechnicalEducation, Government ofKarnataka, and OstrichMobility Instruments Pvt. Ltd.
According to the release,the project has various appli-cations in military mobility,intelligent transportation sys-tems and industrial manufac-turing.
