sub-sAhArAN AfriCAREGIONal SalES DIRECTOR

arnie came to Bell in 2003 as a consultant for the Presidential Helicopter replacement program, drawing on his US Marine Corps experience as a “Marine One” Presidential Command Pilot for Presidents Reagan and Bush.

Before Bell, arnie was the Executive Director, Sales and Marketing at HeliFlite Shares, llC, responsible for fractional helicopter sales primarily to “C”-level executives in the Commercial construction, Manufacturing, Finance, Entertainment and Fashion industries in New York City.

Prior to HeliFlite, arnie was a First Officer at US airways, flying the state-of-the-art airbus 320 series airliner, based out of Philadelphia. The events of Sept. 11, 2001 led to his departure from US airways.

Before flying for the airlines, arnie was a successful Stockbroker and Financial advisor for Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in Pensacola, Florida.

arnie retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1995 and earned

a Political Science Degree from the University of Washington. His graduate work was in Systems Management at The University of Southern California.

He lives in Johannesburg, South africa with his wife, Susan, and their 17-year old son, austin.

we pinned arnie down one morning and asked him some important questions!1. What do you enjoy most about

your job? I enjoy listening to customers’ helicopter needs and helping them find the best solutions.

2. What do you dislike the most? The necessary time away from my family.

3. Hobbies? Playing my ukuleles (I have 11 in my collection), my piano and my drums.

4. Favourite sport? american football, although I’ve grown quite fond of rugby.

5. What has been the biggest challenge in your life? Properly raising teenagers has to rank fairly high.

6. Who is your hero? Ronald Reagan

Arnie Easterly has been the Regional Sales Director for Sub-Saharan Africa since May, 2008. Prior to this assignment, he was the V-22 Osprey Business Development Manager based in Ft. Worth, Texas. His responsibilities included leadership of the Navy MV-22 campaign and several international V-22 campaigns. He also acted as the overall coordinator for MV-22 participation at the Farnborough and Paris Airshows for the Bell Boeing partnership.

7. Biggest opportunity? Being asked by Bell to accept my assignments to Germany and then South africa.

8. Where will you never go, even if they paid you? and who would you like to send to that place? I’ll go anywhere….for a price.

9. What makes you happy? My music, my wife and my children.

10. If you had to invite four people (living or dead) for dinner – who would it be and why? leonardo da Vinci (to talk about his inventions), W.a. Mozart (music talk), Humphrey Bogart (to get the real classic Hollywood dirt), abraham lincoln (what was the White House like during the civil war?)

11. If you had to be a superhero, who would you be? Batman

12. What do you enjoy the most about South Africa? The hospitality of the South africans, and the concept that no house is complete without a proper bar.

13. Who is the most interesting person you’ve ever met? See number 6.

My observation was that it handles somewhere between the Bell JetRanger and longRanger, but that is where the similarity ends. The modern avionics and cockpit layout really enhance the flying experience while reducing pilot workload.

Engine start and management are a breeze thanks to the dual channel FaDEC and, due to the engine power the overall performance is excellent. a simulated engine failure showed that the 505 is going to be an excellent training helicopter as the autorotation turned out to be a non–event.

The 505 is ideally suited to our market, and is going to be a great success!

Trys Schroeder, a valued client of NAC, was the first African to fly the Bell 505!

He was very impressed with the systems and performance of the helicopter, and delighted to have ordered the first two helicopters that will arrive later in 2017.

Augmented reality and artificial intelligence come standard in futuristic helicopter design. By Rob MarkBEll UnvEIlS FCX

The sleek new helicopter, reminiscent of an X-plane, features a single pilot seat in the center of the cockpit confirming this next-generation machine will require only a single pilot, no matter the operational conditions. an FCX pilot will control the aircraft through an “augmented reality” system tied together with an artificial intelligence computer similar to those in use aboard the F-35 fighter.

While Bell offered no performance specifics on the FCX concept machine, the company did outline a number of innovative technologies it might use, like a hybridized propulsion system combining a thermal engine core for primary power and an electric anti-torque system that not only eliminates the traditional tail rotor, but also the gears and transmission shafts that normally pull power from the main engine. The FCX main rotor blades will also morph to tailor aircraft performance to the mission at hand similar to the variable sweep of some fighter aircraft.

