The 21st century skills are a set of abil-ities that students need to develop inorder to succeed in the informationage. Communicative skills are oneamong them. TeachingCommunicative Skills by Mr.Rajeevan, a resource person fromOxford University Press aimed at mak-ing use of interactive techniques todevelop speaking accurately, appro-priately and fluently for a range of pur-poses (e.g., to inform, instruct, moti-

vate, and persuade) and in diverse environment. The workshop also focused on importance of link-ing grammar with communicative functions in a graded manner. Teaching pronunciation of words,word stress, sentence stress, intonation for different purposes were also highlighted in the session.The workshop provides a learning outcome, in order to train students to use English for academic,social, and career purposes in the global sphere. It is also helpful for the teachers to prepare learn-ers for the Assessment of Speaking and Listening (ASL) Skills.

"Promote 21st century skills through activity based teaching and

learning process" - Mr. Rajeevan KaralMrs. Ashalata Badami from OxfordUniversity Press in her workshop onMathematics, with more than 20 yearsexperience in the field of elementaryMathematics Education, aimed at helpingteachers understand and facilitate stu-dents to appreciate the usefulness andapplicability of Mathematics in real- lifesituations. Mrs. Badami began the work-shop by asking the teachers to recall thestages or the sequence involved in teach-ing any concept. She emphasized themethod, ELPS (E- experience with con-crete objects, L- language, P- picture, S-symbol) for concept-building. Studentscommonly look for 'clue-words' whilesolving a word problem, which actuallydefeats the purpose. Ms. Badami also sug-

gested games likeMastermind. She explainedhow the concepts of addi-tion and subtraction of inte-gers using various activi-ties. She emphasized theuse of rajma- seeds, ice-cream- sticks and zip- lockbags as a classroomresource for teaching theseconcepts at the primarylevel. Representation oftens and hundredths, the

comparison and addition of decimal num-bers was also demonstrated using easilyavailable teaching aids like square- linedpaper and number grids of 10 X 10. Shehighlighted the techniques of teachingfractions by paper cutting and pastingmethod and also explained an activityusing circles made of cloth. Activities likeMaths walk through Humayun tomb werequite interesting to explain the concepts ofSymmetry, Mensuration, finding LCM andHCF of numbers by paper cutting method.The workshop was an enriching experi-ence as it provided teachers with simpletechniques which would facilitate thedevelopment of core mathematical con-cepts and problem- solving skills in stu-dents.

The Director General advocated the students to be the best in whatever field they choose.

The aim of this club is to show howengaging students in real-life mathemati-cal situations can stimulate their mathe-matical creative thinking. Kidumaticawhich means "advancing math" inHebrew, is based on academic research inthe fields of excellence, cognition andmathematics education, and on the socialprinciple of equal opportunity for all andone's right to self-realization and aspira-tion, regardless of eth-nic background andsocio-economic status.Mathematics is, intoday's society, anindicator of ability andsuccess and learningmathematics developsan ability for logical and critical thinkingthat is applicable to other fields, as well asbeing relatively non-based in culture andtherefore equally suitable for studentsfrom different cultural backgrounds.Theoretical Background onMathematically Gifted and TalentedScientific literature differentiates betweenthree types of excelling students: "goodlearners", "talented students", and"extremely talented students." which

means enhancement of Mathematics. Shestated that Israel attained Independence inthe year 1948. She acquainted them withthe Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth

cess. Mrs. Divya Arora, Managing Directorof Nataraj Publishers, advised the studentsto have fun, learn, make good friends, begood people, be nice at heart as this is thebest time of their life. She explained indetail about the book - 'India, an alphabetride' by Mrs Shallu Jindal, which wasdesigned alphabetically, with facts aboutIndia which was picturesque and informa-tive.

