Southeast Community College, BryanLGH College of Health Sciences and BryanLGH Medical Center are partnering to provide healthcare students access to state-of-the-art, high-fidelity patient simulators by cre-ating the Center for Excellence in Clinical Simulation.

The Center is a collaborative effort between the two colleges and the medical center, who share a common vision to provide high quality education to tomorrow’s

healthcare providers. The partnership in-creases the number of students and clinicians that have access to this advanced learning tech-nology and increases the number of faculty available to teach.

There are three adult simulators, a pediatric simulator, and the newest addi-tion – a birthing simulator named Noelle and an infant named Baby Hal. Multiple patient care scenarios can be created, ranging from basic to complex. Examples

The newest tools for innovative, hands-on learning at BryanLGH College of Health Sciences have arrived! The College has purchased two plastinates, which are produced by BODY WORLDS. We are the first academic institution in the U.S. to receive these whole body specimens. This is an important advancement in

include assessing a child with asthma, administering medications, performing interventions and simulating a heart attack. Mother-baby scenarios include an un-complicated delivery or one with complications such as hemorrhage or an unresponsive baby.

Student Chelsey Bartling, of Malcolm, got to use the new birthing simulator for the first time on March 11. “I got to deliver a baby today,” she said with a smile. “The simulators provide a good learning environment. You can learn from your mistakes without hurting someone and having to learn the hard way.” She feels that having access to these learning tools will make her a better nurse.

Southeast Community College students in all health programs will have the opportunity to use the Center, including nursing students, radiologic technology, respiratory care and emergency medical services/para-medic. BryanLGH College of Health Sciences nurs-ing students, as well as nurse anesthesia students, will also attend classes at the Center. BryanLGH Medical Center clinicians will use the simulators for learning and competency assessment.

educating our anatomy students. One plastinate features nerves and skeletal muscles; the other provides the ability to view internal organs. The plastinates will be used in our anatomy class beginning with the Fall 2010 semester. The plastinates were purchased through public donations.

Meet the Plastinates

BryanLGH College of Health Sciences will begin offering its NLNAC ac-credited RN-BSN completion option in a hybrid format Fall 2010. A hybrid format uses a variety of instructional methods in a non-traditional format to increase flexibility for nurses while still having direct contact with faculty. The hybrid format involves a mix of face-to-face on-campus sessions with

independent study and on-line learning assignments. During a semester, a class will meet on campus three times with supplemental work completed on-line or as independent study over the semes-ter. The three on-campus sessions will be scheduled using Friday evenings and Saturday days. If interested, please con-tact Assistant Professor Karen Westover at 402-481-8857.
