The hot Texas summer is coming and with it all the things we associate with this time of year – no school, swimming, baseball, Vacation Bible School, weekends at the lake, family trips and so on. Most of these are enjoyable activities that help us to appreciate Gods gift of rest, his creation, and the great outdoors. While we are busy with all these happenings, however, it is easy for them to take over our lives. The importance of your relationship with God does not diminish or change during the summer months. Likewise, our church programs continue and our financial needs remain the same. Whenever you are in town, I encourage you to remain active participants in worship and Bible Class/ Sunday School throughout the summer. Even while on vacation don't forget about God. Make plans to worship at a Lutheran Church near your vacation destination. (Go to www.lcms.org and click on Locators & Directories to find a church by state and city.) Take your Bible, hymnal, and devotional materials with you on vacation and make time to read and pray. If you are in a remote location plan your own family worship with a Bible story, prayer, and hymn or song. Invite each person to name something for which they are thankful. Be creative! We can be eternally grateful that God never takes a vacation from us. We read in Psalm 121, He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep (v. 3b-4). Page 2: in this world is done by Messiah Messenger hope. Martin Luther · diminish or change during the summer months Likewise, ... He expects our love and obedience in return for His love

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land,

which the Lord thy God gives you.” (Exodus 20: 12)

The first three commandments of God define our relationship with our heavenly Father. Jesus summarizes the first

three commandments in Matthew 22:37, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all

you mind.” Love for God is our first priority in life. He expects our love and obedience in return for His love for us.

The last seven commandments define our relationship with our fellow man. Jesus summarizes these as stated in

Matthew 22:39, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus certainly showed us His love when He offered Himself as a

sacrifice to pay for our sins. “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) He

offers Agape Love, a love with no strings attached.

I believe the forth commandment, Honor your father and your mother, ties the love for God with the love for mankind,

starting with the love for your family. God intended for the children’s instructions to begin at home. Deuteronomy

6:5-7, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These

commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when

you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” This is really walking

the walk as we show our love for God by the way we lead our lives. Our children will know if we say one thing, but do

another.

As we are obedient to this commandment by giving respect and honor to our parents, we are more able to give respect

and honor to our heavenly Father. It is the responsibility of the parents to teach their children to respect proper rules,

principles, and laws. This helps us to establish a life-long pattern of being a God fearing person and a benefit to

society. Proverbs 22:6 tell us to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.

As we set aside a day in June to honor our earthly fathers, let us be reminded daily to honor our heavenly Father.

“Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out ‘ Abba

Father.’” (Galatians 4:6) The term, Abba Father, is intimate, meaning Daddy God. I can just imagine crawling up into

Abba Father’s lap and calling Him Daddy as He wraps His loving arms around me.

Happy Father’s Day

Cordillera Ranch.

The wine is provided by you! This event starts at 6:30 PM. Appetizers and desserts will be provided by Messiah. We ask

Saturday & Sunday, September 17th & 18th Anniversary Weekend

featuring a catered banquet on Saturday evening and Festive Worship on Sunday with Pastor Mark Dankis

returning to preach!

Years and years ago the church where I grew up

published the end of year amounts so that everyone in

the congregation knew what each member was giving

or not. What the reasoning behind this was, I don’t

know, other than maybe to try and keep up with the

Jones’. I do know that the 10% guide was used from

scripture known as a tithe.

When I was in my early 20’s I noticed there was a big

giver listed every year. My curiosity led me to ask him

how he could afford giving so much.

He told me he had read years earlier in Malachi 3:7-12

where God said to test Him. He said he always tried to

out give God but he couldn’t, he said God just kept on

giving to him over and over again and again. He is

blessed in every way, not just money.

In Proverbs 3:9-10 God talks about honoring Him with

your wealth. In Luke 6:38 Jesus talks about giving.

There are people who have the gift of giving. They give

sometimes beyond their ability because they want to

give out of love for their Lord and Savior.

Giving of finances, time and talents is what it’s all

about. God wants us, that means our total being.

Everything we have is His anyway, we are the stewards

of all He has given. (Job 41:11)

God has blessed us so much but being in a materialistic

country it is really hard to focus on what God wants.

What I will challenge you to do, is out give the Lord. If

you are giving 5% move it up to 6 or 7%. If you are

giving 10% move it up to 11 or 12%. If you are giving

until it hurts start giving until it feels good. If you are

not giving, start. God will bless you as He always does.

This is our response to what he has given, His love and

His life for us.

