ALWAR, INDIA Under the British Raj, Alwar was the capital of a “princely state,” a semi-autonomous kingdom typically ruled by a maharaja. In contrast to much of the rest of Rajasthan’s desert and arid hills, Alwar is set in a picturesque valley and enclosed by the verdant Aravalli Hills. The city is home to a wealth of historical and natural attractions, and serves as a center of agricultural production.

7

AMANBAGHAn oasis in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan, Amanbagh’s compound once served as a lavish hunting lodge for a tiger-hungry maharajah. Its regal past inspires the palatial rose-hued architecture, with suites carved out of marble and sandstone, lush gardens shading a sea-green pool, and cuisine supported by an impressive kitchen garden. As well as wildlife expeditions into Sariska National Park – now home to a tiger reserve – guests can explore the ancient landscape, rich in historic forts and temples, beautiful villages and majestic ruins.

8

This walk will take you through a lane of abandoned houses.

Spa: enjoy a 75-minute Abhyanga Massage. Abhyanga means ‘to anoint’, and this soothing Ayurvedic head and body treatment, carried out by two therapists, uses warm herbal oils, selected according to body type.

11

RANTHAMBORE, INDIA Set beside the starkly handsome Aravalli Hills, Ranthambore National Park is one of the world’s premier tiger sanctuaries. Measuring 1,334 square kilometres, the park is home to an array of wildlife and takes its name from nearby Ranthambore Fort, one of the oldest forts in the Subcontinent with a history stretching back more than a millennium. More recently, the region was once a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur and was designated a nature preserve in 1955, one of the first in India.

12

AMAN-I-KHÁSThe wilderness near Ranthambore National Park provides the serene setting for Aman-i-Khás, a tented safari outpost inspired by Mughal hunting parties of old. Ten, soaring, butler-serviced guest tents shelter spacious living areas with daybeds, stone soaking tubs and rain showers, all divided, Mughal-style, by white voile screens. As well as dining and spa tents, the camp includes a bawadi step-well pool. Daily Jeep safaris are accompanied by a naturalist, who will assist guests in spotting the elusive tigers that roam deep within the forests of the national park. Further afield, ancient forts and villages can be explored on foot or by camel, while the artisan centre of Dastkar makes an excellent shopping destination.

GALLE, SRI LANKA

A charismatic UNESCO World Heritage site that combines native Sri Lankan traditions with Portuguese, Dutch and British heritage, the cosmopolitan port city has been a centre of trade for more than a millennium. Nowadays eclectic architectural styles sit side-by-side, and the energetic city radiates out from 17th-century Galle Fort on the coast.

16

AMANGALLASet within the ramparts of the 400-year-old fort on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Amangalla occupies a handsome colonial building that during the 19th century was the New Oriental Hotel. Vestiges of the building’s past appear in the vintage NOH crockery and the old photographs adorning the library walls; and colonial elegance informs the four-poster-furnished guest rooms and suites. Explore Galle’s charming historic centre, or head a little further out for lush countryside, temples and tea plantations. Amangalla’s hydrotherapy spa, The Baths, is the perfect place for a post-tour pick-me-up.

Within the ramparts, narrow streets are lined with Colonial Dutch and British houses, which remain in use today as government offices.

After a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner, who will diagnose your dosha and arrange a personalized menu of meals and treatments, enjoy a 30-minute Ayurvedic oil massage, and a 60- minute Abhyanga couple’s treatment.

Temple tour: visit three of our favourite nearby temples: ancient Yatagala, at the top of 120-odd steps, from where guests can receive a Buddhist blessing; modern Rhummasala, on the headland across the bay with breathtaking views of Galle; and Nawamunisaya, the simplest of the three, located in a small village by the sea.

19

TANGALLE, SRI LANKATangalle is one of the largest towns in southwestern Sri Lanka, a haven of sandy beaches, mild temperatures and lush forests. The name of the town in Sinhala means ‘projected rock’, referencing the rocks which form the coastline in the town area, and it remains a vital fishing port for the region.

20

AMANWELLAA Modernist marvel overlooking the Indian Ocean, Amanwella lies near the fishing village of Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s ‘secret’ southern coast. A secluded swathe of golden sand beach and swaying palms provide the serene backdrop to the sleek guest suites, designed after Sri Lanka’s most famous architect, Geoffrey Bawa, whose Tropical Modernism is the blueprint for many a contemporary bolthole across the Southern Hemisphere. With ancient temples and a national park nearby, this beachside idyll is the perfect place to unwind and regain focus during your Aman journey.

Sunset at Mulgirigala Rock Temple: 30 minutes north of Tangalle, this 3rd-century temple perches on a boulder that rises 210 metres out of the surrounding forest. In 1826 a British administrator uncovered sacred leaf scripts from the temple, which unlocked a scholarly study of the island’s ancient history. The climb to the top can be quite tiring (over 500 steps) and modest attire is recommended.

PHUKETDerived from the Malay word bukit, or hill, Phuket was long known to European traders as Jung Ceylon, and was a rich source of valuable tin. After an attack by the rival Burmese navy in 1785, which was repulsed by forces commanded by a local widow and her sister, Phuket rose to prominence as a regional administrative center, charged with running the southern provinces of Thailand.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and sports fine beaches, constant sunshine, and an enviable proximity to a multitude of attractions and dive sites – among them the Similan Islands, Koh Phi Phi, and the limestone peaks of Phang Nga Bay.

24

AMANPURIScattered with coconut palms overlooking the Andaman Sea, the Amanpuri peninsula on Phuket’s west coast provides a peaceful enclave from which to relax and rejuvenate in complete privacy. The Attathuyan-style upturned roofs of the guest pavilions shelter sleek, spacious interiors, their contemporary appeal matched by the array of globally influenced venues for dining and entertainment – with cuisines and cocktails originating from South America, Japan and Italy, as well as Southeast Asia. Witness spectacular sunrises practising yoga outdoors, or lose days on the private beach, from where a fleet of boats lies ready to whisk guests away to dive sites and neighboring islands.
