Bhagat Singh Nagar (BSN) Community, Goregaon (West), Mumbai
Background: Slum with appxly. 15K people (6K women, 3K kids)
The area of BSN stretches to 1.5 km in length and 1 km in width
Desh Seva Samiti (DSS) has adopted the community and runs many programs under the following heads

Infrastructure: DSS runs its programs in a rented community Center within BSN so that women and kids can avail of the opportunities
It is our dream to educate, empower and provide a greener and healthy life for the BSN community
Environment
‘Go Green’ Program: Planters at Bhagat Singh Nagar Community
Background: Community with appxly. 15K people (6K women, 3K kids)
Goal: To have planters all through the community which stretches to 1.5 km in length and 1 km in width
Phase 1: To clean up the gutters and have planters in the stretch leading to the *Community Center
Requirement: 50 Planters of Palm Trees
Time Line: By October 16, 2009
6 month Goal: To replicate the phase 1 effort in other gullies of Bhagat Singh Nagar
* DSS has rented an apartment with 5 rooms within BSN to carry on various activities
Budget: Rs. 900/planter
Education
Rich Education Action Program (REAP) at Bhagat Singh Nagar Community
Background: 5 school drop-outs enrolled for National Institute for Open School (X Grade, Delhi Board)
Goal: To tutor the kids and make them exam-ready
Requirement: One dedicated tutor for 4-5 days a week
Time Line: To start by Oct 2009
Long Term Goal: To secure jobs which requires basic X Grade Pass Certificate
Annual Budget: Rs. 81800
Tutor for NIOS Program: Rs. 6400/mo
Miscellaneous (Books, Notebooks etc.): 5000/anum
Education ‘School of Life’ Program for 5th – 8th Grade kids at Bhagat Singh Nagar Community
Background: School of Life (SoL) Program of Anupam Kher Foundation nurtures experiential learning to a target group (5th – 8th graders)
Goal: Spoken English, Maths and Life Skills are taught
Time Line: One Center is running since July 2009
Long Term Goal: To make learning a joyful experience and nurture the overall development of kids into responsible citizens
Scope to expand by starting more batches to reach out to more kids
Education Balwadi Program at Bhagat Singh Nagar Community
Background: There are at least 30-40 kids in the age group of 2-4 years in the lane leading to the BSN community center
Goal: To start the initiation program
Requirement: Balwadi trained teacher
Time Line: To start in Oct 2009
Long Term Goal: To make the younger kids ready for school
Annual Budget: Rs. 60000
Balwadi Teacher: Rs. 3000/mo
Snacks etc: Rs.2000/mo
Scope to expand by starting more Centers to reach out to more kids

Personality Development and Spoken English and Computer Tutoring
Background: BNS community
Goal: To make youth job savvy by tutoring spoken English and Computers and building self-esteem
Requirement: One dedicated tutor for 4 days a week
Time Line: Program runs as 2 hr sessions for 4 days a week since Sep 2009
Long Term Goal:
- to make BSN youth proficient in spoken English
- to make BSN youth computer literate which will open up better job opportunities
Scope to expand by starting more batches to reach out to more kids.Required minimum 2 more Computers
Women Empowerment
SAATHI Project
Background: Under Project Saathi, women of BSN community are provided with opportunities to earn their livelihood
Small to large temporary projects are handled by women. This includes:
Plastic recycling, diyas for diwali, dandiyas for Navratri etc.
Goal: Seeking projects which will benefit and render long-term livelihood for women of BSN
Tie up with fashion garment export industry for sewing/tailoring requirements
Tie up with Corporate Canteens to provide cutvegetables and other day-to-day kitchen needs
Four sewing machines are in place with DSS
At a smaller scale, BSN women sell packed cut ready-to-use vegetables at Goregaon Railway Station

SAATHI Project
Background: Police force in Maharashtra has been asked to eat healthy and keep fit
DSS has got the approval to start a canteen in Goregaon (W) Police Station
The canteen will cater to 600+ police force across Malad, Bangur Nagar and Goregaon
Intended to be at subsidized rates
Requirement: Setting-up of the canteen
Time Line: Nov 2009
Goal: Women from BSN community will run this canteen. Will provide long-term livelihood for at least 10 women
One-Time Set-up Cost: Rs. 1,50,000
Includes all amenities for setting up a canteen to cater 600+ heads

