Some kids would give anything

to go to school.

Thanks to the First State School at Wilmington Hospital, chronically ill youngsters can get a quality education even as they receive the medical treatment they need. The rst school of its kind in the U.S., it’s a collaboration between Christiana Care and the Delaware Dept. of Education through the Red Clay School District. Playhouse Friends –

Welcome back to The Playhouse on Rodney Square for the first production of a New Year!

We have a glittery, lyrical treat for you today with Rodgers + Hammerstein’s fairy tale

musical, Cinderella.

We hope you have enjoyed the season thus far, and we look forward to having you back

for several more excellent productions yet this spring. After Cinderella, we still have the

20th Anniversary production of Riverdance and two Tony Award winners: Pippin and Once.

But I want to take a moment to mention two other important opportunities coming up

this spring.

On June 10th, we will host the first-ever special event to celebrate (and benefit) The

Playhouse as the longest-running Broadway series in the country, and it will feature the

legendary Broadway song-and-dance man Ben Vereen. Ben won a Tony, by the way, for his

performance in the original production of Pippin. Tickets are now on sale online or at the

box office.

And, sometime in the next few weeks, we will be announcing the 2017-18 season of

Broadway in Wilmington. We have worked hard to address the patron feedback we’ve

gotten on the current season, and the coming schedule will be both more manageable in

number and also better spaced through the calendar. If you haven’t already received an

invitation to the launch party, one will be coming to you very soon.

Thanks, as always, for your ongoing support of this toe-tapping part of the Wilmington

cultural landscape!

RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN (Music, Lyrics & Original Book). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in the early ’40s to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Oklahoma! (1943), the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’ sophisticated style of musical comedy (which he had perfected in a 25-year partnership with lyricist Lorenz Hart) with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta (conceived in collaboration with such composers as Sigmund Romberg, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Jerome Kern). Over the next 16 years, R&H wrote eight more Broadway musicals: Carousel, Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music. They wrote one movie musical, State Fair, subsequently adapted to the stage, and one for television, “Cinderella.” First broadcast live with Julie Andrews in 1957, remade with Lesley Ann Warren (1965), and again with Whitney Houston and Brandy (1997), R&H’s Cinderella made her Broadway debut in 2013.
