1. Australian army key possibly made by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA) - wooden base, 3 terminals at rear. Base 152 x 65mm. Type R688D. Very similar to #2, but with lower fulcrum and contact bases (note different sizes). Dull plated finish to parts. Below is the label that possibly should be on the base. See also #505.

2. Australian army key made by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA). Type R688B wooden base, 3 terminals

at rear. Skirt under knob. Base 151 x 65mm. Label reads TYPE R688B SERIAL No. MANIPULATING KEY 10-232. (some had 10-177). Dull plated finish. R688A was used with 3B Teleradio sets 1940-1942. 3B originally intended for use by mining companies, small boats and missionaries. Also used by Coast Watchers. R688B was later version of R688A. Possibly made pre World War 2. This key was also made by Cinema Engineering P/L. Their label read

‘Type Like ... R688B Manipulating

Key Cinema Engineering Pty Ltd’

A similar key was made by A.V. Sales Pty Ltd. With the label reading exactly the same except for the maker’s name.

4. U.S. Bunnell 150 ohm relay. Brass fittings. Ebonite base mounted on metal base measuring 190 x 86mm. Label on base reads J. H. BUNNELL & CO. NEW YORK N.Y. TYPE 2-2 150 OHMS. MADE IN U.S.A. Upright armature tensioner. 2 terminals at rear and 2 at end. Obtained from U.S.A.

6. U.K. wooden cased Q & I (Quantity and Intensity) meter. Wooden case measures 86 x 101 x 54mm. Calibrated 0-80 each side, 3 brass terminals and ring holder on top. Opens at right hand side with press button. Inside back of case stamped 3980 and sticker. Thick wire terminals 2 and 3 Res .185 ohms Res = 1.9 amps deflect needle 45 degrees. Fine wire terminals 1 and 3 Res = 49.3 ohms .0056 amps deflect needle 45 degrees.

7. Australian PMG (Postmaster-General’s Department) bakelite milliammeter. Measures 83 x 93 x 101mm Calibrated each side 0 – 100 and marked MILLIAMPERES D.C. Dial reads MASTER INST. CO. MODEL R28 S154/9 C4893 46 No. 3501. (46 possibly indicates 1946 as year of manufacture). Meter and case stamped PMG 7 SYD with arrow head. Two terminal’s in front and small plate screwed to front. Obtained from Amphitheatre, in Victoria and said to have been used in a Post Office in the surrounding area. (Master Inst. Co. was Sydney Co.)

Calibrated 0-40 each side with mA below. Small logo at left and 421635 below. Two terminals on base. Frosted glass at rear. Second logo at right with unreadable printing below. Metal reflecting plate inside.

Tel Co. between relay and key at rear and ‘Patented’ in front of front coil. Stamped J. H. Bunnell & Co. N.Y. front left hand corner of base. Drum has ‘tiger’ striped paint. Two terminals rear left. Obtained from U.S.A.

15. Australian PMG brass key on wooden base measuring 110 x 90mm. 2 terminals on left. ‘PMG’ stamped on top of arm. Wooden knob with hole in centre. Circuit closer and jack for jigger.

16. Australian PMG key. Plated brass fittings on bakelite base 108 x 90mm, 2 terminals on left hand side with two sockets added on right rear side. 123/6 54PECO stamped on rear terminal bar. Circuit closer and jigger jack. Bakelite (circles) knob and circuit closer knob. Last style P.M.G. key. 54 may indicate 1954 as date of manufacture. Significance of PECO is not known. See also sounder #583 with PECO stamping.

18. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 83mm. Embossed at rear of base ‘Postal Workshops Melbourne’. Made during WW2 using army WT8Amp keys with substitution of a longer lever and addition of circuit closer and jack in front left of base for jigger. Wooden knob. Arm stamped S123-6 C3984 44. Also made with round cornered base and Postal Workshops Melbourne enclosed in circle at rear.

19. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 90mm. Two terminals at left. Circuit closer and jack for jigger. Bakelite circle pattern knob and wooden circuit closer knob. Two holes wrongly drilled into base with resultant cracks.

20. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 80mm. Used on open circuit working (order wire etc.).

21. Australian New South Wales Government Railways (N.S.W.G.R.) brass key on wooden base 108 x 77mm. Bar through back stop. Butterfly screw on back of arm for tightening back stop screw. Wooden knob. Circuit closer with wooden knob. 2 terminals on left hand side of base. Very similar to PMG key. Stamped A13 on front of base. These are said to have been made in a ‘tin shed’ at the Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Sydney. Obtained from Sydney.

22. Australian N.S.W.G.R. (New South Wales Government Railways) brass key on wooden base 108 x 73mm. Bar through back stop. Butterfly screw on back of arm for tightening back stop screw. Two terminals on left hand side of base. No circuit closer, indicating for use on open circuits. Wooden knob. Very similar to PMG key. These are said to have been made in a ‘tin shed’ at the Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Sydney. Obtained from Sydney.

23. Australian ‘Clipsal’ brass key on black bakelite base measuring 116 x 72mm. ‘Clipsal’ embossed on front of base under bakelite knob and ‘Made in Australia’ embossed underneath base. 3 terminals on right hand side of base. Large black bakelite skirt under black bakelite knob. Wire from fulcrum to arm. Clipsal keys were made by Gerrard Industries, Adelaide South Australia initially for the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2 and were popular with amateur radio operators after the war. Clipsal keys are often wrongly described as P.M.G. keys. Clipsal keys did not have circuit closers. See also #24.

The company F Dirks, was founded in the Sydney suburb of Ersksineville in 1936 by a German immigrant, Frederick Boyd Dirks. They made bakelite products such as ashtrays, single strip heaters, and Morse key components. In 1946, the company name was changed to Blue Point products P/L. The name was inspired by the name ‘Blau Punkt’, a German electrical supplier. In 1973, the company was purchased by Gerard Industries P/L (which was known for its line of Clipsal products). Blue Point keys were identified by the words Blue and Point with a blue dot between them.

Two ‘feet’ mounted on top of frame and damper so that it can be turned upside down for left hand use. Sticker under base reads RCAF Ref. 10F/7390. Can also be turned on side and used as straight key. Obtained from Wales.

Complete with original cord and plug, small portion of which is missing. Obtained from Sydney, but originally from Melbourne and told that a box of 100 had been imported into Melbourne and the importer could not pay the Customs duty on arrival. Two Melbourne Telegraphists bought them at auction and sold them for £15 each. Two are known to have originated from Tasmania (one via Melbourne) and four from Melbourne. Whereabouts of others is not known. Obtained from Sydney.

Some were fitted with RAF type 10A/7790 with skirt beneath the knob.

Since enemy troops would shoot at signal lamps, the key was supplied with a long cable so the operator could flash the lamp while standing safely far away from the light itself. J51 stamped on thumb side. Approx. 147 x 13mm. Obtained from U.S.A. There is also a very similar French version of this key.

Large clip under knob normally holds two sections together and when placed on skirt, key emits continuous signal. Measures 115 x 35mm. The case on all ‘bathtubs’ was designed to enclose any spark gap in order not to blow up the aircraft in the event of a fuel leak.

Canadian Bathtubs were black. UK and Australian were brown.

114. New Zealand ‘Supreme’ nickel plated semi automatic key made by Eric Sorensen for ‘Tricity House’, Christchurch. Base 155 x 90mm. Very similar to Vibroplex Original. Has clear perspex thumb piece. Black bakelite finger piece. Two terminals on right hand side. Hooked ‘drop down’ damper. Sticker with K24 under base. Obtained from New Zealand.

115. Australian ‘Paruscio’ semi automatic key. Nickel plated base 160 x 87mm. Inscribed L. A. Paruscio. C.T.O.

Melbourne. Swing down type damper and large 5 sided weight. Two black plastic cap terminals on right hand side. Bakelite finger/thumb pieces and circuit closer on front right. This was the first jigger made by Paruscio (a Melbourne Telegraphist) and was his personal machine. It bears a single indent under the base signifying serial No. 1. The number of indents related to the serial numbers and it is thought about thirteen were made before Vibroplex objected. See picture below for serial number 10. Black bakelite finger/thumb pieces and circuit closer on front right. Label reads ‘SHURDOT’ MORSE KEY MADE BY J. SCACH 10 RANDALL ST MORDIALLOC. ‘Scach’ is an abbreviation of his correct name ‘Scachiemento’. This may be a later model than Shurdot #394. ‘Foot’ near dash terminal is further away from the corner giving better access to the dash terminal; the screw holding the circuit closer screws into the base rather than going right through and the circuit closer is shorter. Shurdots did not carry serial numbers. Obtained from Melbourne Vic.

T type damper with wheel. Plate reads THE VIBROPLEX TRADE MARK HORACE G. MARTIN NEW YORK. Second plate between dot post and front terminal screw stamped 10279. Black bakelite finger/thumb pieces and circuit closer knob. A later model had a round pendulum. Obtained from USA.
