Inaugural 41 Club NSSW

From the President’s Office A very Happy New Year to you all from the office of your National President. I hope you all have a happy and healthy 2017. It is amazing to think that I have only 16 weeks left until the AGM. I am really enjoy-ing all the club visits, but have room in my diary to visit quite a few more before my time is up. If your club has not been visited by a recent National President, please invite me. No matter where you are or how many members you have — just invite me and I will come — diary allowing.

I am recovering quite well from my broken pelvis and, although I have some titanium inside me, the soreness is slowly (too slowly) going away. I can drive, swim and walk but have not yet been out cycling! Thanks to everyone who has sent me good wishes.

Since my last article, I have laid a wreath at the Cenotaph, which was very moving and a complete privilege. I have seen an entertainer with Ringwood,

2017 Classic Car and Classic Motorcycle Rallies

We're delighted to announce the date and venue for the 2017 Classic Car and Motor Cycle Rally. The date is Friday 2nd June until Sunday 4th June 2017 and the event will be based at The Craiglands Hotel, Cowpasture Road, Ilkley, West York-shire, LS29 8RQ. Telephone 01943 430001.

The Craiglands Hotel was built in 1859 and was one of the finest situated purpose-built hydropathic establishments in the country. Originally served by coach transport, the coming of the railway to Ilkley in 1865 put the town on the map as a premier Spa and Hydrotherapy location allowing the hotel to flourish. The Craiglands today retains much of it's former beauty but has been updated with modern facilities and is ideal for our event with its lovely grounds and ample parking.

As in previous years you need to book and pay for your own accommodation directly with the hotel via our contact there, Claire Midgley. Claire can be contacted on the hotel tele-phone number shown above (01943 430001). We have negotiated a special rate of £160 for two nights Bed and Breakfast for the Friday and Saturday night so be sure to mention 41 Club when you book.

Additional nights are available but please discuss these with the hotel on booking. A Rally Dinner will be held on the Satur-day night at the hotel and the cost of this will be extra. As this is a busy hotel the rooms are available on a first come first served basis and will only be held for us until the 31st March 2017 so please book now to avoid disappointment.

Some very picturesque routes have been planned already and we're sure everyone will be delighted with both the hotel and the driving and riding we have in store for you around this beautiful county.

Entry Forms for the Classic Rally will be available next month but in the meantime, book your hotel now ready for a great weekend. There will also be details of the Rally available soon on the 41 Club Website so keep checking as Entry Forms will be available to download online.

To encourage more motorcycles to attend there will be simul-taneous events this year sharing the same hotel and facilities but with slightly different routes. Entries for The Classic Car Rally will be handled by Ray Hill and for The Classic Motor Cycle Rally by Terry Cooper.

Remember, "Classic" or "Cherished" in 41 Club terms means anything that you like to drive or ride and think others may be interested in seeing and talking to you about. Last year, we had vehicles dating from 1949 up to a nearly new Porsche 911 and a customised VW Camper Van. In other words we welcome all makes, models and years of cars and motor cycles, so come and join us for a great weekend of fun and "petrolhead fellowship" in the June sunshine.

Yours in Continued Friendship, The Classic Rally Team.

30th Christmas at the Lamb The Lamb Tavern in London’s Leaden-hall Market has been the venue for monthly Round Table Family lunchtime meetings since March 1986. The venture started as a drop-in meeting place for members of 41 Club and Round Table but, since the advent of the wider “Round Table Family” that also includes Ladies’ Circle and Tan-gent, Ladies have been more than welcome to attend.

December 14th 2016 marked the 30th Christmas meeting at the Lamb that was organised by David Leon of London Old Tablers’ Society (LOTS), the second ever Ex-Tablers’ Club and one of the founder members of our Association. In the evening after the lunch-eon, David had this to say:

I started planning the event on 19/8 (it’s never to early for Christ-mas). Over 600 emails later and here we all are (66 of us), seated, fed and watered.

As you are aware, we first met in March 1986. 356 meetings later and attended by over 4400 of the RT Family we are here today. Our average attendance during this time is 12, which is not bad seeing

as we are not an actual Club. There are 43 different Clubs represented here today (another record).

Over one third of you here today were 'Lamb Virgins'. Welcome and let me know what you think and of course please come again. The other two thirds are regulars. My thanks to you for your continued support and of course making it the success it is today.

Another statistic. Over one third of you are members of Tangent. Again, my thanks.

I stress every year my appreciation for members of our National Council who attend and by doing so give their seal of approval. I refer in particular to Barry Durman, our 41 Club National President, and to Paula Farnfield. the National President of Tangent.

My main aim for next year is to get support for this event from Round Table and Ladies Circle. So any ideas would be welcome!

Don't forget, it is our 31st Anniversary on 8/3/17. See you all there!

David Leon

Rachel and I also gate-crashed Northampton Nene’s Christmas Tea to surprise my JOGLE driver Ken Banfield. Gotcha!

