There is no General Meeting in December Instead SDMG will participate in the two-day celebration of Christmas on the Prado and host an Open House All of Balboa Park will welcome visitors to a festive holiday celebration with singers dancers and holiday foods Many of the parkrsquos Museums will stay open late and will offer free admission after 500pm

THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US and with that San Diego Mineral amp Gem Society has two majorevents this month December Nights ndash formally known as Christmas on the Prado ndash is our first

event and this is basically for the public Jim Parrish Bob Hancock and Lois Lukasky and a band of SDMG elves will keep our building open to the public during the two nights of December 2nd amp 3rd There are sign-up sheets for the various jobs that need to be done Visit the SDMG website for more details at httpwwwsdmgorgsdmg-publicevents2016december-nights

The other event in December is our Annual Christmas Potluck amp Ornament Contest on December 19th It will be held in Room 101 Casa del Prado (across from the west side of the Natural History Museum Building) Chaired this year by SDMG instructor Rocio Bergum she has successfully run the last few holiday Potlucks Please contact her to assist at rociosdmgorg There will be information posted at the SDMG building See pg4 for details

There will not be a Board Meeting or General Meeting in December Yours truly presented the program at the November meeting A small band of dedicated SDMG members sloshed through rain winds the dark of night and traffic to attend The group enjoyed the slides of the recent AmericanNorthwest Show and Convention which was held in Albany Oregon this past summer Pictures courtesy of John Martin featured some of the famous Northwest agates and jaspers I brought slices of many of the items from my personal collection The phone cameras came out and pictures of the items were taken for comparison at the upcoming Quartzsite extravaganza ndash especially the Bruneau Jasper

The General Meeting in October was a special demonstration presented by the Southwest Prospectors and Miners Association (SPMA) Due to stormy weather only 20 brave souls attended but their effort was rewarded with a really entertaining program SPMA President Brian Turner and Treasurer Brian Winters showed us how to pan for gold Because the audience was small we were able to get around the panning table and watch up close and personal how gold is really panned Many of us took the chance bought a gold pack and these extraordinary people taught us how to extract the gold from the sand and then packed the gold into small gold vials It was such fun that wersquore going to do it annually

WE HAD A GREAT TIME at the Gem Diego Show Several Juniors sold at our

selling booth and helped set up and take down Thank you so much to everyone who helped out at the show and donated items for the Juniors to sell You helped make it a great success this year

The 2nd and 3rd of December is Balboa Parkrsquos December Nights (Christmas on the Prado) Balboa Park will be decorated and open to the public Visitors will get a special opportunity to visit the museums and artistsrsquo studios in Spanish Village which will be open in the evenings There will be displays international food courts and holiday lights and cheer It is a great event for the whole family

At SDMGrsquos Open House there will be classes and demonstrations on Friday the 2nd starting at noon and on Saturday starting at 1000am The Juniors will have a Selling Table If you have donations for them to sell contact me ASAP

Please note that the regular Saturday Junior class will not be held on December 3rd Parking can be a challenge due to all the visitors so you may have to look for parking near the Zoo

Monday December 19th will be SDMGrsquos Christmas Potluck It starts at 500pm and dinner will be served at 600pm There will be a Silent Auction Door Prizes and special prizes for Christmas Decorations and a great feast Juniors and their parents are encouraged to participate It will be a fun time Hope to see you all there See details on pg 4

THANKS TO THE MANY PEOPLE who were involved in putting on the 2016 Gem Diego Show It was a great success both in terms of club member and

dealer participation and in terms of items sold through the club booth The club booth sales exceeded previous years records quite substantially The many volunteers whom we call ldquoThe Cast of Thousandsrdquo were directly responsible for making everything happen The many individuals who signed up to work during show set-up and show breakdown members who exhibited members who demonstrated and members who worked the show worked security made sales sold door prize tickets and finally the members who preformed the myriad jobs necessary for the show are the key to our success

Looking around during show set up and breakdown I saw workers busy everywhere doing all of the various and sundry jobs necessary to make it all happen We had our lifters and loaders pushers and pullers table skirters and tapers all working in unison and on schedule to ready the exhibit case assembly and wiring

During the show our demonstrators worked at their stations talking with visitors explaining to them how we perform our various forms of lapidary stone cutting sphere making rock carving chaffing and repousse or gem identification or wire wrapping We had a resident geologist on hand to identify strange minerals and our interactive junior science-geology

A BIG thank you to Garry Cannon for taking over coordinating the dealers This year they attracted lots of visitors with great values on a terrific range and variety of minerals gems jewelry and gem-mineral themed gifts Lapidary and jewelry artists found a trove of faceting carving and cabbing rough and also tools and books Heaps of thanks to our loyal Gem and Mineral Dealers who make Gem Diego the best gem and mineral show in San Diego

The Jaguar TrophyThis award is presented by the Society President to the SDMG member who enters the most beautiful case of their own work at the Gem Diego Show The award was conceived by Ron Willis our English member after he visited our show in 1987 He made the trophy for using English walnut and marble The winner for 2016 was Jackie Leverone for her display case of chased metalwork and repousseacute