International Educational Exchange is the most significantcurrent project designed to continue the process of humaniz-ing mankind to the point, we would hope, that men can learnto live in peace--eventually even to cooperate in constructiveactivities rather than compete in a mindless contest of mutu-al destruction. We must try to expand the boundaries ofhuman wisdom, empathy and perception, and there is noway of doing that except through education. Real culturaldiversity results from the interchange of ideas, products, andinfluences, not from the insular development of a singlenational style. Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, marching ahead inthis direction, provided a platform for its students to interactwith the Faculty and Students of Mercersburg Academy, USA.Mr Frank Rutherford, Director of the Institute, an ardent lover

of Indian Heritage and Culture visited India along with hisFaculty Members and students on a week day tour. A tradi-tional welcome with holi colours spread its fragrance in theair. Mrs Jen, a Faculty Member, who was also a student of thesame institution appreciated the warm welcome and sharedabout the multiple role they perform in their institution. Sheis even a Coach for Diving and Trekking in her institute. TheStudent Delegates were quite excited to know the Indian waysand habits. Prakashites performed Burrakatha on 'Dasavataram' and a Folk Dance - "Thappeta Gullu". The art ofClay Pottery and Basket weaving mesmerized the delegates.Prakashites showered them with many questions to knowabout their Culture, Heritage and Education.

A seminar on "WomenEmpowerment" was conducted by the Co-founders of AMighty Girl - Mrs. Carolyn Danckaert, and Mr. Aaron Smith.They interacted with the teachers and briefed about theirwebsite which has got high quality children products tohelp the new generation of girls to grow and pursue what-ever dreams they choose to truly to be mighty girls. World Sparrow Day"Happy is the person who not only sings, but feels God's eye is on thesparrow and knows He watches over me." World Sparrow Day wasobserved on 20th March wherein children performed a stage show on'Save Sparrows!', showed a ppt and explained how to save sparrows bykeeping water in an earthen pot. The tiny tots conveyed the message tothe audience that too much usage of cell phones also causes greatharm to the sparrows. World Sparrow Day provided a meeting groundfor people to play an important role in advocacy and in spreading the

awareness on the need of conserving common biodiversity.

Class Sabha is a creative programme bun-dled with different activities whichupholds and encourages a child to enhancehis/her creativity and to develop his/herknowledge which is helpful for his/herfuture growth. From different activitieslike Show and Tell , Making a Mask, MockParliament etc., every child participatedwith sincere effort and showcased his/her ability to win in a bold way. Ear bud printing helps thechildern to improve their colouring skills according to the picture given on the activity sheet dur-

ing their activity they loved andenjoyed a lot doing the ear budprinting. Through Sink andFloat activity children coulddevelop their thinking skillswhere they can recognize thethings or the objects which cansink and float and could under-stand the means very clearly. Onthe other way they could learnlight things can float on waterand heavy things will sink inwater. Childern learned that

word "yellow" starts with letter "Y" and how yellow is related in our day life like sun is yellow ,lemon, banana and Mango are yellow in colour. Children enjoy and learn to make lemonade withtheir cute little hands as a part of activity on weight and capacity slurps, sour, sweet juice with lotsof vitamin "C". They shared with each other and enjoyed the yummy drink. The activity of using theflash cards of money was to know the transactions of money.

Science Fair is a festival of learningnew things in a scientificapproach. It is a new tech-nique to understand scien-tific observation in closeway". Students partici-pated in the fair andbecame an inspirationfor future technicalgrowth in science to fur-ther generations. They theo-retically and practicallyexplained the present scenario oftechnology with working models.

National Science Day was celebrat-ed on this day to commemorate

the contribution of Dr. C. V.Raman, who was awarded

the Nobel Prize in thefield of Science.Students gave paperpresentation on the lifehistory of Dr.C.V.Raman,

demonstrated the toysfrom trash made by them,

based on Sri Arvind Gupta’stoy making guidelines.

