GREEtINGS MEMBERS~I would first like to say that our hearts go out to our East Coast friends that have been devastated by hurricane Sandy . The images of destruction were beyond belief . Our thoughts and good wishes go to all in hurricane Sandy’s path . The AWC joined other parent clubs in making a donation to the AKC Humane Fund targeted to assist organizations that provide support and services for dogs and owners faced with the challenges of natural disasters .
The biggest club business this month is the annual Membership Dues reminder . The Dues Notice is printed on page 7 of this newsletter . Members may either pay by PayPal or send your dues to the club treasurer, Gail Boyd . Her address is on the dues notice . Please also consider making a donation to two important independent Whippet organizations, The Whippet Health Foundation and WRAP (Whippet Rescue and Placement) . Their work is vital to the well-being of our breed . Donations should be sent directly to their perspective treasurers .
On another note, the American Kennel Club is revising the AKC Complete Dog Book and has asked all parent clubs to be involved in the process . Our committee of Karen Lee, Dr. Lisa Costello and Bo Bengtson is hard at work reviewing our current entry and will work on a revision with updated photos . We look forward to seeing their finished product .
president’s messageI would like to thank Mary Dukes for serving as our Judges Education Coordinator for quite a few years . She will be stepping down from the position at the end of 2012 . Mary has been invaluable in this position, most significantly coordinating our judge’s education at the National each year . She also took the lead in the creation of our new Illustrated Standard, which is proving to be an excellent tool for prospective new judges and breeders . Mary you will be missed!
AWC website updates and changes have been made recently . Be sure you visit the website for current information . A website redesign has been in the works for some time, and after some setbacks is now proceeding forward .
November is the month to be thankful for our many blessings . Of course our wonderful Whippets are at the top of the list, bringing so much joy to our lives . Enjoy some rest and relaxation with your Whippet crew over the holidays .
Please join me in welcoming new members Elizabeth Campbell, Betty Carroll, Sara Krieger, Lexie Rogers, Barbara Rupert and Kim & Tim Tucker .
Happy Thanksgiving!
David
dEaR REadERS~
editor’s notesI hope none of you on the East Coast were seriously impacted by Hurricane Sandy and, if you were, that you’re well on the way back to normal .
I just watched the National Dog Show on TV yesterday and there was AWC Board Member Karen Lee in the Hound group line-up, looking spiffy with her lovely brindle and white Whippet . It’s always such a treat to see someone you know right there on the TV machine!
All of you who are planning a trip to Oregon in April will find lots of information in this issue . Be sure if you haven’t already made your room reservations, that you get busy and do so asap . It’s a charming hotel in a beautiful setting and you don’t want to miss out on the experience . And see the website at www.awc2013.com for more information .
Our December issue will be wrapped up before the Christmas holiday, so if you’re someone who sends things toward the
middle of the month, don’t wait too long if you want to make it in time . Remember, our deadline for ad submissions is the 1st of the month for that month’s issue .

SHOW REPORtEugene NationalYou will find lots of info in this issue of The Whippet News about the upcoming National in Eugene, Oregon from April 21st thru the 27th, 2013 . You can also go to the website at www.awc2013.com and order many things from there through PayPal .
One of our goals this year is to have everything available to purchase on one page and one cart to add to, with one exception . The logo items will be available soon on the website but will be handled by Debbie Cole, Whippet Crossing and all orders will go to her .
Gilberts K-9 Seminars is donating a wonderful book, K-9 Structure & Terminology, for the Best Junior Handler at the National this coming year .
New AWC Delegate The AKC Delegate Obedience, Tracking, and Agility (OTA) Committee has invited us to designate a club member to join the AKC Companion Events Group List . The primary purposes of the List is to keep Clubs informed about changes in AKC Companion Events Policies and Regulations, and to provide a forum that allows Clubs to share ideas about making Companion Events more successful . The List is intended for discussion and information exchange . Our National Obedience and Rally Chairman, Irene Mullauer, has agreed to join this group and keep the AWC informed of changes and issues that come up in this Forum .
Thank you Irene for stepping up for this job!