Walk and Run for God Bible Study

The twelve week “Walk and Run for God” Bible Study class is now in its

second month. During this time Becky Behrens talked to the class about

the spiritual and physical reasons that she enjoys running, Irene Glaske

shared her running experiences as well as provided guidance and

encouragement, and Susan Thomas gave an in-depth presentation on

nutrition. In each class we discuss what we have accomplished the past

week such as running or walking using a training app, being properly

fitted for new sports shoes, or sharing what unforeseen development has

interrupted our training schedule. As a class we are preparing to walk/

run in the July 10th Boerne “Texas Too Hot 5K”. There will also be a

“graduation run” at the end of the program. It is not only about running

but walking as well. There is no time like the present for changing one’s

life style, both spiritually and physically. As a class, everyone works at

his/her on pace to reap beneficial rewards. God has given us the ability to

become healthier while we glorify Him. Come join us during the Bible

study hour in the upstairs conference room.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses

to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down,

especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with

endurance the race God has set before us. Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

Betty Jon Scott Grese passed away in

Phoenix on Friday, May 6, 2016, at the age of

94. Born on Aug. 3, 1921, in Adkins, the

youngest of seven, Betty grew up surrounded

by family. She was lived until her marriage to

Hank Grese in 1947.

Betty and Hank raised two boys together

and retired to Fair Oaks Ranch in 1986, later

moving into Boerne and the community at Menger Springs.

Throughout her life, Betty could be found exercising with women half

her age, painting and firing ceramics, and traveling the world. At any

gathering, you could count on corn pudding and her special Purple

Stuff. She excelled at cards and dominoes, taught her grandchildren to

skip, was an avid user of the Internet and email, and loved to collect

rocks. When you told Betty you loved her, she would laugh in delight

before telling you she loved you, too.

Betty is survived by her son David and his wife Gaylan; grandchildren

Whitney and Scott and their husbands Craig and Jon; greatgrandson

Vaughan; and numerous adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and

friends. She was preceded in death by her son Stephen and her

husband Hank.

Betty was the queen of a large extended family who will be celebrating

her life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at Mount Olive Cemetery, 3369

Mt. Olive Rd, Adkins, with a reception to follow at the Resurrection

United Methodist Church, 7709 Knowlton Rd., San Antonio. Donations

may be made in Betty’s name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at

Messiah Members - The response to the

children's Summer Sunday school

teacher sign up is disappointingly

lacking and we are only two weeks away

from it starting. I cannot stress to you

enough how important it is for you to

volunteer to teach. This year it is a

combined elementary class, but do not

let that steer you away. On average, there are fewer

than 10 kids here during the summer months which

makes for a small class. If we do not find the teachers,

the kids will just have to sit with parents during Sunday

School and that is not fair to them. I will be gone the

following dates:

June 12th June 26th July 3rd

July 17th August 7th.

Those days really need a teacher since I will not be here

Hipolito and Irma came to the Center the other day to introduce their new baby

daughter to the volunteers and workers. What a beautiful baby girl! They are first

time parents and are one of the nine Spanish speaking families who received prenatal

care classes in 2015. Every week since the beginning of their pregnancy they came to the Center for their classes.

They both said, “We are very thankful with all the help we got from the HCPCC – not only with the material things but also

we got educated about prenatal care. Child birth and newborn care.” They are now looking forward to continuing with

parenting classes.

Rafiki

The following are just a few of the recent blessings expressed in the latest edition of the Rafiki Report. Give thanks with the Rafiki

Foundation for these eternal returns in their various programs.

Schools: The ten Rafiki schools are educating 1,720 children, PreK-12th grade; over half of these come from surrounding communities.

There are even waiting lists. One Rwandan father registered his new infant for the 2020 school year.

Childcare Program: One resident orphan has received a four year, full scholarship to Asheshi University, a top West African university.

Also another child ranked second place in a national singing competition for 10-14 year olds. He sang “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning.”

Bible Study: All adult-level lessons, 553 weeks worth, are complete. Knowing God’s Word does not go out without accomplishing what it

is sent to do, we view this as our greatest investment – allowing us to put the living Word of God into the hands of our church partners

for use in their schools, at no cost to them.

Rafiki Institute of Classical Education: Over 200 RICE students are being trained as Christian and classical educators. Some RICE

graduates are now serving in Rafiki and church schools, and the first franchise in Malawi, Jan. 2016, already has a waiting list.

We continually ask God to enable Rafiki to help its church partners establish or transform 1,000 schools in ten years, that millions more

may come to know God through Bible study, and to raise their standards of living through Christian classical education. Through this,

we hope to compound our investment for eternal returns.

Your prayer support of the Rafiki villages is appreciated. We are making a difference! If you would like to know more or send a financial

donation, please contact the Rafiki Foundation at PO Box 1988, Eustis, FL 32727 or call (352) 483-9131 or go online.
