DISCHARGE, SEDIMENT, CHEMICAL QUALITY,

AND WATER TEMPERATURE

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to provide a convenient index ofbasic data on Texas streams and reservoirs during the years 1882 to1951• Included are records of flow, stage, contents, temperature, chemical quality, and sediment loadD These records have beencollected on a continuous or periodic basis at stations maintainedby the UD S. Geological Survey, the Texas State Board of WaterEngineers, and other agencies0

The first stream flow station in Texas was established by theUo So Geological Survey on the Rio Grande at El Paso in 1889, A fewmiscellaneous records of stream flow were collected prior to thattime0 In 1897 a systematic study was begun by the Uo So GeologicalSurvey on some central Texas streams; however, not until 19159 whenthe Texas Legislature appropriated funds for stream measurementinvestigations by the Texas State Board of Water Engineers, was asubstantial beginning made toward the systematic collection of streamflow records o In the same year the State Board of Water Engineersentered into an agreement with the U. S0 Geological Survey forcooperative investigations of the water resources of the State. These cooperative investigations have continued to date.

In recent years, the State Board of Water Engineers and theUo So Geological Survey have expanded investigations through cooperation with the Corps of Engineers, Uo So Army; the Bureau of Reclamation,U. S. Department of Interior; the Soil Conservation Service, U. S.Department of Agriculture; and several River Authorities and otherpolitical subdivisions of the State of Texas.

The Weather Bureau, Uo Se Department of Commerce, maintains anetwork of river stage stations for flood forecasting operations.Such stations common to the Weather Bureau and the U. So GeologicalSurvey are maintained and operated jointly for the sake of efficiencyand economy. At some of the stations, records of stage collected bythe Weather Bureau extend beyond the period of discharge recordscollected by the Uo S, Geological Survey„ The index includes suchWeather Bureau records even though they are published only inofficial publications of the Weather Bureau0

Subsequent to July 1931 the International Boundary and WaterCommission, United States and Mexico, assumed the operation of allstream flow stations on the Rio Grande and near the mouth of its

Page 4: INDEX OF SUBFACE WATEB BECORDS 1882-1951 · collected on a continuous or periodic basis at stations maintained by the UD S. Geological Survey, the Texas State Board of Water Engineers,

tributaries. Records collected by that agency are published in itsannual series of Water Bulletins. These records are included in the

index to provide information on this important river basine

The Soil Conservation Service, Uo So Department of Agriculture, has maintained a cooperative sediment program with the State Board ofWater Engineers for many years• Records collected under this programhave been published by those agencies0

The Uo So Geological Survey is the principal Federal agency thatcollects and publishes basic data on stream flow, stage, chemicalquality, water temperature, and reservoir content of Texas streams. These data, with few exceptions, have been published in Uo So GeologicalSurvey publications and in special reports of the State Board of WaterEngineers.

Data contained in this report were compiled from official publications and files of the U. So Geological Survey, U. S. Soil ConservationService, UG So Weather Bureau, International Boundary and WaterCommission, and the State Board of Water Engineers.

EXPLANATION

The index lists the stations in downstream order adopted by theU. So Geological Survey in 1951 and shows graphically the periods forwhich records of stream flow, stage, chemical quality, water temperature, reservoir content, and sediment load are available.

Station names are those given in the most recent publications.Parentheses around part of a station name indicate that the enclosedwords were used in an earlier publication

Breaks of less than twelve months in the periods of record are notshown. No attempt was made to identify partial years at the beginningor ending of a period of record but any year having a partial record wasshown in the index0 No indication was made as to whether a record is

continuous or periodic, or as to its accuracy. The primary intent isto show that certain types of records are available at the locations forthe indicated periods.

Surface water records listed herein are found in the files or in

publications of the Uo S. Geological Survey, the International Boundaryand Water Commission, the U. S. Weather Bureau, and the U. S. GeologicalSurvey's cooperating agencies.

Compilation of the index was made from Uo S0 Geological Survey'sSurface Water district office files and the following publications.

The Rio Grande portion of the index was corrected to 1950in the El Paso Office of the International Boundary and Water Commission.

U. S. Weather Bureau records were compiled from current lists submitted by the various district offices in this region.

The Index was compiled under the direction of Co E. Ellsworth,District Engineer, Austin, Texas, by P0 H0 Holland and Co Ruth Swanson