2012 aWC SOUtHERN SPECIaltyWith the conclusion of the 2012 AWC Southern Specialty, I complete my two-year service as Show Chair . Please join me in welcoming Ms. Christine Heath as the new Show Chair of the 2013 AWC Southern Specialty . Christine is experienced in show events, very organized, and personable . I am sure she will perform with excellence!
As outgoing Show Chair, I would like to recognize key individuals and organizations that made the 2012 Specialty a successful venue . Jan Lucree of the North Georgia Hound Association and Cindy Scott of the AWC were major assets in the organization and groundwork for this specialty . Kathleen Steen of the Atlanta Kennel Club also was involved in processing paperwork . The major glitch this year was a failure of Onofrio to include the dedication of the 2012 AWC Southern Specialty to Shirri Peak and list the trophies and prizes in the premium and catalog (even though this information was sent to them on four different occasions) . However, the trophies and prizes were presented as usual to remedy this oversight and everyone seemed to enjoy the event .
The 2012 AWC Southern Specialty Sweepstakes began on Saturday morning under the discerning eye of Stephanie Mason Dycha (Mason Hill Whippets) . Stephanie did a wonderful job evaluating a quality lineup of Whippets . The fused glass trophies and Whippet nightlights, designed and produced by Lisa Saunders, were well received . In addition, Lisa hand made tug toys that were presented to each puppy and dog beds for each veteran!
Judy Lowther (Pfyre Whippets) judged the regular classes and evaluated each Whippet with a critical eye for detail . She methodically worked through the classes in selecting her winners . Judy was assisted by the ring steward, Gino, who anticipated ribbon and trophy presentations while keeping track of the various classes . First place winners of the regular classes received a custom trophy plate . This year, the 2012 Southern Specialty and trophy plates were dedicated to Shirri Peak and depicted a pair of her coursing Whippets and a Borzoi in the background . Although Shirri was known for Sighthound performance events, she also appreciated conformation, quality breeding, and was instrumental in keeping the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association viable when its existence was in doubt . The 2012 logo was co-designed by Yvonne Sovereign and Chris Durance Watkins and then beautifully painted by Yvonne . The lettering on the logo was done by Mary Huff of Tailsindesign . The larger porcelain trophies for major wins were also decorated with the 2012 custom logo and were produced by Bob Riffle of Innovative Creations in Buford, GA .
I would like to thank the following AWC members and organizations for assisting me in financing the trophies: the membership of the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association; Mallory and Chuck Ballard (Arborlea Whippets); Gail, Chuck, and Jenny Boyd (Ableaim Whippets); and Kathy and Steven Armato (DeSud Whippets) . As usual, the raffle generated considerable financial support for the AWC Southern Specialty this year . David Watkins served as the master of the raffle table and did a tremendous job organizing the offerings and selling tickets . Many people donated items to this event including Cris Horne, Fuzzywumpets, Mallory Ballard, Gail Boyd, Lisa Saunders, members of the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association, and many others . The original Whippet artwork by Chris Horne and a stunning collar by Fuzzywumpets were especially popular with the purchasers of raffle tickets .
As the judging was in the final stages of completion, AGORA and “the Greek guys” served a tasty luncheon that was enjoyed by all .
In closing, it has been an honor to serve as Show Chair for the 2011 and 2012 AWC Southern Specialties . I would like to extend my thanks to all of those individuals and organizations that assisted me in making these events user friendly and memorable . I also extend my best wishes to Christine Heath as she “takes the reins” for the 2013 AWC Southern Specialty!
Sincerely, Ken Latimer 2012 AWC Southern Specialty Show Chair

