A Message from Our Pastor,or, from Our PastoFr. Tim Fairman

or,anan

Dear Friends, On June 24, 1981, six children in the town of Medjugorje, Yugoslavia (today, Bosnia-Herzegovina), began to experience phenomena which they alleged to be apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This apparition had a message of peace for the world, as well as a call to conversion, prayer and fasting. It also entrusted to the children secret messages about events to be fulfilled in the future. These "secrets," confided individually to different visionaries, have not been revealed to the public. The apparitions themselves have continued almost daily since 1981, with some of the now young adults continuing to experience them regularly (those who have not yet received all the secrets intended for them) and others not. Originally they occurred on a hilltop near the town where a large Cross commemorating the Redemption exists. They have since occurred in many other places, including the parish church, St. James, and wherever the visionaries happen to be located at the time of the apparition. The news that Our Lady might be appearing immediately began to attract pilgrims to Medjugorje, first from the surrounding countryside, and then, despite the communist government of that day, from Europe and the whole world. These included clergy and theologians, as well as experts from the physical and medical sciences who testified to some kind of phenomenon taking place when the apparition was said to be occurring. The private judgment of these early visitors did much to bolster people's belief in the events at Medjugorje. In addition, some pilgrims reported seeing the sun spin and being able to look at it without pain or eye damage, others that their rosaries turned gold colored, still others that remarkable physical or spiritual/moral healings had taken place. All of these contributed to the fame of the alleged apparition.

From the EWTN website, 2013

As you read this, Fr, Matt and I are in Medjugorje with more than 20 pilgrims from St. Theresa. The Holy Father just recently gave his permission for parishes to organize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, so here we are! I have never been to Medjugorje but Fr. Matt has. When I was first invited to go I didn’t believe it would be possible because of all the activity that occurs in a parish at this time of year. However, when I looked at the parish calendar for the week, I discovered that miraculously, there wasn’t a great deal of extra activity this week. I believe the Holy Spirit wanted me to go! I have been looking forward to this journey ever since I was invited to go several months ago. We are even spending our entire week with one of the original visionaries who continues to report daily encounters with Jesus’ Mother. As I write this, I’m not sure what to expect, but I am certain this will be a good time for prayer and union with the Lord and an opportunity to strengthen my relationship with the Blessed Mother. Fr. Matt had a great idea before we left to put a book out for a few days in the chapel to let parishioners offer their intentions for us to pray over while we are in Medjugorje. Please rest assured that we are indeed remembering those intentions as well as the other intentions we pray for regularly. I brought along a journal to write in while I am in Medjugorje. This is a unique opportunity that I may never experience again, so I want to make sure that I jot down some reflections on my experience here so that I can share them with you when I return. I look forward to telling the stories of our experience in a part of the world I have never seen! May God bless you all and as we enjoy the traditional start of summer this Memorial Day weekend, let’s offer special prayers for those who have served in our nation’s military and made the supreme sacrifice in defense of our freedom. Despite our many challenges as a country, I can’t think of a place I’d rather live than in the United States of America.

The Prayer Challenge May 2019

Challenge #5: The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that

anyone who fled to thy protec on, implored thy help,

or sought thy intercession, was le unaided.

Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother.

To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.

O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my pe ons,

but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Are you taking the Prayer Challenge?

Say this prayer daily, to ask the Blessed Mother for her assistance and her grace, especially when we feel most troubled in our daily lives. The Memorare is a prayer that reminds us that we have a wonderful advocate and protector in the mother of our Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary. In our prayers to her we honor and worship her Son, who is more than happy to listen to His mother’s pleas on our behalf.*

During the month of May, the month of Mary, your challenge is to

pray the Memorare every day.

Add this challenge to the others! Each day: say grace before each meal, pray to your guardian angel, pray the Anima Chris , pray the Apostles’ Creed, and pray the Memorare.

Take The Prayer Challenge and watch your spiritual life grow...
