1. Australian army key possibly made by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA) - wooden base, 3 terminals at rear. Base 152 x 65mm. Type R688D. Very similar to #2, but with lower fulcrum and contact bases (note different sizes). Dull plated finish to parts. Below is the label that possibly should be on the base. See also #505.

2. Australian army key made by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia (AWA). Type R688B wooden base, 3 terminals

at rear. Skirt under knob. Base 151 x 65mm. Label reads TYPE R688B SERIAL No. MANIPULATING KEY 10-232. (some had 10-177). Dull plated finish. R688A was used with 3B Teleradio sets 1940-1942. 3B originally intended for use by mining companies, small boats and missionaries. Also used by Coast Watchers. R688B was later version of R688A. Possibly made pre World War 2. This key was also made by Cinema Engineering P/L. Their label read

‘Type Like ... R688B Manipulating

Key Cinema Engineering Pty Ltd’

A similar key was made by A.V. Sales Pty Ltd. With the label reading exactly the same except for the maker’s name.

3. Australian army key YA1860 from Telephone Set D MKV. Base 53 x 41mm. Wide arm on key. See #268.

4. U.S. Bunnell 150 ohm relay. Brass fittings. Ebonite base mounted on metal base measuring 190 x 86mm. Label on base reads J. H. BUNNELL & CO. NEW YORK N.Y. TYPE 2-2 150 OHMS. MADE IN U.S.A. Upright armature tensioner. 2 terminals at rear and 2 at end. Obtained from U.S.A.

5. U.S. Western Union 4 ohm relay, single coil. Wooden base 139 x 55mm marked 3B WUTCO 4 Ohm on front left and Signal Relay 3C front right. 4 terminals at rear. Upright tension spring winder. Under base stamped 9 17 Nyxx 7 26 with other unreadable marks and stamp. Obtained from U.S.A.

6. U.K. wooden cased Q & I (Quantity and Intensity) meter. Wooden case measures 86 x 101 x 54mm. Calibrated 0-80 each side, 3 brass terminals and ring holder on top. Opens at right hand side with press button. Inside back of case stamped 3980 and sticker. Thick wire terminals 2 and 3 Res .185 ohms Res = 1.9 amps deflect needle 45 degrees. Fine wire terminals 1 and 3 Res = 49.3 ohms .0056 amps deflect needle 45 degrees.

7. Australian PMG (Postmaster-General’s Department) bakelite milliammeter. Measures 83 x 93 x 101mm Calibrated each side 0 – 100 and marked MILLIAMPERES D.C. Dial reads MASTER INST. CO. MODEL R28 S154/9 C4893 46 No. 3501. (46 possibly indicates 1946 as year of manufacture). Meter and case stamped PMG 7 SYD with arrow head. Two terminal’s in front and small plate screwed to front. Obtained from Amphitheatre, in Victoria and said to have been used in a Post Office in the surrounding area. (Master Inst. Co. was Sydney Co.)

8. Australian PMG black metal milliammeter on bakelite base measuring 103 x 103mm. 94mm high at rear.

Calibrated 0-40 each side with mA below. Small logo at left and 421635 below. Two terminals on base. Frosted glass at rear. Second logo at right with unreadable printing below. Metal reflecting plate inside.

9. U.S. Central Scientific Co. Cenco metal galvanometer MEASURING 120 x 106 x 85mm. Calibrated 0 – 50 both sides – and +. Dial reads GALVANOMETER Trade Mark CENCO REG U.S. PAT OFF. MADE EXCLUSIVELY FOR CENTRAL CIENTIFIC COMPANY by WESTON ELECTRICAL INSTRUMENT CORP NEWARK N.J. U.S.A. Cat. NO. F4462W Mod 375-4 No 43957. 2 terminals on top, 3 buttons on base at front. Directions on plate at back. Underneath base marked Ecole Polytechnique laboratoire de physique (Ecole Polytechnique physics laboratory). Directions plate on back. Left button marked Key 1 / 5volts. Centre button marked Key 2. 0.1 volts. Right red button marked Key 3- Galv. Obtained from Canada and used in that country.

10. U.S. polarised ‘horseshoe’ sounder stamped 1000 ohms 7A on wooden base measuring 139 x 76mm. Large horseshoe shaped magnet at rear. ‘Western Electric made in USA’ on striker bar. ‘12087’ on silencer. Two terminals at rear. Vertical spring. Obtained from U.S.A.

