October is Vocational Service Month
Vocational Service or in the case of Rotaract, Professional Development, is the theme of October. Those who
attended the Youth Conference this past Sunday, October 27, might have sit in on a lecture by Rotarian Bette
Hall from the Calabasas Rotary Club on “How to Stand Out From the Crowd”. With over 20 years of experi-
ence in Human Resource Development (previously referred to as Personnel), Bette shared the do’s and don’ts
of resumes and interviews. Here are a few helpful tips to from Bette to Rotaractors who are currently in the
market for a new job:
Resume Interview
Always have more than one person
proofread your resume.
Only list relevant information to the
position you are applying for.
Keep it short
Quantify any results (numbers are im-
pressive! Ex. Saved the company over
$1000 in expenses)
No personal information or hobbies
Eat before your interview
Research the company
Act with confidence
Do not oversell or undersell yourself
Be prepared to give examples
Always ask questions at the end of an
interview
Follow up with an immediate “Thank
You” letter or email
Bette Hall provided a full Powerpoint Presentation with lots more information including
practice interview questions. To get your copy of this resource, email [email protected]

Past Events: 2013 Big West Rotaract Conference
Berkeley,CA– Rotaractors from all over District 5280 travelled north to UC Berke-
ley for the annual Big West Rotaract Conference for a weekend of fellowship, net-
working, workshops, and team building. Among the Rotaract clubs in attendance
were Rotaract Club of UC Davis, Cal Rotaract, Rotaract Club of Greater Fremont, UC
San Diego Rotaract Club, and many more. Those from District 5280 included SMC
and USC Rotaract as well as a representative from LMU Rotaract and Rotaract of
West Los Angeles.
“The Rotaract emblem that you wear on your shirts and pins is a symbol to the
world that you are on a quest for service” greeted Rotary District 5160 governor
Steve Lack. “There are Rotaract Clubs in 178 nations and 146,000 Rotaractors in-
ternationally.” That’s a lot of service partners!
Rotaract members gave presentations and opened up inter-club discussions on
topics such as marketing, membership retention, fundraising, publicizing events,
life after college, team-building, time management, building and sustaining com-
munity and college clubs, as well as a training for presidents and president-elects.
Even as a Rotaractor for 6 years, I still learned a lot from this conference including
new ideas for keeping community clubs together and new ideas for fundraising. I
will definitely be there next year, and so should you!

October Rotaractor Highlight –Bobby Schimm
My Rotaract story began when I started my sophomore year of
college at Santa Rosa Junior College. After spending a year at
my junior college, I wanted to get involved on campus to make
friends and admittedly have something put on my transfer ap-
plications. I was introduced to the Rotaract club and thought
the combination of service and fellowship would be a great way
to do good and make friends with similar ambitions. After par-
ticipating in Rotaract at the junior college level for a year, I was
accepted to USC.
Transferring to USC was like hitting the reset button. I had no
friends and was living in a new area. The first thing I did when I moved to USC was look to see if they had a Rotaract
club because I knew it was a sure-fire way to make friends and meet people in an environment I was brand new to. I
joined the USC Rotaract club and was extremely active in the club the first year.
I now serve as the finance officer for the club and continue to
deepen my involvement in the organization because the payoffs
are incredible. I met my best friend at USC through the Rotaract
Club and have made countless others. Not only have I met quite
a few incredible people, but as I prepare to graduate, Rotaract and
Rotary have helped me immensely in my career search and per-
sonal development. Lastly, I have seen our club directly improve
the lives of people in the USC and Greater Los Angeles Area
through service efforts. The pride and happiness from seeing our
club improve people’s lives is incredible. Being apart of Rotaract
has improved my college experience in too many ways to count
and I would recommend joining Rotaract to anyone who is about to begin their college/professional journey

Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30.
Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary
club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary.
As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7,000
clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenom-
enon.
Through the Rotaract program, young adults not only augment their knowledge and skills, but they
also address the physical and social needs of their communities while promoting international un-
derstanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service.
Membership starts with you!
Invite friends, family, and co-workers to become members of your Rotaract club.