The airframe would be made of what Bell described as “advanced sustainable materials,” to provide the necessary structural performance, while also offering customers the configuration flexibility they need. Bell sees a highly modular cabin on the FCX, taking advantage of augmented reality technologies capable of individualizing the infotainment experience to each passenger.

as unique as the FCX concept aircraft appeared to the eye, the methodology Bell used to create the machine is almost a story in itself. The company initially created an innovation team of disparate visionaries, engineers and concept designers to imagine solutions to the problems Bell customers said they were trying to solve. after much give and tug between ideas the engineers said would work with ideas designers said might work, Bell’s team created the FCX.

ConCEpTBell Helicopter president Mitch Snyder today called the new FCX-001 concept a “vision of the future” when he pulled back the curtains to show off the mockup at Heli-Expo in Dallas.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM YOUR

AVIATION SCHOOLFactors to keep in mind before choosing

Once you’ve decided to become a professional airline pilot, your first step is to get the right information and find an aviation school that can accommodate your needs. There are many aviation schools available, but it’s important that you choose one that will help you achieve your goals, and give you the training and skills you need to excel as a qualified pilot.

Choosing an aviation school will be one of the most important choices you’ll make in your career, as this is where you will get the training, skills, and background you need to succeed. You need to choose the right course and get training from skilled, qualified personnel that are passionate about what they do.

Ask about their course details – a good school will have a comprehensive program that teaches you everything you need to know to become a top notch airline pilot.

Choosing an aviation school is an important decision and you should know exactly what your goals are before you make this decision. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from a professional aviation school in South Africa.

To summarise, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind when looking for an aviation school:

Compare different training programs, especially in terms of pricing and fees, the number of instructors and aircraft available, their accreditations, and safety records.Narrow your list down to a few possible options. Contact each aviation school, and ask for more information, specifically their entrance requirements.Set up visits with each prospective school’s admission department. You can walk the school grounds, get a feel for their environment, and get all your questions answered.Take a look at their aircraft and equipment. Confirm that they are well-maintained and that the school uses state-of-the-art technology.

43 Air School has the Southern Hemisphere’s largest “on location” training fleet. We are the ideal solution for any aspiring pilot looking for the best training facilities from the best aviation instructors.

Aircraft availability and conditionIn the same way that there needs to be plenty of instructors available, an aviation school should also have sufficient aircraft for you to log flying hours in. Make sure the school has plenty aircraft that are not outdated, otherwise your training will not fully prepare you for the newer aircraft you will fly as a pilot.

Ensure that the aircraft are in good condition, or else you might see them spending more time in the shop than the air. Look for signs of neglect, such as leaks and bald tires.

A good aviation school will offer you all this and more. Their facilities and equipment will be modern, updated and always well-maintained. Their instructors will be highly professional with a solid background in aviation. They will also offer comprehensive courses to help you get qualified as an airline pilot.

a prEscripTion For a fulfilliNG CAreerDr Glenn Staples started out working at Johannesburg Hospital before moving into the air ambulancearena. He is now the medical director with provider Awesome Air Evac, treating ill people across Africa

How did you get started?I knew early on that I wanted to be part of the emergency medical services and air ambulance fields. This dream came true in 1997 when, as a medical officer in the trauma unit at Johannesburg Hospital, I joined the Flight for life HEMS operation on Echo 1. later that same year I began flying fixed-wing air ambulance missions with International SOS out of lanseria airport near Johannesburg.

where were you trained?I did my undergraduate medical training through the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, finishing in 1995. I also did three years of registrar time specialising in anaesthetics through Wits University. I have subsequently completed an MBa through the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

what path has your career taken? My first seven years post-qualification were spent at Johannesburg Hospital (with some rotations to the other Johannesburg teaching hospitals). This time included internship, surgical senior house officer, trauma unit medical officer, and anaesthetics registrar positions. Thereafter I took up the position of medical director of Netcare 911, a private national emergency medical service in South africa. During this time I developed and managed the aeromedical division, which included four fixed-wing and three HEMS air ambulances, and five surf rescue helicopters. I was with Netcare for five years. after leaving that firm in 2008,

I set up my own company with a partner, and since then have become a health entrepreneur with a pan-african focus.