With a view to train students in eco-friendlymethods for a safe future, a seven-memberHSBC Mentor Team along with Team LeaderMiss Glaro conducted Train GreenProgramme in the school consecutively forthe second year. Two members of Faculty inBiology and a ten-member student teamattended the session. The focus of the ses-sion is to practice 3-R's "Reduce-Recycle-Reuse". Bio diversity, endangered speciesand the causes for each were highlighted inthe session. The Team Leader called the Ten-member Student Team "Change Agents" who canbring about a small change in themselves by implementing these methods in their daily life.Miss Glaro also spoke about energy efficient methods to save energy, water management, car-pool and transport to save fuel. The mentors conducted various activities like Skits, Poster-making on recycled charts based on environment. The session has invited the students to con-nect themselves to trees, migratory bird, water, air, dolphin etc. to enact their roles.

A.P.State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department under the guidelines of Ministry ofHome Affairs, Government of India conducted an Awareness Programme - "Fire & EvacuationDrill in Schools". Mr J. Mohan Rao, District Fire Officer, Mr. CH. Krupavaram, AssistantDistrict Fire Officer and Mr. M. Vara Prasad, Station Fire Officer of Visakhapatnam zoneorganized the campaign in the school and demonstrated the Mock Fire Drill. The Studentsformed into nine teams - Fire Safety Team, Fire Alarm Team, Evacuation Team, Search &Rescue Team, First-Aid Team, Fire Fighting Team and Media Management Team to evacuateand rescue the victims of fire accident. A live mock drill where Branto Skylift was also usedto make the students aware of various stages involved in rescue operation. Prakashites par-ticipated in the fire awareness event with enthusiasm.

Renowned Psychologist Dr. B.V. Pattabhiram,the hypnotist, author, career guide and coun-selor, counseled the parents on wise parent-ing. He was an eye opener for the entire gath-ering. He gave many practical and simple tipsthat a parent must follow in order to developan effective bonding with their children.Parents were highly delighted to interact andtake his valuable suggestions to help theirwards for better future. His tremendous sense

of humor was truly entertaining. Even the Prakashites got an opportunity to interact with Dr. B. V.Pattabhiram, who told them that "Examinations are nothing but festivals. Concentrate on one sub-ject and spend more time with family members. God has given us a paper and pencil to design ourdestiny." He gave some tips to the students for dealing the examination in a stress free way. Heinspired and enriched the students by quoting "Dare to dream and care to achieve, be a performer,not a watcher." He also explained a new abbreviation of alphabet, PLANE, 6 - R techniques, MANTRAand the success pyramid. He suggested rubber-band technique to avoid untimely sleep. He advisedthe students to avoid negative people because they are the stress careers.

Summer Camp this year offered children a widevariety of specialized activities which includedperforming arts, music, improvement in commu-nication skills and so on - a unique package of funfilled, recreational events proved to be a skillfulretreat from the scorching heat this summer. Theprimary purpose of this camp is educational andcultural development. The camp provided an hourof physical fitness through a variety of games likecrazy cones, parachuting, cricket and soccer. In'Easy Art' hour the tiny tots of 3 to 6 years learnt artwith numbers, alphabets, thumb and handprints.The children of 7 years to 11 years painted theirown canvas bags, prepared cold - ceramic toysand learnt the art of paper quilling. The storytelling hour aimed at developing the skill of narra-

tion, enaction, voice - modulation and gestures inthe students. The musical hour of action songsand concept songs washighly enjoyed and helpedthe children lots of fun. Toyswith trash (based on Mr.Aravind Gupta's ideas) trig-gered the scientific skill ofchildren as they createdtheir own toys utilizing thewaste materials. The addedbonanza of cookery andspeaking manners was thoroughly enjoyed byevery child.The summer camp included recitingMantrapushpam, quilling, making soft toys, activ-ities to improve English Communicative Skills and

squash making in safe and nurturing environ-ment. The camp provided the children an oppor-

tunity to develop teamworkand co-operation. Childrenhave discovered new passionsin them and learned to beindependent during the ses-sion. All the articles whichwere prepared by childrenwere displayed on the last dayand appreciation cards weregiven to the best performers.