REPORt FROM tHE CGC EvalUatORWe will once again be offering the CGC Testing at the National in 2013 . The tests performed will be the same as in the past but AKC has made some changes that I wanted to share with you . Starting in January 2013, as the result of frequent, ongoing requests from proud CGC dog owners, Canine Good Citizen® will become an official AKC title!
This means that CGC can be listed on a dog’s record and the owner may use the suffix, “CGC” after the dog’s name . The dog owner will have the option of choosing between a CGC Certificate Only ($8 .00 as it is now) or CGC as an Official Title listed on the dog’s record . This includes a certificate and the processing fee for the title is $20 .
AKC will grandfather dogs who have already earned the CGC award (back to January 2001) if their owners wish to apply for the title . These owners will need to fill out a form to submit along with the $20 processing fee . You can go to www .akc .org to download the form or I would be happy to help you out and send you one .
AKC S .T .A .R . Puppy remains as it has been; it is not a title .
How soon can you apply for the title? AKC: We will not start entering titles until January 2, 2013 . For dogs tested between now and January, the dog owner has 3 options:
1 . Submit the CGC Test/Registration Form now for the CGC Title option ($20: CGC will be added to the dog’s title record, owner will receive a certificate), understanding that your check will be cashed now but the CGC Test/Registration form will not be processed until January 2, 2013 .
2 . Submit the CGC Test/Registration form before January 1, 2013 choosing the $8: Certificate only option, and have the CGC Test/Registration form processed now . A Grandfathering form can be submitted at a later date if the owner decides later to apply for the official title . This option means that the dog owner will pay $8 now for the Certificate Only, and $20 when the choice is made later to apply for the official title . A new certificate will be sent when the CGC title is added to the dog’s record .
3 . Take the CGC test before January 2, 2013 and hold the paperwork until January if the owner is choosing the title option . This means that the owner will only pay the $20 title processing fee .
I would like to encourage everyone to think about giving this a try . If you have ever stopped by and watched the testing you see that we have lots of fun . If you have any questions regarding this please don’t hesitate to contact me .
Irene Mullauer, Mull4291@yahoo .com AKC CGC Evaluator

We are delighted to welcome you back to eugene this next april.
if you didn’t come the first time, maybe you have heard what you missed
and plan to come this time. if so, you are in for a treat.
We agreed to do the national for a second time in five years because of

location and the welcoming and enthusiastic hotel staff.
the hotel has been redecorated from top to bottom within the last year.
this includes the bar and the dining room. you will find all new carpet,
paint, and fixtures in every room in the hotel.
that means guest rooms as well as the public rooms.

14 | THE WHIPPET NEWS NOVEMBER 2012
Dear AWC Members, National Specialty Competitors, and Whippet Friends,
It’s that time again – the time to start thinking with excitement towards the 2013 AWC National Specialty in Eugene Ore-gon. This National is on track to be one of our best events ever, and beautiful trophies are part of the mix that will come together to make AWC 2013 a most elegant and memorable National Specialty!
Our trophies will be Yvonne Sovereign original paintings for all the major awards, including an incredible custom portrait of the BOB winner and the same of the BOB Lure Coursing winner. For all of our class wins and placements, we will have AWC 2013 Logo plates and beautiful rosettes. We are happy to say that all the performance events at the National will have equally beautiful trophies as the conformation side of things.
We are asking for your financial support to sponsor all our lovely trophies. Through the incredible generosity of many of the 2012 award and class winners, and a successful social media campaign, we are already well on our way with donations. We have the following awards & classes available for your sponsorship:
Conformation
Select Bitch ($85 donation), 1 Award of Merit ($60), 6 Dog Classes @ $70/ea, and 6 Bitch classes @ $70/ea. We also have one Veteran Sweepstakes class available ( 12+ Dog) for a $50 donation.
Performance
2nd HIT & High Score in NR Classes in Obedience Trial ($80 donation each), plus 7 Obedience Classes @ $70/ea. We have one Rally Class (Excellent A) available for a $70 donation. For the ASFA Lure Trial, we have High Score in the Open & FCh Stakes ($80 donation each), as well as 2 Open Flights & 4 FCh Flights available for a $70 donation each.
Donations of any amount to the General Trophy Fund are appreciated! Regional Whippet Clubs and organizations are en-couraged to sponsor an award or class.
Please contact Guin or Kim for the most up-to-date info on exactly what awards/classes are still available for sponsorship. A PayPal button is up on the www.awc2013.com homepage for your convenience.
Thanks in advance for your help in making 2013’s trophies great (and fully funded!),
Sincerely,

