TASK:

1. What did mother pit in the basket? Pg262. What punctuation is used when someone is talking? Pg273. How did the author describe the air? Pg284. Why did the huntsman call the big bad wolf a nuisance? Pg305. Why did Little Red Riding stray from her path?

Answers 1.Mother put freshly baked cake, some fruit, some soft creamy cheese and a jar of honey into the basket.2.Inverted commas3.The author described the air as sweet with the perfume of flowers.4.The huntsman called the big bad wolf a nuisance because he was sneaking into people’s farmyards, wrecking

their vegetable patches and stealing their animals.5.Little Red Riding Hood strayed from her path because she wanted to pick some flowers for her grandmother.

A little girl loved her red hood so much that she wore it all the time. The only time she would take it off was when her mother demanded her without refusal (insisted) to take it off in order to wash it. One day, her mother wanted Little Riding Hood to take food to her grandmother. She reminded her not to wonder off (stray) from the path. Little Red Riding Hood set off on her journey to her grandmothers but started to feel scared of scary creatures hiding waiting to jump on her (lurking). She started to run and almost ran straight into a huntsman. He told her that they could walk together because he was trying to catch a big bad wolf that he described as someone is annoying or disrupting others (nuisance). I wonder what happens next. Let’s read and find out.

Little Red Riding Hood

Once upon a time there was a little girl called Little Red Riding Hood, who always wore a beautiful, bright red cloak with a bright red hood. She lived in a cottage on the edge of some deep, dark woods. One day, Little Red Riding Hood’s mother gave her a pot of Brussels sprout soup. “Take this to your grandmother on the other side of the woods but be careful and remember the Rules of the Woods” she said.

“I promise,” said Little Red Riding Hood and off she skipped. As the sun started to disappear, Little Red Riding Hood walked deeper and deeper into the deep, dark woods. Unfortunately, Little Red Riding Hood didn’t see the wolf waiting for her on the path. Clumsily, she stumbled straight into the wolf.

“What are you doing in the middle of the path?” asked Little Red Riding Hood. “I nearly spilled my grandmother’s Brussels sprout soup!” Little Red Riding Hood had forgotten the rule – Don’t talk to wolves. “And where does dear little Granny live?” asked the wolf. “In the cottage on the other side of the woods, but I’m afraid I cannot stop to talk,” replied Little Red Riding Hood. “Before you go, I was thinking,” said the wolf “How nice it would be to take your grandmother some beautiful flowers.

Without warning, the wolf raced to the cottage and knocked on the door. “Come in,” said Grandmother. In a flash, the wolf leapt into the room and gobbled up Little Red Riding Hood’s Grandmother. How wicked the wolf was! Soon there was a knock at the door. “Come in,” snarled the wolf as softly as he could.

“Oh Granny, what large ears you’ve got!” she said.

“All the better to hear you with,” said the wolf.

“Oh Granny, what big eyes you have!” she said.

“All the better to see you with,” said the wolf.

“Oh Granny, how sharp your teeth are!”

“All the better to eat you with.” Suddenly, the wolf gobbled up Little Red Riding Hood. Snoring loudly, he fell to sleep.

“What’s going on?” wondered the woodcutter. After banging the door down, he picked up some scissors and snipped open the wolf’s tummy. What sharp scissors the woodcutter had! To his amazement, out popped Grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood! “What a lucky escape that was!” thought Little Red Riding Hood.

Which country is this? How would you describe the shape of it?

Where in the world is Italy?

Italy is a country in Southern Europe. It is easy to recognise on a map because is it is a peninsula and it is shaped like a boot. Italy is sometimes described as a Mediterranean country or as part of the Mediterranean region because the coastline of Italy is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to being bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Italy is also bordered by four different countries: France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Inside Rome, the capital city of Italy, is the smallest country in the world — Vatican City. San Marino, another of the world’s smallest countries, is located inside Italy.

There are many different islands surrounding Italy but three of them are much bigger than the others. One of the islands, Corsica, belongs to France but the other two, Sicily and Sardinia, are part of Italy. Some of the smaller islands are also part of Italy.

The weather and climate of Italy depend on where you are in the country. Towards the north, the winters are cold and the summers are warm. The weather can also be quite rainy. The south is nearer to the equator and warmer throughout the year. The winters in the south are mild to warm and the summers are very hot because the warm winds blow from the African continent.

Describe the shape of Italy:

What borders Italy?

What is a Mediterranean country?

Which two islands are also part of Italy?

Which countries are located inside Italy?

Is the weather and climate the same across Italy? Explain your answer.

What are some of the key physical features of Italy?

Physical features are natural features and there are many physical features located across Italy. On a map like this we can see the land that is higher. Brown land is higher land and the darker the brown, the higher the land. Using that knowledge we can see that there are many different mountains and hills in Italy. We can see that there is high land running down the middle of the country but even higher land across the north.

We have studied the mountain range along the top of Italy in an earlier lesson — it is the Alps. We know that the Alps are in many different countries and not just Italy. We also know that the tallest mountain in the Alps is called Mont Blanc. Mont Blanc is located on the border between Italy and France.

The mountain range that runs down the middle of Italy is called the Apennines. This mountain range is sometimes called ‘the backbone of Italy’ because it looks very like a backbone (spine). The tallest mountain is the Apennines is Corno Grande.

In addition to there being mountains in Italy, there are also volcanoes. Etna is located on the island of Sicily and is the largest active volcano in Europe. Vesuvius is located near Naples and is the only active volcano on mainland Europe. Other volcanoes in Italy are Vulcano and Stromboli — these volcanoes are separate islands. The photograph here shows Vesuvius which once erupted and destroyed an entire city.
