A SMALL STEP

TOWARDS...

INCREDIBLE INDIA

Step 1 : Feel

Of the many problems in India, public health and sanitation is a

major concern. India is hosting the Common Wealth Games and is acting

as host to many tourists. The image we present of our self is the image

they carry back home.

We observed that we tend to keep only our place clean and the

public place is of nobody's concern. We leave it to the

administration to do the needful.

We started with our school campus which was neatly maintained.

The immediate public space outside the school was an eyesore.

Private vans, rickshaw, cars, bikes are parked haphazardly causing

traffic congestion.

Roadside vendors lure the students and others with their mouth

watering products albeit unhygienic and unhealthy products like

candy, ice candy, cool drinks, parota etc.

The whole place is littered with polythene covers, wrappers, bottles

etc.

The drivers of the private vans were observed to be smoking

cigarettes and spitting here and there.

Because of the plastic garbage, during rain water gets accumulated

to form puddles. Water stagnation in turn becomes breeding ground

for pathogens and mosquitoes leading to diseases like malaria,

chikungunia, dengue,TB, typhoid, cholera, diarrhea

Children exposed to such high risk are more prone to infection.

Oh God! Is this the condition of our school kids outside the

campus?

Step 2 : Imagine

We realized that imparting knowledge about the diseases and the

prevention of the same will promote a healthy change.

The school administration should also involve in making the

surroundings spic and span.

The road side vendors are unaware of the health and sanitation.

Parents encourage the kids to indulge with money.

Health education is not properly imbibed in the adults.

Step 3: Action

We spoke to the Panchayat President of the area about the menace

and convinced her to place dustbins at appropriate locations.

Ensure that the dustbins are emptied at regular intervals.

Students spoke to the van drivers about the importance of

sanitation and hygiene. A procession by the students holding

placards about health and hygiene was taken.

Van drivers are convinced that change is for good for health (quit

smoking).

General public are encouraged to throw litters in the dustbins

provided.

Road side vendors are encouraged to imbibe healthy and hygienic

practices in the preparation of the edibles.

Action taken.... Way Forward....

A small change in outlook, small change in our habits and practices

go a long way to make world a better place to live. Our effort in making

that small change began with our school surroundings and the efforts are

bearing fruits. We will ensure that the change is sustained. Let us all join

our hands and pledge to make our schools..incredible schools, our society

incredible...our nation...Incredible India.

Acknowledgment :

We are thankful to the opportunity extended to us by means of this

project. We are thankful to the school management, Principal Mrs. Daya

Samuel and the Compartment Head Mrs. Bhavany Vijayan for their able

guidance and encouragement. The project would not have been

successful but for the Panchayat President Mrs. Karuthamma who believed

in us.
