When we got to know about the Design For Change Campaign we all sat together during our “CIRCLE TIME”. We came up with various ideas.
ROAD CONDITIONS
EDUCATING THE LESS PRIVILEDGED
THINKING BRAINS
ILL-EFFECTS OF PLASTIC
Make people aware of the harmful effects of plastic bags.
Out of these we chose to work on the ill-Effects Of Plastics because we wanted to work towards a clean and safe environment. Most of us knew how to make paper bags.
OUR DECISION
So we unanimously agreed upon:-
Distributing paper bags to the neighbouring shopkeepers.
We decided to meet the shopkeeper in our neighbourhood to understand the problem and design a solution. We prepared a questionnaire. Our questions included :-
Why do you use plastic bags instead of paper bags ?
Do you know about the harmful effects of plastic bags ?
Why do you think plastic bags are better than paper bags ?
PREPARATION AND MARKET SURVEY
RESPONSE
The response that we got from shopkeepers was surprising….
We learnt that..
Shopkeepers are aware of the ill-effects of plastic on the environment.
Customers insist on plastic bags.
Both customer and shopkeeper find plastic bags more durable as paper bags tear easily and are difficult to carry.
Sometimes customers threaten to go to other shops which provide plastic bags.
Based on our market survey we realized that we have to educate the customer and the solution is in using paper bags and cloth bags together.
WORKING TOGETHER
One parent very enthusiastically volunteered to provide cloth bags from his factory.
Posters and Pamphlets for distribution, to make the people aware of the ill-effects of using plastic bags.
Paper bags for the shopkeepers.
Cloth bags for the customers.
We started to work on the following areas:
So we started making paper bags from old newspapers. It was a huge task as we had to make lot of paper bags. We felt we are living in a paper bag factory!
WORKING TOGETHER
WORKING TOGETHER
We also made notices and posters.
On Friday, 1st October 2010 ,14 of us went to the South City-1 market and handed over paper bags. Shopkeepers were delighted to receive the paper bags and promised to use them.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
We put up posters and notices in and around the shops.
Some of us went to the neighbouring residential areas and distributed cloth bags.
MAKING IT HAPPEN
MAKING IT HAPPEN
During this distribution of cloth bag we realized that most of the shopping is not done by the house owner but it is the helper who goes to the market. Therefore we distributed cloth bags to them also.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Shopkeepers are aware of the damage to the environment caused by the use of plastic bags.
Shopkeepers had proactively agreed to use paper bags.
It is the customers who demand plastic bags.
The solution is not just promoting the use of paper bags.
Cloth bags together with paper bags is the answer to plastic bags.
Customers at all the level need to be made aware of the use of paper bags and cloth bags.
`
Paper bags are cheaper for the shopkeepers. By using plastic bags on an average they lose out . 200 per month.
