CLASS PLACEMENTS 2018/2019

The planning process for the 2018-2019 classes is underway. When we create our new classes, we

take into account a number of variables:

1. Balanced number and gender of students. We need to balance classes as much as possible

to ensure an equitable distribution of students. In particular, we are bound to the Ministry

guidelines for class size, which may include combined grades.

2. Balance of ability, interests and talents. A diverse class of students with different strengths,

talents and abilities will help create well-rounded groups of students who will learn well

together.

3. Consideration to students with Special Needs. If we have students who have special

academic, physical or social needs we need to ensure that they are properly supported. This

may depend upon access to a teaching assistant.

4. Social blending. What is the best cluster of students to effectively and efficiently learn? This

should not be viewed as groupings of friends.

5. Parental input regarding the learning needs of children. Written input from parents is

welcomed with regards to the specific learning styles and needs of their children. For

example, if a child loves to build things and responds well to active, hands-on lessons, we

would love to know that.

As you can see from this list there are many factors that affect student placement. Parental input is

one of them. We will seriously consider all information given by parents and as a school we will

do our best to accommodate needs, but no definitive promises can be made. Please submit any

parental input in writing by Monday, May 7th, 2018. Balanced classes make better learning

environments for students and for the teacher. Please do not indicate any individual teacher’s

name.

PLOGGING!

Plogging...3E jogs in the new community garden and then picks up garbage in The Roots garden and schoolyard.

Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter (Swedish: plocka upp). It started as an organised activity in Sweden around 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018, following

increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running. (source: www.wikipedia.org)

DAY OF PINK Article by Kathryn, grade 4

Have you ever wondered how it feels to get bullied? Do you know the story of Day of Pink? No? Then I will tell you. Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion. On April 11, students at Corsair PS wore pink to demonstrate our commitment to equity and inclusion.

FASTING DURING THE MONTH OF RAMADAN

Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. During this month, Muslims fast from dusk until dawn. As it is an important time for some in our Corsair community, we understand that some students may also be fasting in the upcoming month. Parents are invited to contact the office to discuss the supports needed for their children during this time at 905-279-1511.

Corsair Vikings Volleyball

On April 5th, Corsair held it's 4th annual Volleyball Tournament. Kenollie and Mineola each brought 2 girls teams and 1 boys team. Students practiced their volleyball skills as a team while supporting and encouraging their teams during their matches.

Corsair Birdhouses—1J

Our class birdhouse is called #HomeTweetHome as we decided it would be funny to base it on a Twitter theme. It was made using a combination of 15 different types of recycled wood, plastic, fabric, rubber and metal objects. This project tied in perfectly with our objects, materials and structures

unit for science. We read the books, “The Most Magnificent Thing” and “Rosie Revere, Engineer” and looked at pictures of houses to explore inquiry, creativity and engineering prior to designing our birdhouse. We discussed how we would need to make the birdhouse as strong, lightweight and durable as possible. We discussed what kinds of materials we would need to ensure it will withstand different weather conditions such as rain and wind. Students brought recyclables from home and we collected some recyclables from school. Students worked in groups to design and plan for our birdhouse.

Grade 1 Playgrounds Mme Dusto's 1J students had fun designing and constructing their own playgrounds using recycled materials for our objects, materials and structures science unit. We worked in pairs or on our own to engineer strong, stable and functional structures by transforming and incorporating a variety of recycled materials to make our playgrounds. We then tested our playgrounds out with small characters from home and shared our projects with our reading buddies in grade 2.

GRADE 4 PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES

Students explored Canada territories and provinces through research and classroom activities. Students chose a part of Canada they wanted to showcase. Some explored animal habitats and/or special events that happen in their provinces and territories. Using a shoe box students explored and used their imagination to create their scenes!

Earth Rangers is a Canadian environmental education and the goal of the organization is to educate children and their families about biodiversity, inspire them to adopt sustainable behaviors, and empower them to become directly involved in protecting animals and their habitats. Earth Rangers currently has more than 150,000 members across Canada and visits more than 800 elementary schools every year with a live animal show.

There are currently over 150,000 Earth Rangers all around Canada. 543 members in the North, 37,281 members in the Western Canada, 9,934 members in the Prairies, 75,015 members in Ontario and 12,394 members in the Eastern Canada.

CORSAIR BOOK FAIR

The Book Fair is underway in the library! Until May 8th, books will be on display for students to preview and purchase. Cash, debit and credit cards are welcome.

We are looking to hire lunchroom supervisors to work on an “as needed” basis to help supervise students during our nutrition breaks.

Nutrition Break timings are from 11:35 am- 12:15 pm and 1:35 pm—2:15 pm.

Interested applicants should drop off their resumé at the office, to the attention of Mrs. Hassanwalia, the Vice Principal.

FROM YOUR SCHOOL COUNCIL… READ-A-THON RESULTS AND CHARACTER COSTUME DAY! The Read-A-Thon results are in.

In February our students were invited to participate in our Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Corsair students raised an incredible $6,843 and read for an amazing 253,002 minutes.

On May 10th please come to school dressed as your favourite character. (No weapons or masks please.) All students who participated will receive a token of thanks from the School Council. There will be an assembly to see which classes earned a Lego Robotics presentation and which classes earned a party. We will also hold the Grand Prize Draw to find out who will be the “Principal for the Day”. Good Luck to everyone who earned a ballot.

APRIL 23, 2018 GAMES 4 LEARNING

On Monday April 23, families had the chance to come into their child’s classroom and learn the fun ways in which students practice their skills in a variety of subjects, including Math and French. We had such a great turnout. Take a look!

APRIL 24, 2018 Roland Bibeau Concert

Roland Bibeau has been writing and performing English music for children and their families for the past 20 years. To make a long story short, one day he met singer song-writer Étienne, started using the French language he had learned as a child and now puts on French concerts with the help and guidance of his new friend, Étienne.

Students enjoyed his concert and some Corsair students even had a chance to go up to the front and participate! What a great way for students to practice their French in an authentic way!

APRIL 25, 2018

This workshop explored systems that parents could use to help their children at home. Strategies included the underlying language of mathematics and connections between various math concepts. Parents worked through problem solving questions and left with concrete strategies to better meet the needs of their children at home. They also had tons of fun in the team “rally” - a fun yet competitive way to practice their math skills!

OUTDOOR EDUCATION GRANT

Grade one outdoor agility challenge Milt Ottey - OT Fitness Educational Service May 7 morning 9:30-11:30

The OT Fitness Team will provide 10 stations using some of the exciting relays from our Fun in Athletics pro-

grams. The Agility Challenge is a Core Skills development program whose design is based on the way chil-

dren play in order to teach or improve the basic necessary skills required for active living.

Bradley Museum Play Day Fun Grades 2-5 - May 9-June 7

Students learn the importance of imagination and cooperation as they play fun traditional games from

the 1800's-1900's. Teamwork will be the key to success as they churn homemade ice cream, play games

of skill and enjoy handmade toys. Workshop is available in French. Curriculum connections Social Studies

and Physical Education. 2-hour workshop. 9:30-12:15

RAINBOW HEALTH TEAM

Did you know that Rainbow Health Team started an event called Fruity Friday? It is a day when staff and

students bring a fruit or vegetable for snack during nutrition breaks. Based on our survey 91% of grade one

and two students want to eat more fruits and vegetables.

In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month. Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians.
