Bulbs 2011What is a bulb? For the gardener, this term generally includes all plants with lumpy rootstocks. Mature plants can usually be transplanted safely a few days after they are lifted. Such plants would include genuine bulbs such as Ifafa lilies (Cyrtanthus mackenii); plants with rhizomes such as the iris Dietes grandiflora - see under Grass-like plants; tuberous plants such as the arum lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) and plants with corms such as Crocosmia aurea. Bulbs contribute striking forms and the seasonal excitement of delicately perfect, glistening flowers to a planting. Many local bulbs have interesting medicinal properties.

Climbers 2011You can use climbers to great effect if you want to attract wildlife to an urban garden. Birds covet fruit or nectar from the flowers of different climbers. Several have leaves which caterpillars enjoy. The caterpillars in turn attract more birds. Thick climbers and scramblers provide good nesting sites for birds. The screening and draping qualities of climbers make them essential features of a wild and secluded garden. Plant them close together so that they intertwine, or train them up trees. (Keep them under control if they climb your favourite trees, however.) Bring down old branches or unsightly alien trees by letting a robust climber run rampant over them.

Ground covers 2011Ground covers (for both sunny and shady areas) are crucial garden features which need little maintenance if planted in an appropriate position. They hold the soil and keep it moist as well as keeping weeds under control. They can provide sundrenched carpets and banks of colour, or soft forest-floor effects. Try a scrambling Plectranthus on a shady bank, or plan for breathtaking cascades of

Trees 2011

Since trees, with shrubs, provide a framework for the rest of the plants in your garden, and provide homes and food sources for birds and other wildlife, they need to be carefully selected and placed.  When selecting trees consider the size of your garden and whether you want it to be shady or more open. Remember that a number of indigenous trees are very fast-growing ‘pioneer’ species and will create shady areas even before you expected this to happen. You can obtain beautiful effects by planting different flowering trees next to one another. Also, there is much good advice available on beautiful locally indigenous trees that can replace any ‘invader’ trees in your garden.
