Treaties with the CherokeesTreaties with the Cherokees

• Treaty of Holston – July 2, 1791 – Established the relations between the Cherokee nation and the U.S. and established the U.S. as the protectors of the Cherokees. Also the U.S. managing all the foreign affairs of the Cherokee nation. Most likely this treaty was not successful because of the hostilities brought afterward.

• Treaty of Holston 2 - June 26, 1794 – Brought the end of hostilities between the U.S. and the Cherokee nation. Included earlier points from the first Treaty of Holston. Since it ended the arguments it was a good outcome.

• Treaty of Tellico – October 2, 1798, 1804, 1805 – Was an addition to the Treaty of Holston and was executed during the presidency of John Adams. Not a popular treaty if executed.

• Treaty of Washington – January 7, 1806 – Ceded territory. Bad out come for the Cherokees.

• Treaty of New York – August 7, 1790 – The U.S. allowed the Creeks to punish non-Indian trespassers and import goods without paying American duties. The creeks agreed to turn over runaway slaves. This was the first treaty between U.S. and Indians that wasn’t held in Indian controlled lands. Bad outcome if they had to establish the boundaries again in the Treaty of Colerain.

• Treaty of Colerain – June 29, 1796 – Established boundaries within Indian Nations and the U.S. Varies in a good or bad outcome.