FIFTY-ONE CLUBS WERE REPRESENTED at the Fall business meeting of the California

Federation of Mineralogical Societies Inc A new slate of officers was introduced They will officially take their posts on January 1 2017 The new officers are Margaret Kolaczyk President Marcia Goetz Secretary Jennifer Haley 1st Vice President Al Bolshazy Treasurer and Tony Fender 2nd Vice President Look for a full report on the Fall meeting in the January issue of the CFMS newsletter Below are some highlights

Kudos to outgoing president John Martin who has worked tirelessly on behalf of CFMS especially on public lands access issues Among his last official duties John appointed Mike Hunerlach Chairman of PLAC-Central noting that it is the first time in many years that all California regional committee chairmanships have been filled Mike is going to be a tremendous asset to the Rockhound community As a geologist with more than 35-yearsrsquo experience working

for the Forest Service and BLM he helped write the book ndash literally ndash on land use administration and he has testified before congressional committees on public lands use policy His appointment could not be more timely He will be an effective rockhound advocate as Californians see sweeping land use amendments being implemented under DRECP guidelines and the Planning 20 initiative currently being drafted in Washington DC

The Ventura Gem amp Mineral Society (VGMS) will be hosting the joint AFMSndashCFMS Show and Convention June 9ndash11 2017 The theme is ldquoVentura Rocks the Nationrdquo and that is not an understatement Led by VGMS President and Show Chair Diane Cook the club is revved up and preparing to put on a really great show Ventura club members at the Visalia meeting put on a wildly entertaining karaoke performance of the Beach Boys ldquoSurfinrsquo USArdquo to get everyone in the mood and stoke expectations for a memorable show at the Ventura Fairgrounds

SDMG is contemplating arranging a day-long caravan by train for our members Itrsquos a pretty ride along the coast and fairgoers can avoid the traffic and parking hassles by going AmTrak The CFMS show come to a Southern California venue only once every seven years ndash another reason the 2017 show is not to be missed

Snapshot of VGMSThe Ventura Club is nothing if not outgoing President Diane Cook leads a very active board and warm community of members The club sponsors many field trips that welcome members of other CFMS-affilated clubs (including SDMG)

Jim Brace-Thompson seems to be involved in everything He chairs Education and Community Outreach with a big emphasis placed on youth engagement Just this year VGMS created the Pebble Pup Club and its growing by leaps and bounds Jim has put out the word that he would like to profile enthusiastic and precocious Pups in other clubs to encourage budding geologists mineralogists and rockhounds Get a message to Jim at infovgmsorg

VGMS editor Angela Brown produces a first-rate bulletin Rockhound Rambling which unfailingly features articles on every topic to appeal to wide-ranging interests

Therersquos so much more to VGMS ndash wersquove barely scratched the touchstone Check it out ndash therersquos always a lot of exciting things going on

Lisbet Thoresen CFMS Chair PLACndashSouth and public lands representative of SDMG made a presentation at the Visalia meeting on the Mojave Trails National Monument (NFNM) She explained that SDMG and CFMS is preparing a joint comment letter on the Management Plan and she invited CFMS-affiliate clubs and other non-profits educational and professional organizations to sign onto the letter when the final draft is ready (eta late February 2017) Community participation will lend authority to the importance we attach to preserving Rockhounding in the new national monument

Lisbet advised the audience members that she would reach out to them by late February 2017 and would ask each club representative to take the final draft comment letter to their boards for sign-on approval After the presentation Shirley Leeson asked for a show of hands committing to signing the letter The presentationcomment letter got an overwhelming show of support but President-elect Margaret Kolaczyk said ldquoGet a picturerdquo so everyone would be held to account

Lisbet distributed a printed flyer that lists the simple three-step call-to-action on how Rockhounds can help her help them Itrsquos available in PDF format online at

Finally Lisbetrsquos talk featured a brief discussion about the National Monument designation in general and its application to Mojave Trails specifically Many rockhounds reflexively criticize the designation but given the alternative ndash proliferation of utility-scale renewable energy projects in Californiarsquos deserts ndash it may be the only way to preserve Rockhounding on public lands which otherwise may be vulnerable to development Lisbetrsquos presentation is available on the SDMG website at

Meet McDonaldrsquos in Acton at the Crown Valley exit on the north side of the 14 Freeway Come early if you wish and have breakfast From here the group will caravan to Agate Valley

Take the 405 Freeway north to the 5 Freeway Go north on it to the 14 Freeway and go north From here drive about 24 miles to Crown Valley Rd and exit At the bottom of the offramp turn left and go under the freeway McDonaldrsquos will be on your right From here we will caravan to the site

If you plan on going you must let me know ahead of time

We will be traveling thru a sandy wash so a 44 is a must Gas and food are available in Barstow

THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US and with that San Diego Mineral amp Gem Society has two majorevents this month December Nights ndash formally known as Christmas on the Prado ndash is our first

There will not be a Board Meeting or General Meeting in December Yours truly presented the program at the November meeting A small band of dedicated SDMG members sloshed through rain winds the dark of night and traffic to attend The group enjoyed the slides of the recent AmericanNorthwest Show and Convention which was held in Albany Oregon this past summer Pictures courtesy of John Martin featured some of the famous Northwest agates and jaspers I brought slices of many of the items from my personal collection The phone cameras came out and pictures of the items were taken for comparison at the upcoming Quartzsite extravaganza ndash especially the Bruneau Jasper
