Principal’s Message
Thank you to all students, parents, and community members for their support during the first
weeks of school. We could not have had such a smooth beginning without your cooperation. We
are very excited to be back and are looking forward to a great school year.
We want to make you aware of two important initiatives this school year which were covered in
detail at LHS Open House on August 25.
First, we are pleased to be in the second year of our implementation of Naviance Succeed and
Family Connection, web-based college & career planning software designed especially for
students and parents. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you and your child
can use to help in making decisions about colleges and careers. Family Connection is linked
with College Planner, a service used in the guidance office to track and analyze data about
college and career plans. College Planner provides up-to-date information that is specific to
Lakewood High School.
Family Connection will allow you and your child to:
Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete on-line
surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and
careers.
Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to
actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted
in the past.
Sign up for college visits – Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to
attend those sessions.
To visit our school’s Family Connection site, use your web browser to connect to
http://connection.naviance.com/lakewoodhs or look for the link on the LHS Home Page and
under the “For Parents” tab.
Passwords and detailed instructions on how to login and navigate Naviance are being mailed to
your home if you did not pick yours up at Open House. If you have any questions, please
contact the guidance department at 216-529-4032. The guidance department will be holding a
Naviance Parent and Student help session in Lecture Hall 2 Tuesday, August 30 at 7:00pm.
Secondly, again this year on October 19, all sophomores and interested juniors will be taking
the PSAT during the school day free of charge. Students interested in taking the ASVAB exam
will take it on the same day. October 19 will be a modified schedule day. Please see details
below.
The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are:
To receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college
study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from
additional study or practice
To see how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others
applying to college
To enter the competition for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (grade 11)
To help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and
the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
To receive information from colleges when you check "yes" to Student Search Service
We are very excited this year to begin adding more tools so students and parents can begin
exploring college and career options at any grade level. Please read this edition carefully for
more events to help parents and students on the road to college readiness.

Superintendent’s Message
I am thrilled to be kicking off the 2016-2017 school year with three beautiful new elementary buildings!
Students and staff at Grant, Lincoln and Roosevelt Elementaries will now have the same quality learning
environments that the rest of our elementary students do. And next year, with the completion of the
additions at Lakewood High School, our Facilities Master Plan will finally be complete. I am proud to be
part of a district where we all work hard to accomplish the common goal of providing the best education
for our youth and to be part of a community that supports public education so strongly!
Completing our Facilities Master Plan is one of our District Goals set out for this school year. Below is a
link to the complete list of goals set by our Board of Education. I know with our dedicated and talented
staff, our hard working students, and our supportive families, we can all work together to meet these
goals. I wish everyone a wonderful and productive school year!

Guidance News
Naviance Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you can use to plan for college
and a career. Family Connection is linked with Naviance, a service that we use in our guidance
office to track and analyze data about college and career plans, so it provides up-to-date
information that is specific to our school. Family Connection allows families to:
Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete online
surveys, and manage timelines for making decisions about colleges & careers
Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to
historical data from our school for past students who have applied and been admitted
Research hundreds of careers and career clusters, and take career assessments
Create plans for the future – Create goals and complete tasks assigned to you by the
school to better prepare yourself for your future college and career goals
Family Connection also lets us share information with you about upcoming meetings and
events, local scholarship opportunities, and other resources for college and career
information.
**If you did not receive your Naviance log-in at Open House, please contact the Guidance
Department for this information. Freshmen will be learning more about Naviance in their College
and Career Readiness class. We encourage sophomores and juniors to start exploring! Here is
the link for Lakewood High School: http://connection.naviance.com/lakewoodhs
There will be a Naviance help session next Tuesday, August 30th at 7pm in Lecture 2 if you
need help setting up your parent or student account.
Schedules can only be changed if there was an error or class adjustment. As we approach the
second week of school, classes will be added to a student’s transcript and can only be removed
through a parent and teacher meeting and through a principal’s discretion. A reminder that
students should be enrolled in at least 6 classes each semester to be considered full-time.
Freshman Guidance News
I hope you are all off to a great start! If you have questions about your schedule or need to talk
to your counselor, please make an appointment. There will be a sign-up sheet outside my office
where you can fill in your name. Parents feel free to email or call at any time and I will address
your concerns at my earliest convenience. Please remind your students to show up every day
and be engaged in their learning. And a friendly reminder to all 9th graders:
Make it a great year!

Lakewood High School PTA
Join us in making a difference for LHS Students
LHS PTA is looking forward to another exciting and productive year of supporting LHS students
with our PTA programs. After last year's success, we have voted to continue the Teacher Grant
Program. Join LHS PTA to be on the committee and have a voice where the monies are spent.
Last year’s donations were varied: microscopes, math programs, CPR certification, electronics
equipment for Westshore, Barnstormers, and the Social Studies Dept. for a Mock Election. With
a group voice, we have the ability to make change such as the evaluation of the dress code.
Additionally, last year PTA stepped up to help create more 'spirit' in the building: from a pep rally
to the senior hall of fame. Help PTA with creating more spirit events and lasting LHS memories!
These are a few of the new opportunities to get involved, as well as our continued support of
Fresh Start, H20, Teacher Conference Dinners, Student Council, scholarship funding, Senior
Reception and After Prom. LHS PTA support can be found behind the scenes making a difference.
Please join and consider an additional donation to the Painless Project. There's no work involved
and your support goes directly back to these great programs. It is only with your support through
Membership and the Painless Project that we can make a difference.
Our first meeting is: Tuesday, September 27th, 7:00pm, in the Ranger Café
We hope to see you there. Feel free to email us at [email protected] or through
our new Facebook page - Lakewood High School PTA – for questions, thoughts, concerns or
ideas.
Your LHS PTA Officers for this year are:
President – Karen Lee
1st Vice President – Melissa Harper
2nd Vice President – Keith Ahearn
Recording Secretary – Dawn Bilski
Corresponding Secretary – Susan Zanghi
Treasurer – David Westlake
Council Delegate – Christina McCallum

this year! Mark your calendars for our future meetings:
