interviews• When the focus is on investigating the mindset

or how ‘informants’ conceptualize reality.

• When the focus is on understanding better a

phenomena in terms of seeking the underlyingreasons for such a phenomena to take place.

• When the intention is to figure out what type of‘universe’ in terms of uniqueness of thatuniverse.

What are the essentials of In-Depth

Interviews• You are not trying to support your analyses

based majority opinions but exhaustiveness ofpossible variations.

• Starting with a ‘tabula rasa’ : everything is

possible, without preconceived notions.

• You are eager to learn, and listen.

• You let the informants ‘dwell’ into his/her way of

reasoning.

• Basic principle of ‘listening’

What are the steps to conduct in-

depth interviews1. ‘Empty yourself from your own categorizations or

stereotypical beliefs.

2. Start by making the informant/s comfortable talking to you-gain his/her confidence.

3. Find out things around the setting that seems to be of interestto the informant. Start from there, and ‘break the ice’.

4. Give positive feedbacks, show your interest to know betterand deeper, ask the ‘why’s.

5. Ask questions that are pertinent to the informants not you soyou can enter his/her world.

6. Follow the path of thinking of the informant and go further intohis/her way of looking at things.

7. Sometimes the informant will tell you ‘ I have never thought

about that, but then let him/her try to figure out what s/hewants to say,

8. Don’t put words into their mouth.