But you are still involved with medical evacuation operations?awesome air Evac is a fixedwing air ambulance service. My role as medical director includes responsibility for all clinical and quality aspects of the service, but also extends to marketing, client relationship management, and general business development. I also fly on the service as one of the flight doctors.

any interesting stories to share?I will never forget a fixed-wing evacuation flight to Port Harcourt in Nigeria in my early flying days. We were flying in a small Bombardier learjet 25 and our weather radar malfunctioned on the second leg from luanda to Port Harcourt. This left us having to approach Port Harcourt into a massive Friday evening thunderstormlargely blind. We then headed for our alternate airport, only to be informed that they were experiencing a power failure, and had no runway lights. Fortunately

a local Boeing 727 pilot had been monitoring our radio communications and radioed our pilots to suggest a small local airport in Enugu. We soon discovered that we were stuck in a small town in Nigeria with no immigration and no Jet a1 fuel on a Friday evening. The earliest we could get a fuel truck was going to be Tuesday the following week. The next morning our technical team in Johannesburg cleared us to use paraffin. We borrowed a 44-gallon drum from the airport, bought all the paraffin we could find in Enugu, and spent a couple of hours siphoning into each of the wing-tip tanks. We then flew low-level back to Port Harcourt, picked up our patient and had a relatively uneventful flight back to Johannesburg.

what’s the best part of your job? There are three things which I love most about this job. The teamwork you experience as the two pilots and two medical crew taking on a host of unknowns to achieve the mission objective. The ability to see the most remote parts of africa, a continent with which I am in love. The pure appreciation and relief on the faces of the patients and family when you rescue them from a disastrous situation and deliver them safely to a topclass hospital.

what’s the most challenging aspect?Dealing with a host of unknowns or incorrect information on each mission – whether it’s flight clearances, local airports, local hospitals or completely incorrect patient information.

on the ground, staples also handlesmarketing and client relations

this is whAt AN Airbus 380lookS lIkE wHEn IT’S CoMIng To gET yoUWith the A380 vs Challenger 604 incident, there is now growing concern amongst aircrews about the effects of the A380’s wake turbulence.

intense wake they had ever seen. In December 1993, the Faa told controllers to increase the separation, and warn aircraft following a 757 of its presence.

This was 10 years after entry into service of the 757, which had its first revenue flight in 1983.

Sound familiar? The a380 had its first revenue flight in 2007. We are 10 years down the track, and it’s very tempting to apply the logic that because this degree of incident hasn’t happened before, it’s a one-off. an outlier. That the crew reacted erroneously to a small wake upset at the limit of their flight envelope. This is both unlikely, and, given the potential threat to other crews, a dangerous perspective.

The last review of a380 wake turbulence was done in 2006, primarily by airbus. as a result, a new category was required – “Super“, in addition to the existing light, Medium, and Heavy, for use by controllers when applying the minimum separation on approach and departure. However, no additional considerations were applied for enroute wake turbulence.

Most pointedly, the review concluded that the a380 did not need any wake turbulence separation itself, because of its size. The a380 is the only aircraft in the world to have this “out”. It’s a beast. Even an antonov 124 or Boeing 747 needs 4nm from the traffic ahead.

New guidanceGiven the incident, the similarity to the B757 story, and that quiet pointers towards a bigger risk, Flight Service Bureau has issued guidance to OpsGroup members, in note to Members #24 (March 19th, 2017), which can be downloaded publicly here. The highlights are:

Z as aircrew, use SlOP whenever you can.

Z as Controllers, be mindful of smaller aircraft passing underneath a380’s.

Z avoid flying the centreline if you can. SlOP 0 is not an offset. Choose 1nm or 2nm.

Z Note the new SlOP rules from ICaO in the 16th edition of Doc 4444.

Z Expect guidance from EaSa and the Faa to follow.

With very recent updates to both NaT Doc 007 and ICaO Doc 4444, the rules for Slop are a little different than before.

In this incident, reported by the aviation Herald, a Challenger 604 at Fl340 operating from Male-abu Dhabi passed an a380 opposite direction at Fl350, one thousand feet above, about 630nm southeast of Muscat, Oman, over the arabian Sea. a short time later (1-2 minutes) the aircraft encountered wake turbulence sending the aircraft into an uncontrolled roll, turning the aircraft around at least 3 times (possibly even 5 times), both engines flamed out, the aircraft lost about 10,000 feet until the crew was able to recover the aircraft, restart the engines and divert to Muscat. The aircraft received damage beyond repair due to the G-forces, and was written off.

This is a recovery that is in the same category as the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’, and the DHl a-300 recovery in Baghdad. Envision the alternate scenario, which was far more likely: Challenger 604 business jet missing in remote part of the Indian Ocean. last contact with was a HF radio check with Mumbai. No recent satellite logons. Position uncertain. Search and Rescue attempt called off after 15 days. Nothing found. Probable cause: flew into CB.

Thanks to the remarkable job by the crew, we don’t have to guess. We know what happened. and now, there are questions.

we’ve seen this story beforeBack in 1992/3, two back-to-back fatal crashes (a Citation, and a Westwind) were attributed to the unusual wake turbulence pattern of the Boeing 757. In fact, at the time, NOaa said it was the most
