Pakistans KSE-100 stock index surged 55% in 2009, a year that also saw the South Asian nationwracked by increased violence and its state institutions described by various media talking headsas being on the verge of collapse. Even more surprising is the whopping 825% increase in KSE-100 from 1999 to 2009, which makes it a significantly better performer than the BRIC nations.

A familiar yardstick often used to measure progress of a nation is its energy consumption. Percapita energy consumption in Pakistan is estimated at 14.2 million Btu, which is much higherthan Bangladeshs 5 million BTUs per capita but slightly less than Indias 15.9 million BTU percapita energy consumption. However, South Asias per capita energy consumption is only afraction of other industrializing economies in Asia region such as China (56.2 million BTU),Thailand (58 million BTU) and Malaysia (104 million BTU), according to the US Dept of

Energy 2006 report. To put it in perspective, the world average per capita energy use is about 65million BTUs and the average American consumes 352 million BTUs. With 40% of thePakistani households that have yet to receive electricity, and only 18% of the households thathave access to pipeline gas, the energy sector is expected to play a critical role in economic andsocial development. With this growth comes higher energy consumption and stronger pressureson the countrys energy resources. At present, natural gas and oil supply the bulk (80 percent) ofPakistans energy needs. However, the consumption of those energy sources vastly exceeds thesupply. For instance, Pakistan currently produces only 18.3 percent of the oil it consumes,fostering a dependency on imports that places considerable strain on the countrys financial

position. On the other hand, hydro and coal are perhaps underutilized today, as Pakistan hasample potential supplies of both.

Here are some more recent comparative indicators:

One out of every three illiterate adults in the world is an Indian, according to UNESCO. Pakistanstands fourth in the world in terms of illiterate adult population, after India, China andBangladesh.

One out of very two hungry persons in the world is an Indian, according to World Food Program.Pakistan fares significantly better than India on the hunger front.

The reason for higher levels of poverty in India in spite of its rapid economic growth is thegrowing rich-poor disparity. Gini index measuring rich-poor gap for India is at 36, higher thanPakistans 30. Gini index is defined as a ratio with values between 0 and 100: A low Gini indexindicates more equal income or wealth distribution, while a high Gini index indicates moreunequal distribution. Zero corresponds to perfect equality (everyone having exactly the sameincome) and 100 corresponds to perfect inequality (where one person has all the income, whileeveryone else has zero income).

Let us conclude with an excerpt from a British writer William Dalrymples article,published on14 August, 2007 in The Guardian:

On the ground, of course, the reality is different and first-time visitors to Pakistan are almostalways surprised by the countrys visible prosperity. There is far less poverty on show inPakistan than in India, fewer beggars, and much less desperation. In many ways the

infrastructure of Pakistan is much more advanced: there are better roads and airports, and morereliable electricity. Middle-class Pakistani houses are often bigger and better appointed than theirequivalents in India.

Moreover, the Pakistani economy is undergoing a construction and consumer boom similar toIndias, with growth rates of 7%, and what is currently the fastest-rising stock market in Asia.You can see the effects everywhere: in new shopping centers and restaurant complexes, in thehoardings for the latest laptops and iPods, in the cranes and building sites, in the endless storesselling mobile phones: in 2003 the country had fewer than three million cellphone users; todaythere are almost 50 million.

RIP, MiG-21

April 27, 2010: India has finally made it official, its troublesomefleet of MiG-21 fighters are being phased out. The 121 that wererecently upgraded, will all be retired in seven years. The other 85will be out of service in two years. India operates the largest fleetof MiG-21s, although China has even more of their MiG-21

clones, the J-7 in service. China still exports J-7s, but is rapidlyretiring the ones remaining in Chinese service. Over 10,000 Mig-21s and J-7s have been produced in the last sixty years, makingthis the most widely manufactured jet fighter of the last century(during World War II, there were several propeller driven fightersthat were produced in greater numbers.) The MiG-21 lookedfearsome, but it was a bust in combat, getting shot down moreoften than not.

