Conservation of Exotic Lavender
EXOTIC PLANTS
A species occurring in a given place outside of its native range which has arrived there by human activity, either deliberate or accidental.
Cycad (Encephalartos woodii) Sweet clover Passiflora Lavender lady
MERITS AND DEMERITS OF EXOTIC PLANTS
Merits• Introduction sets an ideal stage
for evolutionary diversification among populations of exotic species
Demerits• Invasion of Exotic Species• A species outside of its native
range that threatens the survival or reproduction of native plants is known as invasive specie
CONSERVATION
The action of Conserving something, particularly preservation or restoration of natural environment and of wild life
In vitro conservation of plant germplasm is a technique used specifically for those plants which do not produce seed
In vitro Conservation is ideal method for conservation of plant germplasm because it require minimum space, Labour and cost
MEDICINAL PLANTS
Tansy Mexican butterfly Lady-fern Marijuana
California-poppyBlack-berriesRed-clover Wild quinine
2,50,000 Higher Plant Species on Earth > 80,000 are medicinal plants
Lavender (Lavendula-spp)
Latin Word “Lavere” that’s mean “To wash” or “To Bath”
Belongs to Family (Lamiaceae) Originated from North Africa, Europe
and India 39 species, numerous hybrids and
400 registered cultivars having aromatic and medicinal properties.
Lavender oil is used to treat acne Anxioxidant and Antiabcterial propertesoil is used in AromatherapySoothing effectRelieve in depression and tensionOrnamental

MORPHOLOGY CHARACTERS
Gray foliage & purple
flowers
Leaves are eight times as
Longer as Wider
leaves are 5cm long
Plants are 2 to 3 feet tall
but some cultivars are
shorter
Leaf shape is oblong.
Plant tissue culture can defined as growing and multiplication of cells, tissues and organs of plants on defined solid or liquid media under aseptic environment and controlled conditions of light, temperature and humidity.
TISSUE CULTURE
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
To study the best sterilization method for in vitro propagation of lavender.
To study the effect of different concentration of hormones on the micropropagation of lavender
Multiplication of Lavender by vegetative means ( in vitro multiplication).
To evaluate the antioxidant activity of lavender.

EXPLANT SELECTION
Shoot cutting from mature and Healthy
plant grown in field
Apical and lateral part was selected For in

Cont…..
• Washing with Tween 20• Surface sterilized with 5%, 7%,
10%, 12% & 15% sodium hypochlorite
Surface Sterilization
• MS Media with Stocks, Myo, vitamin, Sugar and Agar
• PH : 5.8• Autoclave media at 121ºC for 7 minutes

Explant Culture And incubation
• Cuttings are further asetically cut
• Implant vertically in test tubes
Growth Regulators
• Three hormonal medias were used, M1 MS media, M2 BAP(0.1, 0.2, 0.3)+NAA(0.1) and M3 BAP(0.1, 0.2, 0.3)+IAA(0.1)

Antioxidant Activity
Take Dry leaves powder of 0.5g and add 5ml of different solvents (Methanol, Acetone, Ethnol, Methyl Accetate,Petrolium Ether, Hexane etc)
Take different concentration (5,10,15, 20, 25µl) of extract in test tubes.
Dissolve each concentration in 1000µl methanol and take 25µl in each test tube
Dissolve DPPH in methnol and add 2.7ml per test tube
Cont…..
Keep in Dryer at 37º C for half an Hour.Check the sample on
spectrophotometer at 517nm keeping methnol as blank in opposite cavette
Compare values by formulae Control-Test samples × 100 control (Control: 1.092)

CONCLUSION
Surface sterilization (5% NaOCl) and micropropagation of lavender by cutting in media containing BAP(0.3mglˉ¹)+ NAA(0.1mglˉ¹) is optimum for acquired plants
• Different combinations of MS media as well as different hydroponics media can also be tested.
• Other than stem cuttings, leaf and root cuttings can also be experimented
• Due to antioxidant activity of lavender it should be used in drug development for cancer patients
• Acquired plants should be investigated for their other medicinal properties
