From the Office of

PAUL DARLEY

Never in my life have I been so attuned to learning from others as we adapt to this new world theatre. Virtual meetings focused on how to best reposition our company to serve our customers, while protecting our employees, have quickly filled the void of my weekly business travel schedule.

As we reinvent our business, we have also taken a hard look introspectively at our core values. Are the core values that have guided us for the last century still applicable? The answer is a resounding “Yes! Now more so than ever!” But we now feel the importance of perseverance, resiliency, and service to others…traits that helped my grandfather run our business during the last pandemic over 100 years ago.

For the past six months at Darley, we’ve been referring to the pandemic metaphorically as a baseball game with the end of the 9th inning being a time where people can travel the world safely again. As leaders during the crisis, we know we need to balance optimism with realism, and feel we are probably in the bottom of the 3rd or top of the 4th inning. In the first couple of innings, we focused on “donning our oxygen masks first” before assisting others.

Is this really the time to implement new envi-ronmental, social and governance initiatives? The answer here again is a resounding “Yes! Now more than ever!” You will read some of our initiatives in this newsletter, from moving to solar power and electric test engines, to community involvement.

While we’ve always been a purposeful busi-ness, we now have a renewed focus on service to others. I still vividly remember a conversation with my father, Bill Darley, when I was about 10 years old. He sat me down and explained how our company is a vehicle for greater good by service to others. We will never forget that message and it will continue to be a guiding light in all that we do.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. If there is anything we can be doing to assist you during these trying times, I hope you’ll reach out to us.

Where Does Corporate Social Responsibility Fit During These Times?

The Detroit Fire Department has officially reached Darley Demander status, setting the pace for Departments making the switch to Darley pumps. The DFD worked with Darley to pro-vide small 1.5AG PTO driven pumps to provide emergency suppression capabilities on their aerial trucks and rescue squads. The past few years, the Department has equipped these PTO pumps on 17 fire apparatus provided by Darley OEM partners HME and Smeal. While these apparatus and their crews’ primary responsibilities are not direct suppression, Deputy Fire Commissioner Dave Fornell and the Detroit team had seen too many instances where an extinguisher wouldn’t cut it. One of these rigs was first on scene of an MVA or small Room and Contents Fire and “We were able to knock down the fire before the arrival engine companies,” commented Dave Fornell.

It didn’t stop there. While integrating these apparatus, the Detroit team was also looking to update and improve their fleet’s pumpers. The DFD’s teams of division-al stakeholders in Maintenance, Training, and Operations spent significant time researching pump manufacturers. After many discussions, the decision was made to move forward with the Darley PSM. In March, Detroit awarded a five-year contract to Spartan for 35 pumpers equipped with the Darley PSM, through Spartan Dealer and Darley partner Ricke Roselle, of R&R Firetrucks. The first six of these pumpers are scheduled for delivery this Fall.

To top it off, the FD will also be taking delivery of a fire boat equipped with a Darley PSDE provided by Darley OEM partner Silver Ships. These boats also contain a number

of FBX products. Talk about making the switch! Darley couldn’t be more proud of our partnership with the Detroit FD as we continue to welcome new customers and enhance and strengthen our relationships with longtime customers.

We are excited to announce Darley headquarters is going solar! With solar panels installed, over 75% of the facility’s annual energy load will be covered, with an estimated 203,565 solar energy output (kWh). It is expected to generate 4,631,104 kWh of energy over the next 25 years.

Fossil fuel consumption is one of the leading causes of global warming. The more traditional energy sources we burn, like oil, gas, and coal, the more greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere. These pollutants can disrupt earth’s delicate balance, leading to climate change and environmental destruction. However, energy produced by solar panels doesn’t emit CO2 or other greenhouse gases. By Installing solar panels, Darley will offset 257,654 lbs. of CO2 per year, equivalent to planting 66.56 acres of trees yearly. Darley will draw less traditional energy from the grid, reducing our carbon footprint. Our work in renewable energy and green business is an ongoing process, one that we are fully committed to, because the future of the environ-ment depends on it.

Most every week, a firefighter or inventor contacts Darley with an idea for a new product they want us to introduce to the fire market. Ken Blocker is a great example of a firefighter with a passion and the belief that his product “The Aqua Blaster” can make a firefighter’s job more effective while relieving some of the stress associated with the rigors that come with the job. Ken is a former City of Columbia, SC firefighter and first came up with the idea in 1999. The AquaBlaster is a chest-harnessed system that allows the firefighter to use his or her body to absorb the nozzle reaction while fighting a fire instead of just hanging on to a hose line. Departments can use their existing nozzles. The AquaBlaster has an 1.5" NST inlet and outlet standard, NPSH and other hose threads are available.