Mathematics Summer Camp was also conductedthat helps the gifted students and others toexplore the world of Mathematics through the fif-teen days concept based programme - Easy Steps

to Olympiads and Fun with Mathematics. TheProgramme was planned with many varieties ofMathematical Activities that targeted at Juniorand Senior Levels of the students in high schooland in creating the best experience for any Mathenthusiastic student. Prizes were distributed tothe most outstanding students and all the studentswere presented with certificates. The excitingsummer camp was brought to close with a funfilled gala time in which children performed onthe songs they learnt during the camp. They dis-played their art work through a ramp walk /fash-ion show. A variety of games added to the excite-ment and enthusiasm of the children.

Born in Singapore on September 16, 1923, Lee Kuan Yew became the longest-serving Prime Minister inworld history. Lee rose through the ranks of his country's political system before becoming the firstPrime Minister of Singapore on June 5, 1959. He is revered the World over for his strong resolutions totransform Singapore into a model country.

Early Years : Lee Kuan Yew was born into awealthy Chinese family that had resided inSingapore since the 19th century. After WorldWar II, Lee studied law at Fitzwilliam College,in Cambridge, UK. In 1950, he was admitted tothe English bar, but instead of practicing lawthere, Lee returned to Singapore to do so.

Political Beginnings in People'sAction Party (PAP) : Singapore was aBritish colony and held Britain's main navalbase in the Far East. The country was ruled bya governor and a legislative council, mostlycomprising wealthy Chinese businessmen inthe early 1950s, Singapore buzzed with talk ofconstitutional reform and independence, and

Lee banded with other like minds to challengethe governing structure of the country. In 1954Lee became secretary-general of his ownparty, the People's Action Party. In 1955, a newSingapore constitution was introduced. Itincreased the number of elected seats on thecouncil to 25 out of a total of 32, thereby allow-ing only 7 seats to be filled by appointment.but in 1957, Lee returned to London yet againas talks resumed. The next year, Lee helpednegotiate what Singapore's status would be asa self-governing state, and a new constitutionwas formed. Under the new constitution,national elections were held in June 1959.Lee's party won a decisive victory, taking 43 ofthe 51 seats in the assembly, and Singaporegained self-governing status (except in mattersof defense and foreign affairs). Lee was swornin as prime minister on June 5, 1959, becom-ing the first prime minister of an independentSingapore.

Lee’s Urban Renewal Policies : LeeKuan Yew introduced a five-year plan callingfor urban renewal and construction of newpublic housing, greater rights for women,educational reforms and industrialization.His plan also called for a merger of Singaporewith Malaysia, and after Malayan prime min-ister Tunku Abdul Rahman proposed the for-mation of a federation that would includeMalaya, Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak, Leebegan to campaign in favor of the effort and toend British colonial rule for good.

Mr. Lee Kuan Yew’s vision for education.The population would be the nation'smost important assets in an islandwith no hinterland or naturalresources. Working towards thatvision, Mr Lee in the 1950s and 1960sfocused on building an efficient, uni-versal education system that wouldprovide a skilled workforce forSingapore's industrialisation pro-gramme as well to as to lower unem-ployment. Mr Lee also saw the need tobuild a professional teaching force andinternationally competitive local uni-versities that would put Singapore onthe world map.

Today, Singapore and the NationalInstitute of Education - which is part ofNTU - are known internationally forhigh teaching standards, particularlyin the teaching of Mathematics,Science and reading, and ranked topsin the World. Many Western countriesthat adapted Singapore textbooks havereported improvements in their stu-dents' performance.

This small country also uniquely hastwo universities that are ranked withinthe world's top 50 - NTU and theNational University of Singapore. Ifyou consider the fact that Singapore isjust 50 years old and yet has twoworld-class universities, you begin toappreciate the magnitude of thisachievement.

A key pillar that Mr Lee stronglypushed for was the bilingual policy,with English as the working languageand the language of education andlearning, and the mother tongue tokeep Singaporeans culturally rooted.Trade and industry were the youngnation's only hope for economic sur-vival. To attract foreign investors, heforesaw that Singaporeans had tospeak English, the language of theglobal economy, international diplo-macy, science and technology.
