SUMMER KNOT PURSE We will be cutting out fabric for the purse I showed at our April meeting. We want everyone to make one to sell at our booth at the Buena Park Summer Concerts. We will provide fabric for your first purse, then you may cut out one or more from your own fabric. We will be demonstrating how to complete the purse at our general meeting. The pattern will be provided to all who come to the May meeting. Two yards of coordinating fabric can make 2 purses. Bring sharp scissors as both fabrics will be cut at once, on fold (that's 4 layers). After you cut out your fabrics, you may watch the demonstration, then shop the Brown Bag auction.

Acacia Member Receives Guinness World Record Certificate

Sonia Das is pleased to announce that she is officially part of a Guinness World Record. On January 31, 2016, Mother India Crochet Queens (MICQ) unveiled the largest crocheted blanket in the world in Chennai, India. The blanket MICQ was over 120,000 square feet. More than 1100 Indian women from 25 countries participated and Sonia was proud to crochet a few blankets to add to this effort. All of the 8,035 individual blankets were distributed to 50 charities. She received her certificate in April.

moment to vote by absentee ballot (printed in the newsletter) if you are unable to attend the meeting to vote in person.

To continue having a variety of fun, education and interesting events for our members, we need more volunteers to help with different committees. We would love to see more of you, especially the new members, get involved by volunteering for a board position. New members are absolutely welcome!

Don’t forget to renew your membership and stay tuned for an exciting year ahead. I look forward to thanking the outgoing board at the June meeting before welcoming the new board.

SCCQG 2016 Quiltfest Oasis Palm Spring Exhibit

Presented by Mancuso Show Management

“Capturing the Colors of California - Hues, Tints, Shades, and

Tones”

HUES are the fundamental pigments that identity the full gamut of colors. TINTS are merely any colors with white added. SHADES are humbly any color with black added. TONES are initiated by greying down hues with both white & black.

As you travel around the highways, byways, unknown locations, and surprising vistas in

the state of California, what colors are unique to that particular spot? Is it the blues

of the oceans, the greens of the forests, the neutral tones of the desert, the oranges

of the poppy fields, the varied colors of the mountains or a cityscape? There is a

continuous difference in the colors affected by the surrounding environment,

temperature and the weather conditions from one moment to the next. Select a color

scheme of your choice inspired by that particular place in California. Next, create a

quilt utilizing the chosen colors. What traditional or contemporary block(s), appliqué

pattern, or mixed quilting techniques could be used to enhance the colors? The quilt

can be traditional, modern, or an art quilt.

Parameters: Create a quilt based on the theme “Capturing the Colors of California.”

The entire quilt, oriented horizontal, must measure 24” horizontally and 20” vertically, including

binding. Embellishments must not protrude more than ½” from the surface of the quilt.

The quilt must be made with fabric and quilted either by hand or machine or both. It must consist of

three layers, and be either bound or closed along the edges.

On the reverse side include a label with your name, email address, mailing address, phone number,

and quilt title and the guild to which you belong. A four 4” sleeve is required.

Your entry must be free of any text or images protected by copyright, unless you have the expressed

written permission from the person or institution that holds the copyright and you provide that written

permission with your submission.

The entry form must be completely filled out including a brief statement sharing your inspiration for the

quilt linked to the theme of the challenge of no more than 150 words. Include a photograph of your

quilt with the entry form.

An entrant must be a current member of a member guild of the Southern California Council of Quilt

Guilds.

By completing a Call for Entry, you are agreeing to allow your work to be displayed for the duration of

the Festival.

Entries must be submitted by June 1, 2016. Your entry should be sent to Stephania Bommarito, 18924

Patronella Avenue, Torrance, CA 90504.

Further information to follow regarding where and when to send your quilt for collection.

If you have any questions, contact Stephania at 310-503-7989, [email protected].

This is a gentle reminder to be careful around our various sharp and pointed sewing objects and place them where they cannot slip or slide and cause injuries.

An Acacia guild member had an awful accident with her scissors at a recent sew day in April. While she wasn't "running with scissors", it was a lesson for us as quilters because we tend to take safety for granted. While working on a pillowcase, the fabric on the table slid and so did the scissors that were in the folds of the fabric. The small sharp scissors pierced her trousers and entered her left lower leg just above the knee to a depth of almost two inches (2") and the incision was about 0.5" long. There was a lot of blood from the wound. She

was very calm and requested paper towels, raised her leg and applied continuous pressure while 911 was called and they did a preliminary bandage; later at urgent care, she received two stitches and a tetanus shot. She is doing well and taking things a little easy.

Happy Birthday

Acacia

I want to say “A Big Thank You” to Barbara Mead. Last (Acacia) year while she was doing

the Tea I volunteered to do a couple of newsletters to help her out. Barbara said yes

and eventually asked me to take over the newsletter for the rest of the year. I enjoyed doing the newsletter so much I volunteered to

do it again this year. So, Barbara, thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to have

this much fun. I have really loved it.

I have a lot going on this upcoming year so I am stepping down as newsletter editor. If you would like to do this fun job please let Beth or Sonia know. You can use any software you want but if you don’t know Microsoft Publisher and want to learn it, I will be more than glad to show you how. I have a template already made but please

make it your own.
