In vitro fertilization (IVF) or Test-tube baby is a process in which eggs are taken out from woman's ovaries and then fertilized with sperms in a fluid medium in the laboratory. The fertilization procedure depends on semen parameters like sperm count, motility, morphology etc. Eggs are placed with motile sperm overnight in conventional IVF.
If these parameters are severely affected, then one sperm is injected microscopically into the egg : the procedure is called Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
The fertilised eggs (embryos) are then transferred to the patient's uterus with the intent to establish a successful pregnancy..
