Page 2: In This Issuetest.fatcat-studios.com/msda/MSDA_Dec2013.pdfshorter telomeres are associated with obesity and weight gain in the elderly. Int J. Obes (Lond). 2013; 36(9): 1176-1179.

At last there is recent evidence that a “spartan” or Mediterranean-style diet, combined with exercise and stress reducing techniques, can increase telomere length at the ends of cellular chromosomes. Reports by Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD (who won the Nobel Prize in 2009 with research on telomeres) and as co-authored by Dean Ornish, MD (Armick, D., L.N.J, Chan JM, Effect of Comprehensive lifestyle changes on telomerase activity and telomere length in men with biopsy-proven low-risk prostate cancer: 5-year follow-up of a descriptive pilot study. Lancet Onco, 2013; 14(11): 1112-1120 and Njajou, OT, Cawthon, RN, Blackburn, EH, et. al. shorter telomeres are associated with obesity and weight gain in the elderly. Int J. Obes (Lond). 2013; 36(9): 1176-1179. (reported by Kevin Lomangino in Clinical Nutr. Insight, Nov. 2013).

Telomeres are protein complexes on the ends of chromosomes that keep the DNA from unraveling. Portions are lost every time a cell divides, the shorter telomeres are associated with aging. Shorter telomeres are associated with an increased risk of cancer, Alzheimer’s, obesity and early mortality.

Ornish and Blackburn report that after adherence to a strict low fat, Mediterranean-style diet, and other interventions (Table 1 – see Ornish); telomere length had increased after 5 years, and that in the group with no intervention (control) the telomere length had decreased. Further, the more profound the adherence to the “Ornish” regimen, the longer the telomeres, relative to those with poor adherence.

Small sample size and poor controlling led the authors to “report increased as associated without necessarily proving causation”. “Additionally, although increases in relative telomere length are thought to be beneficial, the full biological implications remain to be determined in large randomized, controlled trails.” “But these findings indicate that telomeres may lengthen to the degree that people change how they live.”

It remains to be seen which aspects of the Ornish program is beneficial, as it is multifaceted, ie., dietary, exercise, meditation and group therapy. Any or all of these elements could affect outcomes of telomere length. Other studies suggest longer telomeres based on fiber intake, Omega-3 FA, Vitamin D, adherence to the Mediterranean-style diet and other factors.

The study also promoted telomere testing. But Dr. Carol Greider, who shared the 2009 Nobel Prize with Blackburn, says, “The science really isn’t there to tell us what the consequences are of your telomere length.” (reported in N.Y. Times, May 18, 2011).

Well this is good enough for me. This is exactly what I espouse, and I try to adhere to it, you may feel better, or at least, not so old!! I feel old every time I do a sit-up, or

run a mile, or ride a bike for a half hour, but I guess I would feel worse if I never tried!!

On a completely different subject: I have been asked to appeal to “the choir”, ie, the people who already do the most volunteering, to volunteer with the DDS Program, or the Donated Dental Services Program. This is where one patient a year (or more frequently if you desire) is assigned to your care and you see the patient in your office for their dental needs on a one-time basis (or more as you request). The patient history is forwarded to you, and you decide whether to see them, and what their treatment should be. Lab work is covered by DDS. I swear I get more from the program than I contribute!

For more information about the DDS Program and/or to sign up, please contact Lilian Marsh, Executive Director for DDS, at 410.964.1944.

Also, the Mid. MD MOM is now set for September 4, 5 & 6 at the Cole Field House at the University of Maryland Campus, College Park. It is sponsored by the U of MD School of Public Health. See you there!

Very Best, T F

Mission of Mercy a Success!

Mission of Mercy clinics (MOM) are large scale two day dental clinics that provide free dental care to any attendee on a first come first serve basis. They are designed to treat the underserved and bring them the much needed dental care required for them to live healthy and successful lives.

The Western Maryland Mission of Mercy at Allegany Fairgrounds went off without a hitch on October 24th-25th, and the dental practitioners of the region brought over $600,000 in dental care to the needy. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the clinic planners, and all of the volunteers, over 700 patients were given the dental care they so desperately needed.

The MSDA Charitable & Educational Foundation has continued to sponsor and facilitate MOM clinics in Maryland by supplying funding, supplies, guidance and the equipment used at the clinics.

MOM clinics are truly a testament to the philanthropy of the dental community. They strongly demonstrate what can be accomplished through the work of organized dentists. If you would like to join your fellow dental practitioners in giving back to the public, please consider volunteering at the upcoming MOM events or donating to support them at www.msda.com/foundation. Membership MattersThe following members were approved for

membership with MSDA in November 2013.

The American Dental Association (ADA) is offering its members a new resource to help them address their professional and practice challenges.

The ADA Center for Professional Success, an online resource that launched in September, is a free, one-stop shop for ADA-member dentists who are seeking resources to help them succeed as dental practitioners and small business owners. The website includes tips for choosing a career path to balancing personal and professional lives to planning for retirement.

“Dentists spend their days making clinical decisions to provide the best treatment for their patients,” said ADA President Robert A. Faiella, D.M.D., M.M.Sc. “While caring for patients is dentists’ primary goal, they are also juggling business and personal tasks every day. The ADA Center for Professional Success allows members to focus on being a dentist while we help to streamline the rest.”

Among some of the center’s features are:

• Financialcalculatorstofactorloanpaymentsandoverheadexpenditures;

• In-personandonlinepracticemanagementeducation;

• Ergonomictipstoreducehand,neckandbackpain;

• Patientcommunicationstrategies;

• Dentalbenefitresources;

• Informationonbuyingandsellingapractice;

• Marketingmaterialstorecruitandretainpatients;

• Staffingtips.

