A musicologist and linguist, Pingala was deeply

interested in prosody from which sprung some

intuitive mathematical ideas like Pascal's Triangle.

Pingala was the first to use the zero as a notational

symbol, although its use as a numerical value came

about six or seven centuries later.

ARYABHATA I 476-550 CE18 Aug, 2014

There are several Aryabhatas in Indian mathematical

history, the first of which is an Indian Euclid of sorts.

His book, Aryabhatiya, consolidated many prior

achievements into a small book, which containedinstructions for calculations.

He made some original contributions in trigonometry

and calculated the value of Pi to four decimal places.

One ofIndia's greatest mathematicians,

Brahmagupta's crowning achievement is a general

solution to what is now known as Pell's Equation,

which was a major advance in number theory.

Brahmagupta was the first mathematician to give

rules for computing with zero, some of which were

wrong.

Continued Brahmagupta's work and filled many gaps

in it. He understood division by zero better than

Brahmagupta, and his work gives the first inkling of

the concept of infinity. Understood negative numberswell.

His book, Lilavati, is considered the most important

treatise in medieval Indian mathematics.

Ramanujan isIndia's best mathematician ever. His

main contributions are to the theory of numbers and

mathematical analysis. His discoveries on continued

fractions were astonishing, and his notebooks containover 3,000 mathematical results.

His name is associated with some of them like the

Ramanujan prime and Ramanujan theta function.

HARISH CHANDRA 1923-198318 Aug, 2014

Chandra began his career as a physicist studying

with Homi Bhabha and then under the celebrated

Paul Dirac, whom he is supposed to have seen once

in a term.

He went to Princeton as Dirac's assistant, switched

his field to mathematics, & made fundamental

contributions to the subject of representation theory.

Could have won the Fields Medal except for bad luck.