The Wrap reportSavING CaSH It is not uncommon for WRAP to receive correspondence from shelters and other rescue groups asking for help . But it is rare that a Veterinarian makes a desperate plea for help because he/she disagrees with an owner’s directive to euthanize a dog . When this recently happened, WRAP took immediate notice .
On October 9, we received the following email: “I’m a Veterinarian at a local Animal Hospital and I have a difficult situation . I recently determined that a 4-month old Whippet has a portosystemic shunt (liver shunt) . The owners refuse to take him to a specialist for an ultrasound to determine whether or not he’s a surgical candidate, and they refuse to pay for therapeutic foods and supplements that could potentially provide this dog with a good quality of life . They are planning to bring him in for euthanasia on Saturday . I hate the prospect of euthanizing a dog that has a potentially treatable condition, and I hate contacting you knowing you get pleas for help like this all the time, but I can’t just put this young dog to sleep without at least trying to save him .”
A phone discussion, test results and photographs followed . How could WRAP not at least try to help this beautiful puppy? After contacting WRAP Board Members, it was decided WRAP would accept Cash for further evaluation . I contacted the Veterinarian on Wednesday and she contacted the owners to see if they would relinquish Cash to WRAP, rather than euthanize him . At 9:30 that evening, the family turned him over to WRAP’s care and they were happy he was getting a chance . And that is how Cash’s journey with WRAP began .
Cash was put on Science Diet l/d and started on Lactulose right away . The improvement was amazing . He became
a normal acting energetic puppy almost immediately . I took him to our specialty clinic for an ultrasound to see if he was a surgical candidate and it was determined he was . At that time, WRAP committed to giving Cash the chance he deserved . I made arrangements to have his surgery done at the University of Missouri Veterinary Hospital on October 30 and off we went . After consulting with the Vets at the University and saying goodbye to Cash for possibly the last time, I headed home .
This is a high-risk surgery and there was a chance he would not survive it, but we had to try .
He came through his surgery with flying colors . Cash’s liver biopsy did not show any abnormal vessels and the rest of his internal organs appeared normal to the surgeon . He only had to stay in intensive care for two days instead of the “up to a week” that I was originally told . I picked him up on November1st to start his long recuperation . He is supposed to be kept calm and quiet for 6 weeks . How they expect that to happen, since he is feeling better than he ever has in his short life, is beyond me . All he wants to do is run and play and be a puppy . Sitting in a crate or on the couch is not his idea of fun . Never heard of portosystemic shunts? This is a very serious hereditary condition that has practically wiped out several breeds . Because of Cash, we have learned that it is more prevalent in Whippets than realized . Portosystemic shunts are blood vessels that do not close down shortly before or after birth as the puppy’s liver begins to work . If the shunt does not close down it is called an intrahepatic shunt . These are usually not surgical candidates and have to be treated with diet and medication . In other puppies, a blood vessel outside the liver develops abnormally and remains open after the internal liver shunt closes . This is called a congenital extrahepatic shunt and can be surgically repaired . Eighty-five percent of dogs are clinically normal 4-8 weeks after surgery and can lead a healthy normal life . About 15% still continue to have problems because the tiny blood vessels inside the liver were also abnormal .

16 | THE WHIPPET NEWS NOVEMBER 2012
These dogs have to be managed with a protein restricted diet and Lactulose for life . Clinical signs seen in puppies can include small stature, poor muscle development, behavior abnormalities, seizures and quiet demeanor . In some puppies, the signs are associated with eating proteins . They seem to feel worse after they have been fed . Some dogs show no signs until they are older when they develop bladder and kidney infections and stones . Bile acid levels are extremely elevated in affected dogs .
Because this is an extremely hereditary problem that has devastated many breeds, the only proactive, responsible means to prevent perpetuating this condition is to spay or neuter any affected puppy as well as the sire and dam . If a puppy is diagnosed with an extrahepatic liver shunt, by all means contact your puppy buyers from over the years and let them know the relation of their dog to the carrier . It does not mean they should not breed their dog or you should replace it, just be aware it is in their pedigree . If someone should have a puppy that has any symptoms, it will at least give the owner a starting point for diagnosis . Working together to prevent this condition from impacting the health of our breed is very important .
Fortunately WRAP is in a financial position, at this time, to help save Cash . But as a national non-profit organization, we help MANY dogs and many of these dogs require costly veterinary care . It would take only a few Whippets with significant health issues or a large puppy mill seizure to decimate available funds . Like any charitable organization, our goal is to continue to build our financial foundation so that we never have to say no to any Whippet in need . Given the cost of Cash’s surgery, I am hosting a fundraiser for contributions to help defer Cash’s medical bills .
Cash’s story and our fundraising event create awareness of WRAPs efforts to help every Whippet in need . If you can help with a donation to WRAP in Cash’s name, it would be greatly appreciated .
Thank you .
Libby Rice, WRAP Regional Advisor

