THE FIRST STAGE OF MY INDEPENDENT PRACTICE IS LOOKING AT THE CHICAGO L TRAIN METRO MAP, I FOUND THIS MAP TO BE VERY CONFUSING TO UNDERSTAND ESPECIALLY THE UNION LOOP PART, WHERE 7 LINES CIRCLE THE SAME AREA OF THE CITY IN CENTRAL CHICAGO, FROM AN OUTSIDER VIEW LOOKING IN I FOUND THE DOWNTOWN DESIGN TO BE VERY CONFUSING AND COMPLEX, MY PLAN WAS TO REDESIGN IT TO SIMPLIFY IT BUT STILL KEEP THE ICONIC STYLE ABOUT IT.

I TRIED TO SIMPLIFY THE VERSION OF THE LOOPS DESIGN BY INCORPORATING SOME FEATURES FROM THE SUCCESSFUL LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP [THE INTERCHANGE POINTS AND THE MERGING OF LINES]

THE 5 LINES THAT USE THE ACTUAL LOOP, TO BREAK THEM DOWN LIKE THIS WAS TO SEE HOW BASIC IT COULD BE MADE, ALSO WHAT WAS NEEDED TO MAKE THE LOOP, AND UNDERSTAND THE LOOP BETTER.

THE DRAWING BOARD WAS MY TIME TO FIGURE OUT ALL THE KINKS AND SOLVE ALL THE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS ON THE LOOP.

IN ORDER TO MAKE IT MORE SIMPLER TO PASSENGERS I DECIDED TO INCORPERATE THE INTERCHANGE POINT DESIGN USED FOR THE LONDON UNDERGROUND.

THIS WORKBOARD WAS ME TRYING TO WORK OUT SPACES AND KEYS AND COD-INGS. SPACE TO FIT STATION NAMES AND INTERCHANGE POINTS TOGETHER IN SOME PARTS FOR EXAMPLE. AND THEN CODING CERTAIN STATIONS DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF TRANSFER THAT WAS AVAILABLE. AND ALSO WORKING OUT HOW TO SHOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE 5 LOOP TRAINS.

THE UNION LOOP
AFTER CREATING THE LOOP I DECIDED TO TAKE ON THE WHOLE MAP AND GIVE IT A NEW STYLE TO SHOW EVERYTHING IN A WAY THAT SHOWS ALL OF THE STA-TIONS EASIER IN MORE OF A PIN POINT STYLE MAP, VERY EASY TO USE.

EVALUATIONI am very excited with my independent practice work as it is me having the chance to experiment and explore one subject that I seriously love, in this portfolio I only managed to create one full body of work over one map, I wanted to be able to do some more, explore another cities map, but I feel that this will be a project I will carry on over the next term and maybe over to the next year; even with the Chicago one I still feel that there is so much more I can do with it and I plan to look at it further. In my proposal I also said that I wanted to finish a project I started in the 1st year which was my personal design of the London Underground map, I was not able to do so over this term due to time management but that project is not one that I am going to give up on.