ADA members can expect to find something new each time they visit because new content is added regularly. Members can also take a virtual tour of the website and use the “Ask the ADA” feature to ask practice management and wellness questions to ADA staff.

The ADA Center for Professional Success is sustained with the help of several corporate sponsors. Founding sponsors include ADA Business Resources and ADA Members Insurance Plans, and Gold Sponsors are AXA Equitable – ADA Members Retirement Programs and Procter & Gamble. F

If a service member, veteran or military spouse meets the requirements for a license, certificate or permit, the Board will issue the license, certificate or permit within 15 business days after receiving a completed application.

The Board will credit any training and education provided by the military and completed by a service member toward any training or education requirements for a license, certificate or permit, if the training or education is determined by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the training or education required by the Board and not otherwise contrary to any other licensing requirement.

In addition, if there is an experience for licensure or certification, the Board will give credit to the applicant for all relevant experience as a service member.

All examination requirements will be applicable and must be satisfied.For each application, the Board will assign an advisor to assist the applicant with

the application process. If the applicant does not meet the education, training or experience requirements for a license, certificate or permit, the advisor will assist in identifying programs that offer relevant education or training, or ways of obtaining needed experience.

A “veteran” is defined as a former service member who was discharged from active duty under circumstances other than dishonorable within 1 year before the date on which the application is received. A “veteran” does not include an individual who has completed active duty and has been discharged for more than 1 year before the application is submitted. A “military spouse” means the spouse of a service member or veteran and includes the surviving spouse of a veteran or a service member who died within 1 year before the date on which the application of the military spouse is submitted.

Dr. Soliday Receives Special Citation

J. Thomas Soliday, DDS received a Special Citation from the AAOMS Board of Trustees during the opening ceremony of the 95th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) in Orlando, FL. The Special Citation was awarded in honor of Dr. Soliday’s long-term service as Speaker of first the AAOMS (eight years) and then the American Dental Association (10 years) House of Delegates. He received AAOMS’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010.

A diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Soliday is a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, the International Academy of Dentists, and the Pierre-Fuchard Academy in addition to membership in his local, state and national dental and specialty societies. He is a former president of the Southern Maryland Dental Society, Maryland State Dental Association and Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Within the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Soliday is as well, if not better, known for his and his wife’s annual humanitarian trips to Honduras, as he is for his prowess as a parliamentarian. Grateful for the opportunity to share his surgical “gifts,” he is quick to emphasize that delivering care to this needy population has enriched his life far more than the lives of his patients. F

Treating Periodontal Disease as Infectious Diseases: Anti-Infective Periodontal Therapy ( 4 CE Credits)Date: Fri., April 25, 2014 Time: 8:30 AM – 12:30 PMFees: $75 MSDA Member / $175 Non-MemberInstructor: Dr. Lawrence Page & Dr. Thomas RamLocation: MSDA Classroom, Columbia, MDRefreshments: Breakfast will be servedDescription: Periodontal diseases are chronic infectious diseases. About 1/2 of the population has periodontitis ranging from slowly progressing with little destruction to rapid loss of periodontal support. Traditional treatment, both surgical and non-surgical, can only predictably control periodontitis in less susceptible people. The most susceptible individuals often continue to lose support with either of these treatment modalities. Properly applying the principals of infectious disease control as developed for other infectious diseases can stop periodontal destruction, and may reduce or arrest systemic disease effects caused by periodontitis. Periodontal pathogenic microorganisms must be identified, monitored and effectively treated before, during and just as important, after any type of active periodontal treatment to insure disease control. This course presents effective methods for infection monitoring and treatment of pathogenic periodontal infections by dental professionals, as well as strategies to reliably control supra- and sub gingival biofilms via patient home care procedures. Participants will be able to: use methods for effective identification of high risk infections; treat these infections; train patients in effective biofilm removal, design an effective hygiene program for disinfection and select antibiotics for therapy and monitor for recurrence of infections.

CNA Risk Management Seminar (4.5 CE Credits) Sponsored by R.K. Tongue, Co., Inc. – a MSDA Endorsed Vendor Date: Thur, May 8, 2014 OR Fri., May 9, 2014 Time: 8:00 AM – 12:30 PMFees: $125 ALL AttendeesInstructor: Ronald Zentz, DDSLocation: MSDA Classroom, Columbia, MDRefreshments: Hot Breakfast is provided, beginning at 7:15 AMDescription: In today’s litigious society, managing risk is critical. Don’t wait until after you’ve had a malpractice claim to learn the most effective ways to protect your patients and your practice

This is a great opportunity to learn from the experiences of your colleagues, as the presentation and discussion of actual claims lead you and your staff through a myriad of key risk exposures. A sampling of the course topics includes:• Pre-treatmentissues,includingthemedicalhistory,examinations,and radiography• Bestpracticesformanagingclinicalrisks• Creatingpatientrecordsthatdocumentandsupportyourcare• Informedconsentandinformedrefusal

• Terminatingthedentist-patientrelationship• Managingadverseevents,andmuchmore

The course was developed by dentists for both dentists and their staffs. Good risk management depends on the entire dental team understanding the issues and working together, making this a great course for the entire staff to attend.

The presentation will provide you with skills, tips and techniques to better manage patients and your role in the practice. Its goal is to stimulate you to assess your practice, apply critical thinking based on the information presented, and make prudent choices that enhance patient care and reduce your chance of a malpractice claim. Each attendee will receive a comprehensive course workbook that makes a great reference resource to have at the office.

There’s something in the course for everyone, whether you’re learning new techniques or simply validating the good risk management protocols you already follow.

Dentists who are insured with R.K Tongue and the Professional Protection Plan for their professional liability insurance will receive a 7.5% premium credit off their professional liability policy, good for 3 years.