A presentation of... WinDrYDer VersatilityBobbie and I started with Dobermans . Bobbie was still putting Obedience titles on Kelly, a rescue, at age 13 . She made it to 15 years 8 months . She was the oldest performing Doberman at a National Specialty in Texas the year she was 14 .
We got our first Whippet , Reggie, (BIF, FC, UCDX, UAGII, Pennyworth Red Rabbit, CD, MC, NA, NAJ, LCM2, CGC, TT, AVX) in 1990 from Barbara Henderson who owned his
sire . She forgot to include the warning that Whippets can be addictive . We now have seven . Reggie also liked to dress up and ride motorcycles . He was the inspiration for our logo that Yvonne Sovereign created for us from a photo of Reggie on a motorcycle .
Reggie introduced us to Lure Coursing (also addictive) . He has placed in the Triathlon top ten . In 1995 Bobbie saw a brindle puppy that was being walked at a lure trial by Daphne Bell . Even though Calvin Perry was going to keep him, Bobbie managed to talk him out of that puppy . We named him Calvin from the comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes .” When Calvin Perry talks about Calvin, he is quick to point out that he wasn’t named after him . Calvin is our first Dual Champion and went on to get 16 titles . (BIF, DC, UGRCH, UAGII, UCD, Appraxin Callaban Kristobel, CD, MC, LCM3, V-FCH, NA, NAJ, OJP, NAP, CGC, TT, CAVX) . Calvin was the Triathlon winner at the 2004 AWC National .
Calvin flying—and his kids, Travis, Holly, Tyler, Ashley and Nigel proving that obedience training pays off.
Since we wanted a fast coursing dog, we bred Calvin to a Champion Race bitch . This produced Holly, (UAGII, UR02, HWYRUN HEART OF THE STORM, NA, NAJ, NAP, NJP, RA, CGC, TT) our fastest dog who doesn’t course or race but has managed numerous
agility and rally titles—with the slowest times . Sadly, we lost Holly recently to a backyard collision accident .
Holly’s brother Nigel (now UALCH, UR03, Highway Run Satori of Xzora, FCH, SC, RE, BN, CGC, TT) was later given to us by his owner (Marty Kohl) when she was in the last stages of liver cancer and wanted us to place him in a home that would take advantage of his smarts . He fit in so well that we told her that we would keep him . He, too, has multiple titles including a BEST ALTERED IN SHOW at the UKC Premier with a large entry .
We also got a puppy from Harry and Cindy VanVliet, Shannon, (MBIF, FC, UCH, UACH, URO3, UCD, Fermanagh WGASA Why Not, MC, OA, OAJ, OAP, OJP, RE, BN, LCM2, V-LCM, CGC, TT, AV) . Shannon’s mother Wynona was #1 Coursing the year before Shannon was born . Calvin
was #1 until September that year when we discovered Agility . He wound up #3 . We later bred Calvin to Shannon, expecting good coursers . We kept Tyler & Travis from that litter of four (see notes on them later) . Shannon earned her V-LCM the month before she turned 12 and later earned her RE rally title . She twice placed in the Triathlon Top Ten .
Still looking for good coursing dogs, we got Nikki from Donna Richards at TNT Kennels . Nikki’s name with titles is BIE, UGRCH, UACH, UR03, UCD, TNT’s LaFemme Nikita, CD, MC, LCM, V-FCH, AX, AXJ, OAP OJP, RE, CGC, TT, AV . She placed 2nd twice in the Triathlon . She’s currently working on her rally RAE and other agility titles at age 11 .
by Fred Lutz
24 | THE WHIPPET NEWS NOVEMBER 2012
When Sharyn Hutchens approached us to use Calvin to breed to her Diamond, we liked the Nevedith background with grandparents that won or went reserve BIS at Crufts . Hmmm . Maybe we can get a great show dog . Sharon liked the result so well that she did a repeat breeding . It really worked . We got Ashley from the first breeding .
She has gone on to become GCH, CH, UGRCH, UAGII, UR03, UCD, Timbreblue Windrydr Biker Girl, CD, MC, RE, FCH, NA, NAJ, NAP, NJP, CGC, TT, CAV . When she got her Grand Championship, she was Ranked #54 in July 2011 . We decided to take a run at competing in the Top 20 at this year’s specialty . We almost made it . She was only five places out! She finished #14 in Grand Champion Points and earned Bronze Level . She’s also currently working on her rally RAE–before and after the birth of a single puppy we’re calling Ziva, Windryder’s Biker Babe .
Tyler (GCH, CH, UGRCH, UAGII, URO1, Windryder’s Full Throttle, FCh, SC, BN, RN, OA, OAJ, OJP, NAP, CGC, TT) got 10 points toward a Championship quickly but we tried for 2 years to get the majors . We had to pull him from 42 shows because it wasn’t a major or the major broke . Our Handlers, Aaron Wilkerson and Russella Bowen suggested that we send him north with Phoebe Booth to get the majors . She got them through the back door as there were no majors for dogs but there was for bitches . It crossed over twice and he was BOB . Since we had already paid the entry fee, we decided to show him as a Special the next day and he went BOB again . That put him 1/3 of the way toward a Grand Championship . For 2012 he finished his Grand Championship . He was #14 in Grand Champion Points at that point . Since Bobbie’s job was terminated the end of November 2011, we have gone into “economy mode” and haven’t shown him since March, but as of Oct . 20, he is still in the Top 100 at #95 . He has placed in the Triathlon Top Ten . News Flash! He completed his UCD and is now eligible for AWC’s Champion Award of Versatility .