Volunteer-driven activities
Educational Support for kids (5th – 8th Grades) is provided by ‘School of Life’ Program of Anupam Kher Foundation. SoL has 4 sessions of 2h each wherein Maths, Science, English and life skills are imparted using experiential teaching methods
Once a week Health Clinic is run on Saturdays by Dr. Suvarna Pogu from 3.00-6.00pm
Personality Development and Spoken English classes for youth are held 3 days/week by Ms. Manjulata and Ms. Sarita
There is scope for volunteers to pitch in for teaching or acquainting kids, youth or women with a vocation or any specific activity. It could be music, drama or reading news papers. DSS expects that the volunteering commit for at least a period of 6 months to achieve continuity in any given teaching/hands-on activity

Employee 2: A full-time employee of DSS, belongs and lives in the BSN community and thus understands the various problems of the community (Rs. 5000/mo)

Background: DSS runs three ambulances (Maruti Omni Vans) within Mumbai
Ambulance service also used for transferring patients from Sangli and Satara
A bigger one with oxygen, ECG and other facilities in the pipeline
Budget: Rs. 10000/month covering, driver and fuel cost (annual budget: Rs. 120000)

Medical Camps
Background: DSS conducts free medical camps in slums across Mumbai and Thane
The camps include pathological tests, distribution of spectacles and follow-up in specialty hospitals

Mahila Takrar Nivaran Kendra (MTNK)
Background: Women residing in slums are oppressed and apprehensive of lodging a complaint at the police station, either out of fear of society or due to fear of their spouses and family members. DSS along with the police conceived the idea of Mahila Takrar Nivaran Kendra in order to help women in distress.
Objectives: To give the women a listening ear and to take cognizance of the offences perpetrated against them; To work with individuals, families, groups and communities so as to create harmonious relationships; To coordinate with the police in cases of crimes against women; To motivate distressed women to be independent and to take decisions on their own
Mahila Takrar Nivaran Kendra (MTNK)
Time Line:
MTNK is functional in 5 police stations in the Western Suburbs (Kashimira, Mira Road, Bangur Nagar, Malad, Goregaon) of Mumbai;
Two in Pune, Two in Sholapur and One in Aurangabad to be started in the near future
Requirement: At least 2 DSS personnel have 3hr sessions/week in each of the police station to listen, record and document the offence and often followed by counseling
A consultant lawyer works on the legal aspects of each case
Long Term Goal: To make sure that cases involving women are heard and dispersed ASAP without the involvement of Courts
Already running…scope for new volunteers available
Mahila Takrar Nivaran Kendra (MTNK)
Budget:
20 volunteers across 10 stations are paid Rs. 150 honorarium/week (20x150x4): Rs 12000/mo (Annual Budget: Rs.144000)
Consultant Lawyer: Rs.5000/mo (Annual Budget: Rs.60000)
Miscellaneous Expenses: (Photocopy, Home Visits) Rs. 500/month/center (Annual Budget: Rs.60000)
Training of Volunteers: Once in 3 months (Total of 4 sessions in a year)(Annual Budget: Rs. 40000)

A word about DSS’ Chairman and Director…
Desh Seva Samiti (DSS) is the initiative of Dr. Avisha Kulkarni who has been passionately working for social causes for the last 7 years. Issues on women empowerment, environment and education have been her focus and thus most activities of DSS revolve around the same. She is a full time honorary director of DSS and is quite determined to take it forward in every respect.
S Balakrishnan, chairman of DSS, is a senior journalist with deep social commitment. He has been the pillar behind DSS right from its inception and has been driving each and every cause of DSS. He is into social work informally for over 30 years and in an institutional form through DSS for the past 7 years.

DSS Sports Academy
Background: As part of fulfilling wholesome development and rendering opportunity to Bhagat Singh Nagar Community kids, DSS is in the process of setting up a Sports Academy
Judo classes are ongoing in a rented facility since October 2009
Best of the coaches are being roped in for this initiative
Apart from exposure and healthy life style offered for the kids, the idea is to identify talent and groom them for advance levels

Background: DSS has set up an operational kitchen in their community center for women to provide services for cut vegetables
At the moment, the service is to buy, clean and cut vegetables, seal them and sell as 250 gm packets for office going community in Goregaon Station
Requirement: Seeking partners to market the above service in large scale
Time Line: Infrastructure and the work force ready
Goal: Women from the community will run this activity. To bring consistent work and revenue generation for the women involved