During 1966-84, India built 658 MiG-21s. Over half those aircraftwere lost to accidents. This got worse as the aircraft got older.India lost 250 MiG-21s to accidents between 1991 and 2003.

When consulted, Russia pointed out that India had insisted onmanufacturing many of the spare parts needed to keep MiG-21soperational, and many of these parts were not manufactured toRussian specifications. While Russia does not have a reputation formaking the highest quality equipment, their standards are oftenhigher than Indias. Its no secret that much of the militaryequipment made in India is pretty shabby by world standards.

Most of the 110 pilots lost in these MiG-21 accidents were newpilots, which pointed out another problem. India has long put offbuying jet trainers. New pilots go straight from propeller driventrainer aircraft, to high performance jets like the MiG-21. This ismade worse by the fact that the MiG-21 has always been a trickyaircraft to fly. That, in addition to it being an aircraft dependent onone, low quality, engine, makes it more understandable why somany MiGs were lost. And a lot were lost.

The MiG-21 problems were overcome by 2006, a year in which noMiG-21s were lost. India improved maintenance, spare partsquality and pilot training to the point that the aircraft was no longerconsidered the most dangerous fighter to fly. But they were moreexpensive to keep in safe flying condition. So now all are headedfor retirement.

That introduces another problem, the MiG-21 replacement.Currently, India is determined that this will be the locally

developed jet fighter, the LCA (Light Combat Aircraft, now calledTejas). There have been a lot of development problems, and massproduction (at least 20 aircraft a year) wont begin until 2012. Orat least thats the plan. For over two decades, India has been tryingto design, develop and manufacture its own lightweight fighter(the LCA/Tejas). The project has been a major disaster.

The U.S. F-16 is probably the premier lightweight fighter inservice, and entered wide service about the time India beganthinking about creating their own. Both the F-16 (at least theearlier models), and the LCA, weigh about twelve tons. But the F-16 is a high performance aircraft, with a proven combat record,

while the LCA is sort of an improved Mirage/MiG-21 type aircraft.Not too shabby, and it is cheap (about half the cost of an F-16).Also, for all this time, money and grief, India has made its aviationindustry a bit more capable and mature.

When work began in the mid-1980s, it was believed that theaircraft would be ready for flight testing by 1990. A long list oftechnical delays resulted in that first flight taking place in 2001.Corners had to be cut to make this happen, for the LCA wasoriginally designed to use the Indian built Kaveri engine. For a jetfighter, the engine is the most complex part of the aircraft, and theKaveri has had its share of setbacks. Fortunately, there was anAmerican engine, the GE 404, that fit the LCA, and could be usedas a stop-gap. The Kaveri engine has been ordered for the firstproduction aircraft. The American engine has been used in themeantime, for the prototypes.

For all this, India only plans to buy 200-300 LCAs, mainly toreplace its aging MiG-21s. Export prospects are dim, given all thecompetition out there (especially for cheap, second-hand F-16s).The delays have led the air force to look around for a hundred or so

new aircraft (or even used F-16s) to fill the gap between elderlyMiG-21s falling apart, and the arrival of the new LCAs. However,two decades down the road, the replacement for the LCA willprobably be a more competitive, and timely, aircraft. The mainpurpose of the LCA program was not to produce a suitablereplacement for the MiG-21, but to help build an Indian warplaneindustry. In this, it succeeded.

The LCA was not the first attempt to produce an Indian jet fighter.The HF-24 was an earlier attempt at developing a modern fighter.Designed by Kurt Tank (who also designed the German FW-190and Ta-152 during World War II), the HF-24 was a failure becauseIndia could not develop a powerful enough engine. Thus the 147HF-24s built, served from the 1960s, to the 1980s, as a groundattack aircraft.