We are AKC Breeders of Merit . We bred Ashley to Yvonne Sovereign’s Myles, CH Sowagla Quick Silver To Taejaan . We chose him since his father’s side of the pedigree is similar to Ashley’s with Sportingfields and Nevedith . The Mother’s side is Australian . Taejaan Whippets are consistent top winners . Our own Claire Newcomb has judged them and put them up in Australia . She also gave Myles an Award of Merit at the 2007 National .
Clair with Bobbie, Cindy Scott and Travis
Travis (BIF, UGRCH, UAGII, URO3, UCD, Windryder’s Americade Cruiser, MC, FCH, RE, NA, OAJ, OAP, OJP, CGC, TT, AV) is the other part of the “T” brothers that Shannon and Calvin produced . He’s currently working on his AKC CD, as well as more agility titles .
With Tyler’s pending CAV, Bobbie has earned nine versatility titles, three of them in the same year . They include a CAVX, an AVX, three CAVs and four AVs .
I am very proud of Bobbie’s accomplishments . At 63, she still sometimes runs six dogs at agility trials . Simply amazing .
Other notes: Bobbie has been collecting dog figurines since she was a little girl and now has 1,800+ on display in our house .
This is one of 16 display cases . It contains only Sighthounds . The whole collection is like a museum . She has everything from the 25-cent Scottie magnets from a vending machine on the PA Turnpike to a replica of the War Dog Memorial Doberman called “Always Faithful” by Susan Bahary . Susan invited us to attend the ceremony at Quantico Marine Base for the dedication of another life size replica . Other noteworthy figurines include Victor, the RCA dog with his phonograph, two Norman Rockwell’s, Little Orphan Annie and Sandy, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, Spuds McKenzie, the Marine Corp mascot, the hood ornament from a Mack truck, a Whippet car hood ornament, Pluto, Goofy, Pedro the Chihuahua, and Royal Dalton’s Doberman Storm . Others depict search and rescue, obedience training, puppies playing (tearing up the couch), a Greyhound playing 45 MPH couch potato, retrievers with their catch, the 100% chocolate Whippet heads created by Mike Terry, and the AWC Logo in metal sculpture .