See more information on this product and a video online at www.edarley.com, keyword search “AquaBlaster”.

E-ONE, a subsidiary of REV Group and a leading manufacturer of fire apparatus, has selected Darley as its pump supplier for new TITAN® 4x4 Air Transportable (AT) ARFF P-19C vehicles to the United States Air Force (U.S.A.F.)

These vehicles are specifically designed to fit on Lockheed Martin’s C-130 Super Hercules, allowing the vehicles to be rapidly deployed to U.S.A.F. bases around the world. This TITAN AT P-19C is about two-thirds the size with a transport weight of less than 26,000 lbs. and GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of approximately 42,000 lbs., while meeting all the perfor-mance requirements of NFPA 414 with acceleration from 0-50 mph in less than 25 seconds.

The extruded aluminum cab, with 56.4 sq. ft. of glass area and cockpit style seating, provides outstanding visibility for the driver, officer and crew. Each of these vehicles will be painted in a matte finish desert sand color.

The TITAN® ARFF vehicle features a Cummins 500 HP engine, Allison 4000 EVS transmission, Cushman power divider, 1000 gallon water/ 140 gallon Class “B” foam concentrate tank, 250 lb. dry chemical system and a Darley PSP 1500 gpm water pump.

“E-ONE has built the Air Force Fire & Emergency Services the next generation air transportable ARFF truck by taking us from an early 1980s model to today’s environment for our warfighters, while still remaining consistent with the airframe utilized for transportability around the world,” said Fred Terryn, Fire Vehicle Program Manager for the U.S. Air Force. “The new TITAN AT will be the workhorse for our deployed firefighters and E-ONE has ensured it meets our requirements wherever the mission is requested.”

“We are very excited the U.S. Air Force selected E-ONE to build the next generation air transportable ARFF vehicle,” said RJ Jones, Key Account Manager for E-ONE. “To meet the strict dimension and weight requirements for loading onto a C-130 aircraft, E-ONE engineers worked closely with the U.S. Air Force and chose Darley to assist us with the pump and plumbing components on this truly innovative vehicle.”

E-One Pump and Plumbing Engineer, Steve Swayze commented, “Darley worked with us on a unique pump layout. The compact design and lightweight Darley PSP were instrumental in helping us achieve our weight and space requirements. The Darley pump easily pumps 1800 GPM @ 200 PSI, well above its rated capacity.”

There are several different tests conducted to ensure a new pump works as desired. The first test is dry vacuum testing to ensure that it holds a vacuum. The pump will be taken to at least a 22 in/Hg (75 kPa) dry vacuum and then watched to see how that vacuum changes over time. That vacuum cannot drop more than 10 in/Hg (34 kPa) in a five-minute time span to be considered passing. The pump would then go through a hydro-static pressure test to ensure it’s structurally capable of containing pressure. Typical hydrostatic pressure tests are done at 500 PSIG (3400 kPa) for a 10-minute time span without any leaks whatsoever for it to be considered passing.

The next test is finding the highest flow rate when following NFPA or CCC guidelines. This is done by running at the highest flow rate we think the pump could be rated for, at the overload discharge pressure of 165 PSI (1100 kPa), while finding what the maximum suction vacuum is. We find that maximum suction

vacuum by putting a valve in the suction hose and then slowly closing that valve until a greater suction vacuum cannot be attained while we adjust the engine speed to keep the flow rate and discharge pressure at the rating point. If the pump can adequately attain the

necessary suction vacuum that demonstrates the required draft-ing height plus a margin of safety for that flow rate, then the pump is deemed capable of that rating. Our margin of safety on drafting height is typically 1.5 ft (.46m) over the required drafting height. The pump will then be run at its maximum ratable flow rate for four hours continuously, at the overload discharge pressure, to ensure the transmission oil temperature stabi-lizes and does not exceed our desired temperature limit which is typically 250˚F (121˚C). If it passes that test, we then run a full pump curve.