Donations to Shelter have been coming in well and just before Christmas we passed the £15,000 mark, so thanks to all clubs and members who have helped those “less fortunate” than ourselves.

I attended the Shelter 50th Anniversary Shelter Stars event at St Martin in the Fields Church in London. This was a Carol Service with readings from people who had been helped by Shelter; it was very moving. I still intend to finish my JOGLE cycle by pedalling from Bodmin to Lands End on Saturday 1st April (I know, I know!). If anyone would like to join me, please put the date in your diary and wait for hotel details, which I will publish in due course.

The business of 41 Club pushes ahead and we have to start

preparations for the AGM shortly. Nominations for positions are now open. It is not all fun and games being National President, there is some difficult business as well — perhaps unsurprising when you have 16195 members, 777 clubs and 30 strong-willed guys on Nation-al Council. An organisation of this size does not run itself, let’s just say that.

Anyway, once more, good wishes to you all for 2017.

Have fun in your 41 Club and remember to book in and support event organisers.

Yours in Continued Friendship,

Barry Durman National President 2016—2017

National Photographic and Press Competitions 2017 The National Photographic Competition kicked off in October!

As they were last year, entries will be published on line when voting opens, and the voting itself will also be on line so that as many of you as possible can cast your votes, not just those attending National Conference.

The winner shall be announced at the AGM in Blackpool and your favourite photos will appear in the charity calendar, profits from which will go to future National President Dave Campbell’s nominated charity.

Please send your entries to me at [email protected]. Bear in mind that the photos, if winners, will be printed slightly larger than A4 and in landscape mode except for the front cover. Your entries therefore have to be of sufficient resolu-tion. As a rule of thumb, a JPEG file that is at least 2.0 to 2.5 MB in size should do the trick but bigger is better in this case. If you’d rather send me a link to the picture in your DropBox, OneDrive, Google Drive or other then that’s fine too.

The competition rules are the same as last year:

Each photograph must be the work of the person enter-ing it and entries are limited to four per member.

Entry is only available to members who can be verified on the CAS database.

Entries are to be submitted electronically to [email protected]

All entries must include the name and club of the pho-tographer and a title.

Photographs must not have been entered into any other competition.

The closing date for entries is Tuesday February 28th 2017.

The photographer grants permission for 41 Club to use the photographs for charitable fund-raising activities.

Parallel to this we also have the David Smith Trophy, which is awarded to the club with the best newsletter. Leicester St. Martins 41 Club holds the title currently, so if you would like to have a go at taking it away from them, just add me to your distribution list! The aesthetic of your newsletter and the clarity of its presentation as well as the level of information that will be of interest not only to 41 Club members but also to individuals who are not (yet!) members are all important.

Finally, we also have the David Hewitt Trophy, which goes to the club with the best website. Any club member can nomi-nate his club’s website. Simply let me have its URL and the name of the member responsible for it.

I await your entries and nominations!

Well Done Camberley 41 Club! Camberley 41 Club Christmas Charity Collection

https://www.facebook.com/Camberley41

Between December 6th and December 23rd 2016, the Camberley 41 Club Christmas Float has toured the streets of Camberley and Frimley and appeared at Longacres, Sains-bury’s Watchmoor Park, Waitrose at Frimley and Bagshot, and at Tesco’s and Marks and Spencer at The Meadows.

Thousands of local children have been thrilled and excited to see and chat with Santa. Their parents and many, many more adults have generously contributed to our collection and in total over £8000 has been raised for four local charities.

In equal share, the recipients of this money will be Looking Ahead, Surrey Young Carers, Parity for Disability and HEART (Harry and Ed’s Aspiration Raising Trust).

THANK YOU to all the stores for hosting us, and THANK YOU to everyone in the Surrey Heath Community who donated.

Teenage Cancer Trust — “Top To Toe” update The Teenage Cancer Trust's (TCT) "Top to Toe" walk from Glasgow to London between April and July 2017 is on track and we're looking forward to giving them our support.

The outline details of the walk and the part we've agreed to play in it are listed below but I've added an update this month with details on the sections of the route I was missing last month.

The walk will start from The TCT Centre at The Queen Eliza-beth University Hospital, Glasgow on Monday 17th April and will follow a 45 mile route to Edinburgh.

To remind you, our part in the event is to organise the start and finish on each day’s walk, issue outline route sheets, Tee Shirts, water for the walkers, have a container to collect donations and set up a banner to mark the start and then to move this on to the finish of the leg (all equipment and hand outs, other than any local information that we may need to issue, will be provided by the TCT). There will be a "Baton" that will be carried down the country and handed over daily to be taken on the walk. This may need to be looked after by 41 Club overnight and then handed on in the morning.

Moving on to the other stages, the walk will start again from Edinburgh on Thursday April 20th and that stage will finish in Newcastle on Wednesday 26th April taking seven days to complete that section. I'm still waiting for details of this route but promise to publish them as soon as I have them.

The next two stages from Newcastle to Manchester, via Hull and Leeds are being organised by the TCT themselves so we will not be needed there. This is also the case for the next stage from Manchester to Liverpool ending at Alderhay Chil-dren's Hospital.

We pick up helping again on stage five, which starts from Alderhay Children's Hospital on Sunday 13th May and finishes at Sheffield on Friday 19th May, a distance of 92 miles. The outline route is Childwell to Trans Pennine Trail, Hale, Widnes, Heatley, Didsbury, Broadbottom, Hadfield, following the Snake Pass to Ladybower Reservoir and then to Sheffield on the A57.

Stage six is from Sheffield to Nottingham, a total of 54 miles, and runs from Saturday 20th May to Monday 22nd. The route is as follows: starting at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital the walk follows minor roads to Hasland, 15 miles. Day 2 is from Hasland via the Five Pits Trail to Tibshelf and then on to Bagthorpe, another 15 miles. Day 3 is from Bagthorpe again on roads to finish at the Queen's Medical Centre in Notting-ham, just 10 miles.

Stage seven is from Nottingham to Leicester, 36 miles on Tuesday May 23rd and Wednesday 24th and I now have the route for this section. Starting at the Queen's Centre the walk will follow the Trent and Mersey Canal to Long Eaton. Then it will turn south on to the Grand Union Canal to Loughborough, about 20 miles. The following day is the 14 miles into Leices-ter on the Tow Path of the Grand Union with the final street walk to the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Stage eight is from Leicester to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, a distance of 70 miles, and this runs on Thursday May 25th and Monday 29th. This route is also finalised and starts from Leicester Royal Infirmary on day 1 on minor roads to Oakham and then on to the finish at Braunston-in-Rutland,

about 17 miles. Day 2 is from Oakham using Hereward's Way to Stamford, 17 miles. Day 3 continues on Hereward's Way following the river Nene to Peterborough, 17 miles. Day 4 is 15 miles from Peterborough to Ramsey on minor roads and day 5 heads south on paths and minor roads to finish at St Ives, 15 miles. Day 6 is from

St Ives on the Cambridge Guided Busway to the centre of Cambridge to Addenbrooke's Hospital another 17 miles.

Stage nine will start at Addenbrooke's on Tuesday May 30th and will finish at Birmingham's Children's Hospital on Monday June 5th, a total of 170 miles. The route is more detailed on this leg but the main stops may be Bourn, St Neots, Bilsworth, Norton Junction, Kingswood and onto the BCH.

Stage ten is from the BCH in Birmingham to Cardiff, a total of 152 miles starting on Tuesday 6th June, running until Wednesday 14th. The outline route, where possible, will be using Canals again and is as follows: BCH to Queen Eliza-beth's Hospital, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Kings Norton Junction, (Worcester & Birm Canal), Worcester Diglis Basin, Gloucester Docks, Chaxhill, Chepstow, Newport via Welsh Coastal Path to Cardiff.

Stage eleven will start at Cardiff University Hospital on Thurs-day 15th June and finish in Bristol on Sunday 18th, a total of 50 miles. The outline route is a retrace of some of the previ-ous route on the WCP to Chepstow then over the Old Severn Bridge to Aust and a walk up the Severn Estuary Path into Bristol.

Stage twelve starts at Bristol Children's Hospital on Monday 19th June and finishes at Southampton on Friday 23rd, a total of 75 miles. The outline route is Bath via the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, Bradford-on-Avon via Kennet and Avon Canal, Warminster via Wiltshire Cycle Way, Salisbury via Wylye Way, to Southampton via the Wiltshire Cycle Way.

The final stage from Southampton to London will be organised by the TCT where the "Baton" will be presented to the TCT HQ.

As you can see from the above, details of routes are coming in fast now and your National Councillor will be contacting your Club if they think you can help. We hope you will support this event.

Next month I'm hoping to start listing the Clubs involved with this project so if you want to be involved then don't wait for "the call". Contact me directly and I'll send you more details. You can email me on [email protected] or call me on 07891 761599.

Member Benefits

A question that we often hear is, “What does National do for

us? What value do we get for our Capitations?”

Well, technically, that’s two questions but their answers can be

rolled together into a single response.

You just have to look at this page and the next page. They are

crammed full not of advertisements but of schemes that can

save you money.

We all like to go on holidays, right? Look below. You can save

money on your travel insurance. You can also save on your

utility bills with Utility Warehouse, you can save serious money

if you’re in the market for a new car by using Hyundai’s Affinity

scheme.

Visit www.41club.org/pages/platinum-privileges for full details

of the benefits we provide to our members.

Someone has to go out and look for these deals for you and we

have to work with the companies providing them in order to set

them all up. A small proportion of your Capitations goes towards

securing these offers for you, offers that can save you many

times the £14.50 you pay the Association for a year’s member-

ship.
