The AYC Opti Race Team sailors escaped the cold weather in Annapolis, MD and flew to St. Petersburg, FL to compete in the Valentine’s Day Regatta. This regatta was an UDODA event where sailors try and qualify for the Team Trails. The AYC Opti Race Team consisted of Kyle Comerford, Hannah Polster, Harrison Hawk, Stephanie Houck, Gray Benson, Kyle Schwitzer, Sarah Alexander, and Charlie Lomax. The sailors saw all wind conditions at this eventwinds ranging from 7 knots to 30 knots. It was great to see the older and more experienced sailors show the way for the younger sailors. The first day of racing was “survival” mode for most of the sailors and the older and more experienced sailors cheered on the younger sailors. After the regatta, all flights were canceled due to the snow storm in Maryland so the team went to Busch Gardens as a team building activity Valentines Day Regatta IN THIS ISSUE: 420 Race team Par- ent Meeting March 12th, 6:00 pm in the Junior building.      After Christmas, several AYC sailors headed down to the Orange Bowl Youth Regatta, sailed Dec. 27‐30.  With over 300 boats competing, the Orange Bowl is the largest junior regatta in the United States. Even with all the talk of the depressed economy, the Orange Bowl continues to grow and this year was the biggest year ever for this favorite event.  Youth sailors come from around the country and the world to spend their holi‐day in sunny, warm Miami.

The AYC Junior Racing Team was there in force with Brady Stagg  and  Jack  Ortel  sailing  the  uber  competitive  Interna‐tional 420 class.   This class attracts  the  top sailors  from  the Club  420,  looking  for  a more  challenging  boat  to  start  the ramp‐up to the Olympic Classes.  With only six months in the boat, Brady and  Jack rallied hard and  finished a respectable 10th, against a  fleet of 25 boats, many of whom have been sailing International 420s for a few years.   Of the boats who bested the AYC team, many have sailed numerous regattas in Europe.

Four  AYC  duos  sailed  in  the  93‐boat  Club  420  Class. we had John Andril and Amanda Salvesen, Megan Yeigh and Ka‐

tie Scheidt, Alex Ramos and Alex Sullivan, Sammy Stagg and Austin Ortel.  This was a stacked fleet of over 90 boats all sailing hard for the coveted Orange Bowl championship.   Our results in this fleet were equally im‐pressive with John and Amanda  in 13th, Alex and Alex  in 14th, newcomers to the fleet Sammy and Austin  in 56th , and Megan and Katie in 64th.  All of our sailors had some great races and memorable moments but with a fleet this big and aggressive, the Black Flag (automatic DSQ for being over the line) came out on most starts and our sailors had their fair share of Black Flag disqualifications.  We love to see that aggressive style prov‐ing that they want it and want to fight for the front row at every turn.  Needless to say, once the ice thaws on the Chesapeake, we will be running a great deal of starting practice to work towards getting the over early bug out of the AYC team’s systems.

Next up for the team was the US Sailing Youth World Qualifier, Jan. 15‐18, in Clearwater, Fla.  This is where the best of  the best get  together  to sail  for  the coveted Youth Worlds  team.   Some call  this  the under 18 Olympic trials as only one sailor per class gets to go.  We had three teams at this event with Brady Stagg and Fletcher Sims sailing to a 4th place finish in the boys fleet of the I 420 and Patrick Floyd and Jack Ortel placing 5th also  sailing  I 420s.   Scott Houck went  the  Laser Radial  route and  finished 14th  in  this very  competitive class.

It  is amazing that these sailors are striving so hard for excellence and you can see the disappointment  in their faces with some of these results.  Yet each one takes home valuable lessons that they can use for future sailing.  Isn’t it great that sailing is a LIFETIME sport and every lesson these guys and gals learn will bode well for them  in their future sailing.   Thanks to Annapolis Yacht Club for supporting a great  junior program that allows our sailors to travel to these events.  Without your support we could not do this.

Hey AYC Juniors! Contact Jay ([email protected]) if you want to be part of the AYC Team to compete in the inaugural National Youth Match Race Clinic and Regatta. It’ll be hosted by Balboa Yacht Club on May 14-16 in Corona del Mar, Calif. We’ll need 3-4 juniors who can steer, trim main, jib, spin, and handle a spin pole on a Governor’s Cup 20 (Google it!).

The event is organized to attract youth match racing talent from across the United States, with the winner of this event get-ting an automatic berth in the 2010 Governor’s Cup International Junior Match Race Championship with other top finishers to be considered by the Governor’s Cup Selection Committee for the invitation only event. -- Full details: www.balboayachtclub.com