11. U.S. small relay. Wooden base measuring 128 x 95mm with label reading No. 1238 20 ohms and 1872 Edwards in triangle. Brass and metal parts. Two terminals both front and rear. Two coils mounted one above the other. Large armature. Obtained from U.S.A.

12. Unknown jigger all parts 6 sided, extra long 6 sided weight. Ebonite base measuring 132 x 74mm. Two terminals on right hand side. Single finger/thumb paddle. Obtained from Adelaide.

13. U.S. Western Electric ‘snare drum’ relay. Brass fittings on wooden base 220 x 120mm. Key on right with circuit closer stamped WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Relay with ‘snare drum’ covering of coils on left side. Small brass plate at left rear reads WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY. Base stamped WE TEL. CO. 150 ohms just below plate. Front of base stamped PAT’D. Written under base ‘Rewound to 20 ohms 6-May-79’ Obtained from U.S.A.

14. U.S. Bunnell ‘snare drum relay’. Brass fittings on wooden base measuring 250 x 128mm. Key on right stamped ‘J. H. Bunnell & Co New York U.S.A.’ on circuit closer. Base stamped 150 Ohms W. U. Tel Co. between relay and key at rear and ‘Patented’ in front of front coil. Stamped J. H. Bunnell & Co. N.Y. front left hand corner of base. Drum has ‘tiger’ striped paint. Two terminals rear left. Obtained from U.S.A.

15. Australian PMG brass key on wooden base measuring 110 x 90mm. 2 terminals on left. ‘PMG’ stamped on top of arm. Wooden knob with hole in centre. Circuit closer and jack for jigger.

16. Australian PMG key. Plated brass fittings on bakelite base 108 x 90mm, 2 terminals on left hand side with two sockets added on right rear side. 123/6 54PECO stamped on rear terminal bar. Circuit closer and jigger jack. Bakelite (circles) knob and circuit closer knob. Last style P.M.G. key. 54 may indicate 1954 as date of manufacture. Significance of PECO is not known. See also sounder #583 with PECO stamping.

17. U.K. brass key on wooden base 110 x 90mm. ‘Siemens Brothers & Co Limited London’ (This dates the key post 1880) stamped on front side of bridge. (x cut into underside of base). Remains of paper label under base with writing 0 9.66 Jxx Mosx. Wooden knob. Later circuit closer and wooden knob added. Obtained from A.C.T.

18. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 83mm. Embossed at rear of base ‘Postal Workshops Melbourne’. Made during WW2 using army WT8Amp keys with substitution of a longer lever and addition of circuit closer and jack in front left of base for jigger. Wooden knob. Arm stamped S123-6 C3984 44. Also made with round cornered base and Postal Workshops Melbourne enclosed in circle at rear.

19. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 90mm. Two terminals at left. Circuit closer and jack for jigger. Bakelite circle pattern knob and wooden circuit closer knob. Two holes wrongly drilled into base with resultant cracks.

20. Australian PMG plated brass key on bakelite base 108 x 80mm. Used on open circuit working (order wire etc.).

5498/123/7 stamped on centre bar under base. No circuit closer. 3 terminal keys did not carry a jigger jack. Bakelite knob with circle pattern.

21. Australian New South Wales Government Railways (N.S.W.G.R.) brass key on wooden base 108 x 77mm. Bar through back stop. Butterfly screw on back of arm for tightening back stop screw. Wooden knob. Circuit closer with wooden knob. 2 terminals on left hand side of base. Very similar to PMG key. Stamped A13 on front of base. These are said to have been made in a ‘tin shed’ at the Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Sydney. Obtained from Sydney.

22. Australian N.S.W.G.R. (New South Wales Government Railways) brass key on wooden base 108 x 73mm. Bar through back stop. Butterfly screw on back of arm for tightening back stop screw. Two terminals on left hand side of base. No circuit closer, indicating for use on open circuits. Wooden knob. Very similar to PMG key. These are said to have been made in a ‘tin shed’ at the Eveleigh Railway Workshops, Sydney. Obtained from Sydney.

23. Australian ‘Clipsal’ brass key on black bakelite base measuring 116 x 72mm. ‘Clipsal’ embossed on front of base under bakelite knob and ‘Made in Australia’ embossed underneath base. 3 terminals on right hand side of base. Large black bakelite skirt under black bakelite knob. Wire from fulcrum to arm. Clipsal keys were made by Gerrard Industries, Adelaide South Australia initially for the Royal Australian Air Force during WW2 and were popular with amateur radio operators after the war. Clipsal keys are often wrongly described as P.M.G. keys. Clipsal keys did not have circuit closers. See also #24.

The company F Dirks, was founded in the Sydney suburb of Ersksineville in 1936 by a German immigrant, Frederick Boyd Dirks. They made bakelite products such as ashtrays, single strip heaters, and Morse key components. In 1946, the company name was changed to Blue Point products P/L. The name was inspired by the name ‘Blau Punkt’, a German electrical supplier. In 1973, the company was purchased by Gerard Industries P/L (which was known for its line of Clipsal products). Blue Point keys were identified by the words Blue and Point with a blue dot between them.

30. U.S. Speed-x model 501 (T Bar) all metal chrome plated semi automatic key. Base measures 157 x 88mm. Label at rear reads SPEED→X MODEL 501 MFD BY LES LOGAN CO. SAN FRANCISCO CALIF., U.S.A. T Bar style with two triangular shaped black bakelite finger/thumb pieces, with two circles stamped in each. Long circuit closer running left to right and extra wire from lever to adjusting screw on right. Two terminals on front right hand side. Two weights.

31. U.S. SPEED-X semi automatic key. Black base measures 157 x 75mm. Cut off triangular shaped label reads E. F. Johnson Company Waseca, Minnesota, U.S.A. SPEED-X Cat. No. 114-520 SEMI-AUTOMATIC key. Two terminals right hand side with circuit closer. Two adjustable triangular finger/thumb pieces. Large spring loaded weight. A second version had a rectangular shaped label.

32. Royal Canadian Air Force semi automatic key made by Wilson. Metal base measures 155 x 75mm. Blue/grey wrinkle paint. Two terminals front right with post for spare weight. Large round spring loaded weight. Label reads KEYS. MORSE. SEMI-AUTOMATIC R.C.A.F. REF. NO. 10f/7390 MADE IN CANADA BY WILSON MFG Co. TORONTO. ONTARIO. Two ‘feet’ mounted on top of frame and damper so that it can be turned upside down for left hand use. Sticker under base reads RCAF Ref. 10F/7390. Can also be turned on side and used as straight key. Obtained from Wales.

33. U.S. ‘Cedar Rapids’ semi automatic key. Black metal base measures 185 x 78mm. ELECTRIC SPECIALTY MFG. CO. CEDAR RAPIDS IOWA embossed under base. Two weights. Round rubber tyre damper. Two terminals on front right. Originally sold either assembled or in kit form. Obtained from U.S.A.

34. Australian PMG ground switch, Brown ebonite base measuring 112 x 76mm. Brass fittings. 2 terminals at rear.

Long lever stamped P.M.G. 2494. High ebonite knob. One brass block on right hand side missing. Wire connecting arm to base block. 12 scratched under base. Used in duplex and quadruplex telegraphy.

35. Australian PMG ground switch. Black ebonite base measures 73 x 49mm. Two terminals at rear. High handle on arm which connects to central base by wire. 3 blocks at front. Arm stamped PMG 2802. Small crack on right side of base. Used in duplex and quadruplex telegraphy.

57. Large ebonite base (150 x 100mm) brass key, 2 terminals on right hand side. Rear terminal marked A C BAT and BAT on front terminal. Wooden knob.

58. U.S. ‘Prince Albert’ tobacco tin (109 x 77 x 23mm) often used in the resonator box to alter the loudness of the sounder. Obtained from Canberra.

59. French S.A.R.A.M (Societe d’Applications Radioelectriques a l’Aeronautique et la Marine – Aeronautics and marine radio applications) military all metal key, 2 large adjusting screws on left hand side. Wired from terminals on centre of key. Hinged black metal cover. Black bakelite knob and skirt. Base measures 95 x 60mm. c1938-40s.

Obtained from Brisbane and said to have been rescued from being dumped at sea from an Australian warship at Tarakan at the close of WW2.

84. US Dunduplex all metal nickel plated semi automatic key. Base measures 135 x 75mm. THOS J. DUNN & Co PAT’D 1909 NEW YORK DUNDUPLEX 5037 stamped on base. Two terminals at rear single black bakelite round finger/thumb piece and circuit closer on front right. Two black bakelite buttons on top for dots and dashes. Complete with original cord and plug, small portion of which is missing. Obtained from Sydney, but originally from Melbourne and told that a box of 100 had been imported into Melbourne and the importer could not pay the Customs duty on arrival. Two Melbourne Telegraphists bought them at auction and sold them for £15 each. Two are known to have originated from Tasmania (one via Melbourne) and four from Melbourne. Whereabouts of others is not known. Obtained from Sydney.

