Index to the Moyer Probate Records for Berks County, Pennsylvania 1800-1915

Introduction. In an effort to scale a brick wall in my genealogical searches, I have gone through all the Moyer estate files for Berks County available on the FamilySearch website. If you have used these, you know that the chief obstacle is not knowing at what image one file stops and another starts. Since I had to keep track of these image numbers for myself, sharing my chart with others searching the Moyer files makes sense to me.

I was primarily interested in files prior to 1900. Thus I have skimmed each file for immediate kin of the deceased, but only for files up to 1900. I have included the later files but have not read them for relationships. I've done a quick and dirty job of deciphering names and relationships in the pre-1900 files, and I know you will find mistakes and omissions. Please do not take my chart as gospel; mine your relevant files for yourself. Sometimes it was difficult to know whether an executor/ administrator was direct kin to the deceased. I've simply noted these as “admin.”

About my own search—can you help? I am looking for a George W. Moyer who was probably born 1831-1832. Almost the only firm information about him is from the 1860 Census, when he was living in Bern Township. I've learned nothing about his origins or what happened to him after 1860—whether he died in the war, whether he and his wife Esther/Hettie (Hettinger) moved away, or whether they just died without leaving a trace. Here's what I know or have guessed about the relationships. George's eldest child, Franklin married three Berks County women and went to Kansas with the second. He returned to Berks in about 1901.
