Surgery TipA vital component to a successful
animal surgery is providing the
animal with proper postshysurgery
care To promote healthy
recovery Pinnacle advises waiting
5shy7 days before beginning
experiments This includes
attempting to plug in a headstage
or preamplifier into the animalrsquos
EEGEMG headmount or inserting
a biosensor into a cannula When
housing animals after surgery
ensure there is enough clearance
from the head of the animal to the
top of the cage or other fixtures or
apertures that might be present in
the home cage
While Pinnacle recommends the
above postshysurgery tips animal
surgeons should always defer to
their institutionrsquos IACUC or animal
care committee for proper animal
care procedures
Technical QuestionHow can I improve the
Itrsquos spring in Kansas which means flowers cleanup gardening and rapidly
changing weather With one eye on the sky we are excited to be
showcasing our wireless EEG products at the APSS Sleep Meeting in Seattle
and our continuous glucose monitoring system at the American Diabetes
Association Scientific Sessions in Boston We hope to have the opportunity
to meet with you at either conference
If you have any suggestions for new products mdash or improvements to our
existing products and software mdash we would love to hear from you We are
currently engaged in further developing our optogenetics systems new and
varied biosensors and enzymes and systems to allow a range of behavioral
and physiological measurements to be made with rats and mice housed in
groups
I hope you all are having a wonderful new season regardless of where you
are in the world
All the best
Donna A Johnson President and CEO
Software Updates The team at Pinnacle Technology is continually working to improve its
products and is happy to announce the release of an updated version of its
Sireniareg and Sleep Deprivation software
Sireniareg Version 172 has added features for exporting video to AVI files
within its free base package while its paid components (Seizure Pro Sleep
Pro and XshyY Tracking) now offer additional image and print options for data
plots Bug fixes were also made across all Sireniareg software to improve
quality of my animal videorecordings One simple trick to improve video
quality would be to increase the
amount of white light surrounding
the cage area For night or lowshy
light situations an IR source can
provide the illumination needed to
successfully record animal
behavior If you have purchased
Pinnacles box camera or HD
camera try adjusting the focus
lens to allow more light into the
camera
In addition to adjusting the
hardware settings on the camera
itself you can adjust settings in
Sireniareg software to improve your
recordings For your video
compression settings Pinnacle
recommends using the MJPG
option To improve the recorded
frame rate of your video
recordings you can chose to
record video at a lower resolution
or select the greyscale option
Additional information is located in
the Sireniareg Synchronized Video
manual For an electronic copy of
the latest version of the
video manual contact a Pinnacle
representative at 785shy832shy8866 or

Johnson Despite a class time nap or two his aptitude for the field was
obvious in his grades and test scores and he joined the company while still
an undergraduate in 1999 Although he briefly considered relocating after
earning his bachelorrsquos degree in 2002 he said working at Pinnacle ldquowas a fun
job so I decided to stick with itrdquo
And Gabbert has made the job more fun over the last 16 years helping to
organize intramural sports teams with other Pinnacle employees While
basketball might not have been everyonersquos forte (the team won one game in
three seasons) a Pinnacle kickball team mdash appropriately called the Rats mdash

Back on the job Gabbert has played an integral role in developing many of
Pinnaclersquos turnshykey products including its 8400 series fast scan cyclic

Pinnaclersquos optogenetic system which he will showcase and present a poster
