Dear Mercer Parents,
Several recent studies show that active, positive student involvement in the
school community leads to academic success. As we start the second quarter
of the school year, I wish to encourage our students to contribute to Mercer
through club and activity participation. Our school website has a detailed list
of contacts, sponsors and meeting times.
American Education week November 12-16 was a true celebration and
showcased our talented staff. The week highlighted the support that the
Mercer staff provides for the wonderful students of Mercer Middle School.
Several highlights included: the PTA recognition breakfast, support staff
recognitions, Dean’s Dozen and Honor Roll ceremonies, American
Education Idol, Book Fair, Bullying Awareness events, and many parent
visitations for classroom events. At Mercer, our teachers are committed to
providing rich, challenging learning experiences for all students and this
week accentuated this commitment.
I wish to personally thank Karen Goodwin, PTA President as well as the
entire PTA for their generous instructional contributions during American
Education Week. The Mercer PTA’s instructional focus and support benefits
the entire school community. I wish to invite all parents to attend our PTA
meetings which are held every second Thursday at 7:00 PM in our Library.
Please see our website for a list of guest speakers and instructional
opportunities.
I am so proud of our students and their continued academic successes. We
had an amazing total of 409 students make ‘A/B’ Honor Roll for the first
nine weeks and 195 make ‘A’ Honor Roll. These hard working students
were recognized publicly during our Ice Cream Social on November 16, as
well as noted in this newsletter.
Our students continue to find ways to support those less fortunate during the
holiday seasons. Our annual canned food drive, which continues through
December, supports Interfaith Relief, and our Mercer Holiday Coalition
provides assistance for Mercer families in need.
Winter always brings opportunities for our students to showcase their talents.
Our Performing Arts shows include the 8th grade combined Jazz Band, Band,
Choir, Guitar and Strings Concert on December 6th and Band Concert on
January 24th.
Finally, January 17th will mark the end of the first semester and the midpoint
of the school year. Please take time to review goals set by your student and
work with teachers to make sure that your student remains on pace.
Throughout the next semester, we will focus our efforts on transition and our
successful partnership with John Champe High School. Multiple events will
showcase the educational opportunities in store for our 8th graders as they
look ahead to their new start.
As always,
Go Mountain Lions!

Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC)
Budget Concerns
Our SEAC encourages parents to follow the upcoming Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) budget
process. According to an October 3rd article in Leesburg Today, the Board of Supervisors is proposing
a FY14 budget that reflects a 3-cent tax rate reduction in the LCPS budget—or $68 million in cuts.
These budget cuts, if enacted, will impact everyone—both in the general education and special educa-
tion setting. SEAC encourages all parents to get involved and contact your Board Supervisor to voice
your support for the school budget. Email addresses for the Board of Supervisors are available at http://
www.loudoun.gov/index.aspx?nid=2178. Stay tuned to our two local papers: www.loudountimes.com
and www.leesburgtoday.com for updates on the budget process.
In light of these budget concerns, it’s well worth noting that in 2011, LCPS served nearly 7,000 stu-
dents with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. More than 80 percent of
students with disabilities graduated with a state-approved diploma and 93 percent of students went on
to employment, education, or other post-secondary opportunities. Excellent work, terrific results! An-
other reason to insist on fully funded schools. Dr. Edgar B. Hatrick, LCPS Superintendent, will be
presenting the LCPS Budget to the School Board on December 6th at 6:30 pm in the LCPS Administra-
tion Building Board Room. SEAC encourages everyone to come out to listen in person or to watch via
Channel 43 on Verizon Fios or elsewhere online. This will be the first step in the upcoming LCPS
budget process, and SEAC encourages everyone to stay tuned to our two local papers linked the the
first paragraph of this report.
Annual Report Available
The SEAC 2012-2013 Annual Report, presented to the Loudoun County School Board on October 23,
is now available online at: www.lcps.org, click on Parents, then Special Education Advisory Commit-
tee, and Annual Reports is on the left hand side of the screen. The School Board expressed great inter-
est and much support for providing district-wide conformity to inclusive practices.
Meeting Updates
The following subcommittees have been established: Reading; Inclusive Practices; Transition Ser-
vices; and Planning-Growth of ECSE and ASD Populations. If you are interested in serving on a sub-
committee, please notify SEAC Chair [email protected].
October was Disability History Awareness Month with the October 16th SEAC meeting featuring a
panel presentation “Inclusive Schools: How to Support, Develop, and Maintain Peer Mentor Pro-
grams.” Cedar Lane Elementary School, Eagle Ridge Middle School, and Heritage High School repre-
sentatives spoke on how their schools encourage an environment where all children are accepted into
the school community, and discussed the peer mentoring programs taking place in both the academic
and social settings at those three schools. The meeting was preceded by an hour-long orientation for
incoming and incumbent SEAC representatives. This informative session offered instruction and tips
toward being an involved and effective representative. A checklist and Powerpoint presentation are
available on the SEAC website and from our representative at SEACMercerMid-
Paw Prints 7
The November 13th SEAC meeting featured a presentation“Autism Spectrum Disorders in Our School
District: Prevalence, Projected Growth, and the Role of the Autism Specialist,” given by LCPS Autism
Specialist Kathie Burns. Currently, 1 in 88 children nationwide have an Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Within LCPS, there are currently 868 students with Autism receiving services (about 1% of the total
student population). This is up from 150 in 2001. This increase means a greater need for long-range
and strategic planning, consistent and expanded services, and teacher preparation and on-going train-
ing. The Autism Specialist oversees all of the autism programs in LCPS and develops and delivers
school-based training for school based staff and administrators using evidence based strategies. Par-
ents can reach Kathie Burns through the Office of Special Education at 571-252-1011 or via email at
[email protected]. Kathie’s presentation will also be available on SEAC’s website:
www.lcps.org, click on Parents, then Special Education Advisory Committee.
Upcoming Events, Future Meetings, Other Notices
The first week of December is Inclusive Schools Week. PTA/PTOs are encouraged to ask their school
administrator about what is being planned at their school to celebrate this important national initiative.
Ideas and resources for participation in Inclusive Schools Week are available at
www.inclusiveschools.org. SEAC PTA/PTO reps are encouraged to share their highlights via SEAC’s
Facebook Page or via email to [email protected].
SEAC will meet again on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, from 7 to 9 PM, at the LCPS Administration
Building, Room 102. The presentation will be “Determination of Least Restrictive Environment and
ESY Participation with Non Disabled Peers in Extracurricular Activities and Non Academic Activi-
ties.”
Mercer PTA seeks the parent of a 6th grader to represent us at the monthly Special Education Advisory
Committee (SEAC) meetings held on the second Tuesday of the month from 7 to 9 PM at the Educa-
tion Building in Ashburn. (See details about the meetings and upcoming topics below.) This is the
perfect time and opportunity for the 6th grade representative to get acquainted with the committee and
learn what an SEAC rep does to help our school and our students. All who are interested in learning
more about what Loudoun is doing for our students are welcomed and encouraged to attend. For de-
tails, visit the SEAC web page on the LCPS website www.lcps.org.
Stay in touch with SEAC activities by LIKING us on Facebook. The Special Education Advisory Com-
mittee is composed of parents, educators, administrators, business representatives, and other interested
community groups concerned with the education of students with disabilities. For more information on
SEAC please click here.
LCPS Parent Resource Center
The Loudoun County Public Schools Parent Resource Center (PRC) is a place where parents and pro-
fessionals can come to learn about a variety of disabling conditions, the special education process, and
resources available to special needs students and their families or families whose children are experi-
encing difficulties in school, home or the community. Learn more about the Parent Resource Center
and their valuable workshops at www.lcps.org/prc. While visiting the PRC website, register for their
KEEP IN TOUCH program, so that you are notified of special events and announcements. The LCPS
Parent Resource Center hosts monthly programs here at Mercer, and you will find past presentations
and topic ideas on their website: www.lcps.org/prc.

A huge thank you to all who have turned in permission forms and are using the parent portal to keep informed of your
child's grades and upcoming assignments. If you lost your password, simply email me at [email protected] and I'd be
happy to give that to you.
As a school, we believe that good communication is integral to student success. Our hope is that the parent portal does not
replace the contact between teachers and parents, but serves in addition to it. We also want kids to know that their grades
are not a secret- our sincere hope is that parents and students are sitting down together to access the portal, discussing
strengths and weaknesses, and devising a plan for improvement. We even encourage students to log in themselves to
monitor their progress!
Your feedback on the portal is important to us. Please feel free at any time to contact me with questions or concerns.

Open Computer Lab Morning Hours
Many thanks for all those who turned out to the Annual MMS Multi-Cultural Pot Luck Dinner. The food was delicious and
diverse, and it was a good opportunity to chat-up this year’s doings for the Multi-Cultural Club. An essay contest was
announced with a $100 top prize and two $50 second prizes.
We are seeking assistance and volunteers for the February 2013 Multi-Cultural Festival to make it fun-filled and
informative, especially for assistance in garnering support and participation from the embassies who can participate in the
festival. Please contact Cynthia Decker: [email protected].
Mercer's Computer Lab is now open 7:40 AM on Wednesday and Thursday mornings to accommodate students who need
to complete work. The Computer Lab is also open Wednesday afternoons 3:30-4:25 PM.
We hope our students take advantage of this opportunity, as many classes have gone high tech and require computer usage
to complete assignments. This also provides access to our Mercer families without computers in their homes.
Hope to see you there!
