Senior Prize Giving 2016

On a superb evening at the Holy Trinity Cathedral we were called in with a Kaikaranga by Keighlee Burkhart and led in by Shaquila Pathan to a conch call executed brilliantly by Jessica Rolle. The Senior Choir sang Tiaho I roto and the evening was then opened with a spectacular rendition of the national anthem.

Vice Chancellor’s Significant Student Scholarships went to Tanaya Kleeman, Charlotte Porter, Alyssa Pua and Talia Pua. And finally, the University of Auckland Top Achievers’ Scholarships were awarded to Claudia Bridger, Tracy Chen, Anneke Tomkins and Natalee Zhu. In most instances, schools are very fortunate to score just one of these prestigious scholarships so we are delighted with these outcomes for our girls. Congratulations!

It was also very special to this year have a recipient of the Sir George Elliot Tertiary Scholarship that is awarded across the country to selected applicants. It is worth $25,000 and this year was awarded to Isabella McPhee. As well, Annabelle Paterson has won a very prestigious award – she has been granted a four-year swimming and academic grant of $75,000 per year at Harvard University. This is an exceptional outcome and we are delighted for Annabelle. The pinnacle of academic awards for the evening were the Old Girls’ League Eliza Edwards Memorial Award as well as the Dux and Proxime Accessit Awards.

Awarded to a student leaving the school who throughout her schooling has contributed to many school activities, shown high personal standards and has exhibited the qualities inherent in the foundation of the School, this year’s Eliza Edwards prize winner was Anneke Tomkins.

The Proxime Accessit was awarded to Katie Henry who has achieved outstanding results throughout her years at Diocesan - she began at Diocesan in Year 1. The ultimate academic award – the Dux was a joint award to IB Diploma student Daniela Sowter and to NCEA student Talia Pua. Both students have almost perfect scores leading into the forthcoming examinations and both also started at Diocesan in Year 1.

We are delighted that so many girls who have progressed through all of their years at Diocesan have achieved such outstanding results. We wish the girls all the very best for their forthcoming examinations. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to their outstanding achievements.

Founders’ Day Assembly

On Tuesday 1 November we celebrated the annual Founders’ Day full school assembly. We were delighted to host the great granddaughter of one of the founders – Mrs Jane Williams. Her great grandfather was Sir Edwin Mitchelson who was mayor of Auckland at the turn of the twentieth century. He supported the development of this School at a time when educating young women for academic purposes was not popular. Jane shared many stories and photographs of what life was like at Diocesan. In early photos of the pool, girls sat on the roof to cheer each other on at the swimming sports. Health and safety was certainly viewed differently in those days! Our special thanks to Jane who has continued the Mitchelson involvement in the School. Jane is an Old Girl, she served on the Board of Governors, was instrumental in the formation of the Heritage Foundation in 2001 and is now a trustee on the Foundation, worked in the School as the Development Manager, and now has a granddaughter at Diocesan.

Achievements

Congratulations to Alice Mander, Joanna Li and Emma Uren who have attended Young Writers Programme workshops this year and have been chosen to have their works published for 2016 in Signals which is the literary journal of the Young Writers’ Programme.

Congratulations to Brooke Elliott-Forster-Clampitt who recently competed at the New Zealand 2016 Nationals Irish Dancing competition. Brooke competed against 30 people in her age group, and won the U-12 New Zealand title.

Our Young Enterprise entrepreneurs Holly Purkis and Sarah Hiles-Smith have won the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, Auckland Central Region Award for Innovation in Sustainability 2016 for their business Plant and Grind. Their simple idea of upcycling used coffee grounds grew into the production of planter kits and lesson plans that primary school children can use in the classroom to learn and grow their own bean plants – ‘Kits to grow sustainable minds’. Well done girls.

Congratulations to our Show Jumping team who were placed third at the North Island Secondary Schools’ Show Jumping Championships held at St Peter’s Cambridge recently. This was a fantastic result for a very young team consisting of three Year 9s and one Year 11 rider.Estella Loughlin (Year 9) was placed the top individual scorer of the day and the rest of the team was made up of Olivia Chitty (Year 11), Bella Jones (Year 9) and Francesca Masfen (Year 9).

Leavers’ Dinner

The Year 13s and teachers recently attended the Leavers’ Dinner and what a very special evening it was! Ella Simanu was our MC and, in her usual relaxed and capable manner, she brought the evening together beautifully.

Sarah McLaren spoke on behalf of the staff. She shared some of her life experiences and offered the girls her words of wisdom. Sarah Robinson made quite an exceptional speech on behalf of all the Year 13 students. She had us smiling, reflecting and shaking in our seats with laughter. Sarah really is a most adroit performer, destined for success on the stage!

Entertainment, provided by Rebekah Adams and Eddy Grant; Ashleigh Yu; Liz Vaka’uta, Ana Vaitohi and Pesi Langi-Tuaefe added to the enjoyment of the evening.