This is a case of two beggars fighting over who is better than the other. I am from Indiaand yes, it is undeniable that we have abject poverty, misgovernance, etc. However, from

what is reported in the Pakistani media, things arent any better on the other side. Bothcountries need to just get along I am not saying they have to be the best of friends justget along and focus on alleviating the condition of the masses. Our politiicians have verycomfortably stepped into the role of the British. They are truly ruling us, not providinggovernance. If I had to guess, the ruling elite on both sides of the border has enoughmoney stashed away in Swiss accounts to help life millions out of poverty. The present choatic situation of paksitan proves the failure of the government. Althoughpakistan is gifted with all types natural services, still the masses are living in misery.Pakistan is very young country as its been around for 63 years as an independent nation.If we look at the economy of this country, 45% are farmers and 55% are engaged in allkinds of services and industries. Pakistan is one of the world largest producers of cotton.There is a strong textile industry throughout the country. It is an overwhelmingly Islamiccountry yet a democratic state. On the one hand around 40% children do not go toschools but at the same time there are segments of population highly educated. Pakistanhas produced Silicon Valley IT experts, doctors, engineers and bankers who are working

all around the world including Europe and America. There are more than 20 thousandsdoctors working in United States of America. Having said that, pakistan has the potentialto be developed nation but the problem lies on the leadership side. For the prosperity, it isnecessary to respect the merit and eradicate corruption. But again the question rises thathow would this happen and who is going to take initiative. The answer to this question isunknown.

Most of the time it remains as a burning question in the western media ; are Pakistansnuclear assets safe. West keeps insisting that Pakistans nukes are vulnerable and theymight fall into the hands of militants. But when it comes to the state of affairs of Indiannukes west, west keep its eyes wide shut. Most of Indias top nuclear and missilefacilities are located in the extremely Nexal terrorists struck districts of India, locateddeep down in the Red Corridor. What if red corridor? It is the area which India hasdeclared as unstable , ungoverned and highly fragile in security terms. There are some 51districts that are very badly hit by the rebels while the total number of rebel struckdistricts remains around 164, ranging from Dehradhun to Kerala. This shows how muchthe Indian nukes are vulnerable against the rebels. This state of affairs in the directionIndias naked nukes clearly proves that Indian Nuclear arsenal and the entire nuclearinfrastructure is much, much more fragile and vulnerable to fall in the hands of militants

and extremists than that of Pakistans. But western media seems to be dumb on thissituation. Had it be in Pakistan, west would highlight this as an international securitythreat. This sort of attitude puts question mark to the partiality of the western media.

The four richest Indians can buy up all goods and services producedover a year by 169 million Pakistanis and still be left with $60 billion to spare. Why the ElectionCommission of India and not the Election Commission of Pakistan? After all, Islamabadis closer to Kabul than is Delhi.

For the record: Azim Premji, the richest Muslim entrepreneur on the face of the planet,was born in Bombay and now lives in Bangalore. India now has more than three dozen

billionaires; Pakistan has none (not a single dollar billionaire) .The other amazing aspect is the rapid pace at which India is creating wealth. In 2002,Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh and Anil Ambanis father, left his two sons a fortune worth$2.8 billion. In 2007, their combined wealth stood at $94 billion. On 29 October 2007, asa result of the stock market rally and the appreciation of the Indian rupee, Mukeshbecame the richest person in the world, with net worth climbing to US$63.2 billion (BillGates, the richest American, stands at around $56 billion).

Indians and Pakistanis have the same Y-chromosome haplogroup. We have the samegenetic sequence and the same genetic marker (namely: M124). We have the same DNAmolecule, the same DNA sequence. Our culture, our traditions and our cuisine are all thesame. We watch the same movies and sing the same songs. What is it that Indians have

and we dont? Indians elect their leaders!And also to mention: They think of constructionof own nation, unlike other nations who are just concerned with destruction of others.

Simple answer why Indians fare better than Pakistanis: They dont focus on religion andneither do they spend time and money in devising ways to kill their own and everyoneelse over religion.
