PARAMETERS OF HOFSTEDE’S FRAMEWORK

• PDI- is the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions accept and expect that power is distributed unequally.

• Individualism (IDV)- refers to the extent to which people are expected to stand up for themselves & to chose their own affiliations.

• Masculinity v/s feminity- refers to the value placed on traditionally male or female values.

• Uncertainity avoidance- reflects the extent to which the society prefers/avoids rules & structured circumstances over uncertainty.

• Long v/s short term orientation- refers to the importance sttached to the future v/s the past and present.

PDI- Greater acceptance of hierarchical structure. - Inequality of distribution of power & wealth.

IDV- India’s is a more integrated structure in family or work institutions.

MAS- Indian corporate culture promotes competitiveness, assertiveness, ambition & material possessions.

FRANCE

PDI- of France has consistently been higher than other EU countries. - However inequality of power is higher in India than France.

IDV- Each one is expected & prefers to look out for himself

MAS- France promotes values of relationships & quality of life more over the masculine qualities.

UAI- have more creative outlook. - try to find optimal solutions for

a given situation (successful BPOs is a result of that)

LTO- India’s rank at 61 in comparison with the world average at 48 is indicative of a culture that is perseverant and parsimonious.

- High Savings rate of India is a cursor to the same.

FRANCE

UAI- they are good at structuring their operations.

- Meticulous planners - reduce the risks to minimum &

proceed with changes step by step.

LTO- Hofstede has not created a graph for France, but the French are big on tradition which means short-term orientation is favorable for their culture.