The evening was rounded off with the announcement of the prestigious Leavers’ Cup. The Year 13 students vote for this award and they are asked to select someone who, to them, has made the best contribution to the year group in her final year at school. This year’s winner was Emily Steven (13CW) and the runner up was Gwen Lin (13NE) Congratulations to both Emily and Gwen.

It was a wonderful evening, full of happy memories, laughter and even a few tears, which truly reflects the special bond that this group of girls has, and will continue to have, as they end their school years at Diocesan.

Learning programme for St Christopher’s

“Give a child a raincoat, protect him for a day. Teach him to make a raincoat, protect him for a lifetime.” Fijian Proverb

As part of an NCEA Scholarship Course, Sophia Hawkins (Year 13) designed a personalised teaching and learning programme for young Fijian children at St Christopher’s Home in Nakasi, Fiji. Sophia’s goal was to provide fabric, a pattern and step-by-step instructions in order for each child to learn to sew their very own shorts and rain jacket. Sophia worked tirelessly to navigate a number of obstacles throughout her project; the distance between New Zealand and Fiji, cost factors for postage, availability of resources, just to name a few. Sophia has been instrumental in acquiring donations of fabric to send to the children. The photos are testimony to Sophia’s wonderful vision and warm compassion for these children. They are learning skills for life. Ut Serviamus.

Lemonade fundraiser

A great example of philanthropy and starting early – two Year 7 students, Bella Ferguson and Clover Andrews, made lemonade and sold it at their stall to raise funds for the Diocesan Arts Centre. They set up outside Clover’s house when an ‘Open Home’ was taking place next door and raised $41.20. Their mothers offered to match it and then their grandparents did the same.

Clover and Bella came in to present the funds to Ms McRae and she matched their fundraising efforts with $50. So now the grand total of Bella and Clover’s lemonade fundraiser is $277.20! An amazing effort and a big thank you to you both – well done Bella and Clover!

Year 7 Literary Lunch Activity Day – Thursday 17 November

On Thursday 17 November, from periods 3-6, all Year 7 students will be involved in our annual Literary Lunch activity day. The theme this year is Roald Dahl stories.

Shortly, in their English classes, students will be preparing a play based around one of Dahl’s books. Their English teachers will discuss the requirements fully in class time over the next few weeks. All students will also be dressing in costume for this event. Girls should dress up as a character from the play they will be presenting to others on the day. Emphasis will be on home-made costumes assembled by the student as opposed to bought or hired costumes. Please encourage your daughter to think creatively about how she can devise her costume.

On the day, students will attend usual timetabled classes for periods 1 and 2 as well as attend tutor time. After interval they will assemble and then take part in a range of activities: rehearse and present their plays, participate in a quiz, a literary treasure hunt, watch the final of the spelling bee, and enjoy a shared lunch.

Shared Lunch

Girls are requested to provide enough finger food to share amongst approximately five students. We ask that the girls bring nutritious food on a disposable plate as part of our shared lunch. If you have a container, please make sure you label it and remind your daughter to pick it up at the end of the day. It is good to discuss with your daughter what you would be happy to provide. We suggest sliced pizza, chicken nibbles, bacon and egg pie, quiche, pin wheel sandwiches or savoury slices of some sort. Please no chips or lollies! Five students from each English class will be asked to bring something sweet for dessert eg sliced cake, pies or tarts. Please make sure that any cooked food is well cooked as we will only be able to warm a small amount of food. Girls are to bring their own drink bottle and a snack for their morning tea. This information will be repeated in an upcoming Dio Beat.

This will be an exciting and memorable day for the students and we look forward to sharing the day with them.

We do require help with setting out lunch and with cleaning up afterwards. We need approximately two parent helpers per English class from 11.30am to 2pm. If you are available to help, please e-mail your daughter’s English teacher who will give you further details.

Sport

Hockey

Last week Nicola Prebble and Ella Poole-Crowe were selected into the New Zealand U-19 Junior Black Sticks programme. The girls will attend a selection/training camp at the start of December. Both these girls have been picked after outstanding performances throughout the year at the National U-18 Tournament and Federation Cup. Congratulations Nicola and Ella.

Touch

On Friday last week the Year 7and 8 Dio Touch team competed in the Central Zone Tournament. After only losing one game all day, they made it through the semi-finals, beating Remuera Intermediate 1-0 but then narrowly lost the final against Waikowhai 1-0 to finish second at the tournament. This was a tremendous effort from the girls and they played extremely well all day. A big thank you to Nick Blundell for all of his efforts with this group. The girls in this team were: Lily Bond, Phoebe Duncan, Sienna Gray, Charlotte Hulme, Amelia Irwin, Olivia Pearce, Mia Reid, Kate Shanley, Sophie Taylor, Allegra Wilson and Maddison Robb.

Underwater Hockey

Diocesan has enjoyed a very successful year in the pool – and the girls are still being recognised.  Montana Wilson, Olivia Coulter, Charlotte Borich, Emily Kronfeld and Edwina Grant have been selected in a squad of 20 girls for the Northern U-18 Women’s Underwater Hockey team who will compete at the U-18 Inter Zone Underwater Hockey tournament in December. Well done girls!

