PLOT OVERVIEW

IndianHorseisthestoryofSaulIndianHorse,anOjibwayboyfromnorthernOntariowhoescapeshisdemonsandroughchildhoodthroughhockey,onlytosuccumbtoalcoholafterlosinghisjoyforthegame.Asayoungboy,Saullivesabushlife,withlittlecontactwiththeoutsideworld.Hisgrandmother,Naomi,hideshimandhisbrotherBenjaminfromthethreatoftheschool.Hissister,Rachel,wastakenawaybywhitemenbeforeSaulwasborn.In1957,whenSaulwasfour,theZhaunagush(whitemen)abducthisbrotherBenjamin.Hismotherchanges,havinglostapartofherselfalongwithhertwochildren.SheandSaul’sfatherandunclefindalcoholandbegintolosethemselvesinit.Hisfamilyleavesthebushfortransientcampsontheoutskirtsofmilltownsinpursuitofthedrink.Theybecomenomads,movingfromtentvillagetotentvillage,eatingwhatevertheycan,includingroasteddog.TheysettleinReddittin1960andbegintoplantroots,andthehopemakesSaul’sfatherdrinkless.Inthisenvironment,Saul’sbrotherBenjaminwalksoutofthebushandbackintotheirlives,havingescapedfromtheschool.He’sthinandhasacough.Naomisaystheyneedtoleave,asBenjaminissuretobefoundbytheZhaunagush,andtakeSaulbackwithhim.TheydecidetomovetoGodsLake,theirancestralhome.Whileatfirsttheythrive,whenharvestingrice,Benjaminisovercomewithacoughingfitanddies.Naomipushestohonorhimtheoldway,butSaul’sparents,auntanduncle,insistthathebegivenaChristianburial.Theyleavewithsacksofricetosellforacoffin,whileSaulandNaomistayatGodsLaketoawaittheirreturn.Theyneverreturn.NaomiandSaulstayatGodsLakeaslongaspossible,butaswinterstartstocome,theymustescapetofindpropershelter.TheyleavetofindNaomi’sbrother’ssoninMinaki.Duringthetrip,NaomigiveseverythingtokeepSaulalive,evencarryinghim.TheymakeittotherailroaddepotatMinakiandNaomisaysshewantstorestbeforefindinghernephew.Shedies,holdingSaul,whoisfoundbyagroupofwhitemen.SaulistakentoSt.Jerome’sIndianResidentialSchool.Itisextremelyregimented,andpunishmentsareswiftandextreme.SaulisseenasanoutsiderforhisfamiliaritywithEnglish,andbecomesisolated.Childrendiebysuicide,orgomadfromtheirpunishments.FatherLeboutilier,anewpriestattheschool,convincestheschooltoallowthekidstoplayhockey.Onlytheolderboysareallowedtoplay,butSaulfeelsaninstantconnectiontothegame,andisallowedtolookaftertheice.Hebeginsto