A full pump curve is simply running the pump at every imaginable engine speed and flow rate we think is possible for it to endure. If the pump operated smoothly throughout that entire pump curve testing, it would then be considered passing that test. We then run the pump in four-hour time blocks at the performance points of its maximum rating. Say for a 2250 gpm rated pump we would run at 2250 gpm at 165 PSI for four hours followed by running at 2250 gpm at 150 PSI for four hours followed by running at 1575 gpm at 200 PSI for four hours followed by running at 1125 gpm at 250 PSI for four hours and then repeating those same four-hour blocks all over again. This keeps repeating until the pump has a total run time of 100 hours. After all that testing is passed, the used oil from the transmission is sent out for a laboratory analysis. We then disassemble the pump and examine the used parts for any signs of unexpected wear. If the used oil was still usable and the used parts appeared to have normal wear, we would deem the entire pump passing its required testing and be available for sale.

Since the beginning of the Darley Pump Division, all fire apparatus vehicle-driven pumps were bench tested with either a gas or diesel engine. By years end, all Darley vehicle driven pumps will now be bench-tested using electric motors with Variable Frequency Driven (VFD) controls.

Darley has five test bays consisting of one 250 HP, three 500 HP and, on the fifth bay, we are currently installing a 1000 HP electric motor. This fifth motor will allow us to test beyond what is currently available in any chassis being used in the fire apparatus industry. We are very excited to match this up with our 2ZS 6000 GPM pump to see if we can validate improved record setting performance.

Darley has partnered with Xcel Energy and their Focus on Energy team. We are on a power management program with Xcel Energy so we can keep our power consumption lower when needed. From 9 am to 9 pm, we limit power draw to help protect the power grid while it has the greatest demand. Additionally, we are environmentally conscious and are receiving over 40% of our power from renewable resources such as air, wind, water, and solar power.

One major advantage in exclusively using electric motors is a reduction in our carbon footprint. We no longer run diesel motors throughout all hours of the day, which significantly decreases our nitrogen oxide emissions and is great for our environ-ment. Additionally, we are better stewards of our community. Our neighbors no longer hear the roar of the engines. Other advantages we are seeing with electric motors include far less preventive maintenance, significantly reduced downtime potential, and less demand on fossil fuels.

Darley is a progressive, innovative, forward-thinking world-class manufacturer of fire pumps. We welcome the opportunity for you to visit Darley’s Chippewa Falls operations (after the COVID 19 pandemic) to see it for yourself!

DARLEY TIMES

Family Business Magazine recognized Audrey Darley (fourth generation Darley) in its NextGens to Watch Class of 2020.

The article, from the July/August 2020 issue, cited Audrey’s work experience before joining the family business, as well as her active involvement in company initiatives and other business organizations. Audrey is currently the Director of Supply Partner Relationships for Darley’s fast-growing Defense division.

Audrey earned a BS degree in Finance from the University of Illinois and worked as a commercial banker for four years, prior to joining Darley in 2014. Darley family members are required to work outside the company in meaningful employment for 3-5 years. “The opportunity to carry on our family tradition of serving first responder and tactical communities is something I am innately proud of every day,” Audrey says. “Spending time out-side of the business allowed me to not only explore my key skill sets, but to appreciate our history and realize what we have been fortunate enough to grow.”

She and her husband, Stephen, welcomed their first child, Grayson, on July 28, 2020.

There are currently 31 fourth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.

FOURTH GENERATION DARLEY

Jasmine Darley is 11 years old, the youngest daughter of Jimmy and Christina Darley and a fourth generation (G4) descendant of our company founder, William S. Darley.

Like most kids in the world, she’s had to adjust to new realities of social distancing and virtual classrooms but is handling it in stride as a 6th grader. Jasmine comments, “Instead of thinking of all the things I can’t do, I try to focus on the things I can do like working on my soccer skills or just riding around on my bike with friends.”

Other interests include water sports and theatre and her love of the family’s two dogs and cat, Tino, Jett & Hunter.

She and her cousins recently got up early, walked 21 mi. around the lake path of the beautiful Geneva Lake in Wisconsin. “It was hard but it was fun. It was my second time around,” said Jasmine.

SNA International, together with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, recently partnered to utilize Darley pumps for dredging to assist with human identification and forensic initiatives. Pumps are used to power jets in order to create a suction for the diver to dredge sediment.

Ezra Swanson of the DPAA, who has been utilizing Darley’s marine version of the HGE37EFI portable pump on a mission in Vietnam, states “Switching to Darley pumps and priming systems reduced our man hours by a factor of 15! This enabled us to spend more time focused on our mission of finding our lost Service Members.”

This pump has been used for multiple purposes both on land and at sea due to its versatility and compact size. ”The electronic fuel injection on this 37HP Briggs has also been a real hit,” says Darley National Pump Sales Manager, Jimmy Darley.