Water Polo

The Diocesan White Intermediate team continued with their fine form this year, topping off a great season by winning the North Island Championships. The tournament was played over the weekend where the White team finished unbeaten. They met with rivals Aquinas in the finals and won convincingly 5-1. Emma Gilleece was named as an outstanding player and Isabelle Jackson tournament Most Valuable Player. Diocesan was again the most represented school at this age group, fielding three full teams. Diocesan Blue finished in a credible fifth place (having only lost by a goal to St Cuthbert’s A in the quarter final). Diocesan Red showed great resilience and continuous improvement and finished ninth.

Diocesan White: Stella Boyte, Sophie Mead, Sophie Shorter-Robinson, Arabella White, Isabelle Jackson, Emma Gilleece, Lauren Batchelor, Hannah Bell, Lucia Partigliani, Emma Nisbet and Sophie Ireland.

Dio win at 2016 NZ Aria Competition

This weekend Year 12 student Libby Johnston has taken the big prize at the 2016 New Zealand Aria Competition. She was awarded first place, winner of the New Zealand Aria Trophy (16-18 category). This is an amazing achievement for our Dio star, and she gained the highest marks across three classes and genres, which is extremely difficult.1st place - Own Selection 1st place - Folk/Traditional1st place - Light Entertainment 3rd place - Sacred Song

Libby has excelled at musical theatre and drama since arriving at Dio in Year 10 and this year has been no exception. She took the lead role in Guys and Dolls earlier in the year and had a Showdown nomination for the Best Female in a Leading Role.

She was the only pre-college student from New Zealand, one of only a select handful of international students, and the first New Zealander to be accepted into the music theatre programme at Carnegie Mellon in the United States. She starred in the lead role in a short film for the All- American High School Film Festival which was screened at the AMC cinemas in Times Square. And this year she gained the highest mark in the country for her Grade 6 singing exam. So an incredibly successful year for our very talented singer, dancer and actor – congratulations Libby!

At the same competition we also saw our very talented Year 9 singer Hannah Flacks, win second prize in the U-21 category for Performance of a New Zealand work. For one so young this is quite an amazing achievement. Hannah has also had a great year with wins at Opera Idol, and the lead role in our production of Annie.

Final senior events in Dio calendar celebrate successes

Two big events in the last few weeks have celebrated the many and varied successes of our talented girls. Our Arts Awards Dinner on Thursday 20 October acknowledged work beyond the academic curriculum, and it was quite staggering to see the high levels these girls achieve in their spare time. And then a week later, Senior Prize Giving, a very impressive event in the school calendar which was a wonderful celebration for the recipients of awards and the musicians providing the music for the evening. And once again, this academic prize giving bore witness to the very high percentage of musicians receiving top academic awards.

Hugely supported by each other, many musicians stepped out of the orchestra and choir, with multiple awards being won by Year 11 Flora Fan, Year 12 Lydia Watson and Year 13s Claudia Bridger, Tracy Chen and Daniela Sowter. An outstanding feat of the evening was musician, violinist and singer Daniela Sowter being presented as Dux, following in the footsteps of Christine Li last year and many previous top scholars. Many of our top Year 13 musicians then went onto receive prestigious university scholarships.

The evening was filled with music, the choir performing an upbeat spiritual followed by Bree McBain, Claudia Bridger and Tracy Chen performing as the jazzy Peterson wind trio.

Congratulations to the following girls who received music scholarships for 2017:• Heidi Bernard - Ethel Sandford Bursary • Alexandra Francis, Libby Johnston, Alice Mander– Friends of Music Scholarship for Year 12• Olivia Beckett, Kitty Milner – Friends of Music Scholarship for Contemporary Music• Sofie Yeung, Belinda Xiong – Friends of Music Scholarship for Year 11.

2017 Dio/Dilworth Production

We are delighted to announce next year’s senior production, the all-time Broadway favourite Into the Woods by Stephen Sondiem, recently made popular with the film version starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp. This is a perfect choice for our talented Dio singers as there are some seven female lead roles. We also are thrilled to announce that we will be taking this show to a real theatre, performing at the Raye Freedman Centre in early May 2017. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to work in a real theatre, and of course a taster of what we have in store here on our campus – our own 1000 seater auditorium and theatre.

We have also secured the fabulous talents of Jeremy Birchall and Josh Clarke as Director and Music Director for this great show so we greatly look forward to another bonanza from our combined talents of Dio and Dilworth. Auditions will be held on 5 and 6 December.

Careers

Year 13 Leavers 2016

The transition from secondary to tertiary education can often be a very stressful time for students. Some students may need assistance if they find they are not accepted into their preferred degree option or there may be unexpected changes to plans that require additional help.

Liz Morris, Career Development Services Director will be unavailable during Term 4 and over the school holidays due to ongoing medical treatment. However, Grace Birdsall will be checking emails regularly over the summer, especially when the external exam results become available, so students can still expect support after they leave Diocesan at the beginning of next year. Mrs Birdsall can be reached on [email protected]