88. Australian plug switch - circular. Ebonite base measures 107 x 102mm. Seven brass segments with 5 connection holes. All segments have brass connection screws numbered 3 blank 1 2 4 5/6 and blank. No. 1 earths the up line.

No. 2 earths the down line. No. 3 short circuits the line battery and only used momentarily. No. 4 short circuits the key and relay and also acts similarly to No. 3 No. 5 cuts out the instrument, leaving the line battery in circuit. No. 6 connects the local battery. Possibly S.A. Railways. Obtained from Adelaide SA and used with embosser #230.

89. Australian section switch - rectangular. Ebonite base measures 120 x 73. Two end brass earth bars (stamped E) measure 55 x 21mm and four central bars stamped U (up line) D (down line) X Y (instruments) measure 24 x 34mm. Two threaded plugs. Used by Australian PMG Dept throughout Victoria in small Post Offices. Section switches replaced two earlier versions of Commutator. See #390 and #391. Obtained from Bendigo Vic.

91. U.K. double current key. Ebonite base mounted on wooden sub base measuring 205 x 107mm. Send/receive switch on left. Glass and brass round cover, all brass fittings. 3 terminals at rear, 1 terminal front each side. Stamped G.P.O. 248 on front right ebonite base and 10 and 234 under base. Wood knob. U.K. GPO keys were made at their Holborn, London works. Obtained from Wales. (Wyn Davies).

92. U.K. brass single current key on wooden base (151 x 74mm), 3 terminals (1 each side and rear) on brass blocks. L on ‘L’ shape brass block, R on ‘L’ shaped extension to fulcrum. Wooden knob. Obtained in 1994 from a Sydney lady who said it was used by a 90 year old ex lighthouse keeper.

93. German Siemens Halske brass key on large wooden base (148 x 99mm). 3 terminals - One on back stop, one on front contact bar and one on right back of fulcrum. 15 stamped on right side of fulcrum. Red lock nut on rear stop. Triangular shaped fulcrum, 4 screws holes to base. Black wooden knob. Siemens Halske operated between 1858 and 1865. Obtained from Wales. Wyn Davies)

97. Czechoslovakian army key c.1940. Bakelite base and cover 110 x 57mm. Prijem (Receive) ↑ ↓ VYSILANI (Transmit) on knob frame, 2 pin plug on cloth covered cord. Metal plate 148 x 65mm screwed to bakelite key base. Used in Czech RM31 field set. Obtained from Sydney.

98. German Democratic Republic (G.D.R.) K40 bakelite key, made only for the East German army. Hinged top cover L38 within circle under base. Base 133 x 64mm. Similar to K64 which had a connection cable. 31 Small crack on front right of cover. Two holes at top back of cover. Obtained from Sydney.

99. German wooden base (150 x 100mm) key. 3 terminals at rear. Tension adjustment by lift rod secured with screw on arm. Wooden knob. MADE IN GERMANY stamped on front right side of base. Wire from arm to anvil base. Whilst stamped made in Germany some keys were actually made in UK.

101. Australian army training Set Universal No. 1. Key. WT 8AMP key in metal cover with left hand side jack for hand microphone and right hand side jack for head phones. Top cover marked UNIT OPERATOR NO1 MK2 YA 8414. Felt under base which measures 130 x 100mm and 75mm high. Two slots at back of cover for 4 prong plugs. Used for group (36?) training. Mk1 used 6 point plugs and sockets. MK2 used 4 point plugs and sockets. See also 102 and 103.

104. U.K. Navy key mounted on ebonite base 161 x 75mm. Front edge of base has metal plate inscribed ADMIRALTY PATTERN 1271. BUZZER REPEATER AND KEY UNIT. SER. NO A 1279 YEAR 1940 MADE BY A.G.I. LTD. Key on right of base. Five terminals at rear numbered 1 to 5 from left, with harness set behind. On Off switch on front left embossed A.D. Patt 5000. Lamp holder and lamp in front of switch with telephone type earpiece, embossed 13 underneath, mounted behind. WT8AMP key with no base of its own, but fitted into the main base. Some were fitted with RAF type 10A/7790 with skirt beneath the knob.

105. U.K. Navy key. Marked ADMY PATT No. 7681 Key Morse Serial No. Rocker embossed on left side of bakelite base 145 x 90mm and Front Contact on right. Skirt under knob (black bakelite). Front contact embossed on right side of base. Two sets of cable clamps at rear. Large contacts. Tension screw marked LIFT and Turn. Often supplied with a pressed steel cover (see 3rd pic below courtesy John Snell). These were standard fittings on UK warships from about 1942 – 1966.

ROCKER marked on left side of base and FRONT CONTACT marked on right hand side. All steel fittings. Rear cord harness missing. Black bakelite knob with skirt (large portion of skirt missing). Triangular cover under base.

107. U.K. Air Force key Type D. Heavy brass key on ebonite base 182 x 100 x 64mm high, brown bakelite knob.

Bakelite screw on cover with hole for knob. Cover embossed ‘KEY. MORSE. Type D. REF. No.10F/7375 A ♚ M SERIAL No. (Two cracks on top of cover and broken section right hand rear. Has heavy spring mounted electrical contacts. As lever is depressed the 1½" silver contacts close and at the same time wipe diagonally against each other. This makes a more reliable contact and may reduce contact arcing. (See Australian version

at 364). (A ♚ M indicates Air Ministry). Obtained from England.

Right hand side of base marked 4428 MADE IN ENGLAND ↑ with logo at either end. Obtained from Adelaide.

110. U.S. army J38 key. Bakelite base 75 x 120mm. Two terminals at rear marked TEL (left) and LINE (right) with arrows at each end of words. J-38 stamped on front under knob and L in circle under base indicating key was made by the Lionel Corp. Obtained from U.S.A.

111. U.S. army J51 metal finger key. Two terminals on front ‘scissors’ type hand pieces. Olive colour with black terminals. Used to operate SE-11 Signal Lamp set. Since enemy troops would shoot at signal lamps, the key was supplied with a long cable so the operator could flash the lamp while standing safely far away from the light itself. J51 stamped on thumb side. Approx. 147 x 13mm. Obtained from U.S.A. There is also a very similar French version of this key.

112. Canadian Grimmer Wilson tear shaped metal key. Base measures 118 x 56 at extremes. 2 terminals at rear 10F/556 on top of arm. GRIMMER WILSON stamped under base. Bakelite knob.

113. U.K. brown bakelite ‘Bathtub’ bomber aircraft key. 10F/606 on inside base, on front of base Ref No. 10F/7741. On skirt Ref 10A 7790. On each terminal knob Ref No. 10A 7789. Large clip under knob normally holds two sections together and when placed on skirt, key emits continuous signal. Measures 115 x 35mm. The case on all ‘bathtubs’ was designed to enclose any spark gap in order not to blow up the aircraft in the event of a fuel leak.

Canadian Bathtubs were black. UK and Australian were brown.

114. New Zealand ‘Supreme’ nickel plated semi automatic key made by Eric Sorensen for ‘Tricity House’, Christchurch. Base 155 x 90mm. Very similar to Vibroplex Original. Has clear perspex thumb piece. Black bakelite finger piece. Two terminals on right hand side. Hooked ‘drop down’ damper. Sticker with K24 under base. Obtained from New Zealand.

115. Australian ‘Paruscio’ semi automatic key. Nickel plated base 160 x 87mm. Inscribed L. A. Paruscio. C.T.O.

Melbourne. Swing down type damper and large 5 sided weight. Two black plastic cap terminals on right hand side. Bakelite finger/thumb pieces and circuit closer on front right. This was the first jigger made by Paruscio (a Melbourne Telegraphist) and was his personal machine. It bears a single indent under the base signifying serial No. 1. The number of indents related to the serial numbers and it is thought about thirteen were made before Vibroplex objected. See picture below for serial number 10. They are very similar to an ‘original’ model Vibroplex. Obtained from Canberra ACT. (Curly Moger, now sk).

116. Australian ‘Shurdot’ semi automatic key. Black wrinkle paint base 166 x 76mm. Two terminals on right hand side. Bridge type damper with rubber tyre wheel. Black bakelite finger/thumb pieces and circuit closer on front right. Label reads ‘SHURDOT’ MORSE KEY MADE BY J. SCACH 10 RANDALL ST MORDIALLOC. ‘Scach’ is an abbreviation of his correct name ‘Scachiemento’. This may be a later model than Shurdot #394. ‘Foot’ near dash terminal is further away from the corner giving better access to the dash terminal; the screw holding the circuit closer screws into the base rather than going right through and the circuit closer is shorter. Shurdots did not carry serial numbers. Obtained from Melbourne Vic.