more from Abroad...FROM FINlaNd…Lori Lawrence and Molly Rule-Steele judged the Finnish Whippet Club’s national specialty in June . The weekend consisted of two shows, starting with an “Open Show” on Saturday, where Molly judged dogs and Lori judged bitches and BOB . There were 51 dogs, 51 bitches and 9 puppies . BIS was the bitch Ch . Twyborn Grey Gardens, with BOS to Ch . Twyford Big Ben, both from Sweden .
At the national specialty the next day, Lori judged dogs and put up Ch . C’mere Jöröjukka, who had been reserve best dog the previous day, switching places with Big Ben, who was runner-up at the national . Molly Rule-Steele put up the bitch who had also won the day before, Ch . Twyborn Grey Gardens, but awarded BIS to the dog . Runner-up best bitch both days was the veteran, Ch . Softouch Pinquana .
The National SBIS winner is sired by Canadian export Ch . Forgetmenot Flying Star . The Twyborn dogs are of mostly Scandinavian breeding, although Big Ben, who was also BOS at the Swedish national specialty a month later, is a grandson of Ch . Starline’s Reign On . Other U .S . breeding among the top placements included exports Sportingfields Jamaican Me Crazy, Ch . Aberdeen Remarkable In Paris and Ch . Fanfare’s Special Export, as well as offspring of Ch . Fanfare’s Too Cool To Care, Ch . Bohem Time Flies and Ch . Leyenda’s Happy Days .
The photo below shows the National SBIS winner, Ch . C’mere Jöröjukka, to the left, with BOS Ch . Twyborn Grey Gardens to the right, together with judges Molly Rule-Steele and Lori Lawrence .
RUSSIa…The photos printed in the specialty report from Russia in last month’s issue of The WN gave a more negative impression of the dogs than intended . The weather made good photos almost impossible to take, but here’s a picture of the BOB winner, Ch . Tiopliy Veter Kazimir Malevich (above), taken in younger days, as well as a photo of the winning Junior dog and bitch (below), taken at the show during a break in the rain . Right is the dog, All In The Golden Afternoon, and left his litter sister, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland . They are both sired by U .S . export Ch . Aberdeen Remarkable in Paris .
I would be remiss in not reporting the success of another U .S . export, Charlamar Redcliffe Waltz Time, who has won Best Puppy in Show several times in Russia and most recently won Specialty BOB from the Junior class in St . Petersburg under Danish breeder-judge Rudi Brandt, as well as BOB and Group 1st under AKC judge Raymond Filburn . “Hannah” is owned by Marina Slepneva, who picked up her new puppy at the AWC National Specialty in April, and was bred by Charlotte Lee and Nancy Doucette .

...aNd SWEdENIn my report from the Swedish national specialty in late July I mentioned the Best Breeder’s Group competition, which does not resemble anything we have in the U .S . Twenty different breeders had entered a team of four homebred dogs each . Not all competed, but the winning team from the Twyborn kennel was one of the most impressive I’ve seen, consisting of four adult males from four different (but related) homebred litters, all different shades of fawn or brindle .
Pictured above is a photo of the group . Breeder Michael Vikström is not in the picture; he was walking on crutches and was not able to handle any of the dogs himself .

Author’s note The article about the Russian specialty resulted in (so far) three nice letters from Russian exhibitors . Below is a correction from the show chairman, Natalya Chubarova:
Hello Bo,
It was unexpectedly pleasant to see your article for “The Whippet News” which was shared by Marina Slepneva on our National Club site. I appreciate your kind words about Moscow and the people participants of the show including me. I think this article will be a good ground to continue the discussion of the results of the show and for your answers to the numerous questions on our forum.
Dear Bo, I’m afraid you’ve imputed someone else’s fame to me. The name of our kennel is translated as “Red Arrow.” Krasnaya Zvezda, which means “Red Star” is the oldest Soviet and now Russian breeding center founded, as it seems to me, in the 1920s. It was founded as a Red Army Unit. Unfortunatelly, I am not very keen on the history of this kennel, but I’m absolutely sure that it was the place where the two wonderful Russian breeds were created – the “Black Russian Terrier” and the “Moscow Watch Dog.”
With a lot of words of thanks, Natalya Chubarova Moscow, Russia
