That verse of Torah is the reason that come 6:00pm on Wednesday, October 12, many of us are going to be beyond ready for the bagels and egg salad waiting for us after our Yom Kippur fast. As Reform Jews we have the freedom for everyone to fast in a different way, and some choose not to fast, but I thought it would be interesting to give a rundown of the “traditional” Yom Kippur fast, as you decide what you will do this Yom Kippur.
Fasting is probably one of our oldest traditions, as abstaining from food and drink was believed to gain favor from a deity, even before Judaism existed. Thus, whenever people in ancient times felt in danger or wanted to repent for a mistake, they would fast. There are actually several fast days in the Jewish calendar, but most are only from sunrise to sundown. Yom Kippur and Tisha b’Av (the day commemorating the destruction of the Temple) are the only two full fasts, traditionally lasting 25 hours, beginning before sundown and ending when it’s dark enough to see three stars in the sky. Also, while the minor fast days only include abstaining from food and drink, Yom Kippur and Tisha b’Av include abstaining from bathing, anointing with perfumes or deodorants (Yom Kippur has the potential to be a very smelly day), wearing leather, and conjugal relations. The Rabbis say that these are the areas of gratification that lead us to sin, and thus the areas from which we should keep our distance when we are asking for forgiveness from these sins. As strict as this sounds, there are also many exceptions to fasting. According to Rabbinic law, a child under the age of nine is forbidden
from fasting, as is a pregnant woman. Children older than nine are supposed to gradually add time so they are ready to fast after their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Someone
who is ill is supposed to ask his or her doctor, and if the doctor tells them they have to eat, they are required to eat even if they feel well enough to fast. A sick person who says he cannot fast, even if his doctor says he can, is also allowed to eat. As Reform Jews, some of us will eat breakfast Yom Kippur morning; many of us will choose to shower, brush our teeth, put
on deodorant, and wear our leather shoes. Some will fast for 25 hours, while others will fast for part of the day. But regardless of what we do or don’t do, the prophet explained the true purpose of the fast best in his answer to the people’s plea of why their prayers were not being answered, even though they were fasting. Why, when we fasted did you not see? When we starved our bodies, did you pay no heed? Because on your fast day you see to your business and oppress all your laborers. Because you fast in strife and contention and you strike with a wicked fist ... Is this the fast I desire?... No, this is the fast I desire. To
unlock fetters of wickedness … to let the oppressed go free. It is to share your bread with the hungry, and to take the wretched poor into your home. – Isaiah 58:3-7 Whatever our ritual is for Yom Kippur, may these High Holy Days inspire us to see where we have gone astray and where we could do better, and ultimately, may they help us try to make the world a better place.

Anthony Bourdain - Parts Unknown: Season 2, Episode 1 - JERUSALEM
Controversial chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain’s visit to Jerusalem was fairly criticized by many as ignoring the mainstream Jewish Israeli story. My hope is that most of us have seen this Israel, either through our own visit or pictures and stories of a loved one’s visit. While it is important to know that the episode is not balanced, it offers us a glimpse into the West Bank and Gaza that most of us as American tourists to Israel will never see. As one expects with Bourdain, the episode is controversial, and I do not view it as providing answers, but rather questions that can help lead us to a better understanding of the conflict as a whole. I will be discussing the episode as part of my Rosh Hashanah sermon and hope that it can serve as the beginning of a conversation rather than its end. As you watch the episode, think about what upsets you? Why does it upset you? Are you more hopeful or less hopeful for a future of peace after watching? Why or why not? My door (and e-mail) are always open, and I hope that if you have questions about this episode or my sermon that you will reach out to me to discuss.
– Rabbi Simon
Each month a member of our clergy/staff will recommend a movie or television series that is easily watchable on Netflix, Amazon, cable On Demand, etc. Our hope is that this might inspire you to watch what we’re watching, and join us in meaningful conversation. Each month we will start a conversation on our Shir Ami community Facebook page so we can discuss the month’s selection.

S’MORES SHABBATSHIRON | OCTOBER 2016
The start of the school year has been an extremely smooth one. All the children have transitioned beautifully. That’s quite a testament to our fantastic teachers! Since the high holy days are a little later this year, the teachers were able to spend the first few weeks of school acclimating everyone to their new surroundings and transitioning our children into their new
classrooms and friendships. Our “Back to School Nite” proved to be an extremely informative evening and our parents got to form new friendships as they learned about their child’s new class, teachers, and routines.
As the month of September came to an end, we started learning about the season of Fall. Our classrooms and hallways are decorated with colorful leaves. The children are comparing, counting, coloring and singing the colors of red, orange, yellow and brown. We also began to learn about Rosh Hashanah and the New Year, 5777. I loved taking each class out to the Biblical Garden for apple picking! We are so fortunate to have these trees right on our premises! The children were extremely excited to eat the apples they picked as we dipped them in honey for a sweet new year. Pre-K even learned about bees and different kinds of honey in science enrichment. Our Pre-K and Kindergarten children got to learn first hand about whales as they participated in a virtual whale watch. It was soooo cool sitting inside a giant whale. Now we know how Jonah felt!! As we look ahead to October, which is safety month as well as more wonderful Jewish holidays, we look forward to a lot more fun and exciting activities to continue our journey through our year at school.
On behalf of myself and all the teachers and staff of the Early Learning Center, I wish everyone a Shanah Tovah U’metukah – a good, sweet New Year!

October is a month where we notice the weather getting a little cooler, the days getting a little shorter and everything from coffee to donuts to cheesecake going pumpkin-spiced. This October we also have the opportunity this month to usher in a new Jewish year on Rosh HaShanah, think hard about what we have done in the past and what
we wish to do in the future on Yom Kippur, remember how our ancestors wandered through the desert, escaped Egyptian slavery and headed to freedom in Israel during Sukkot and have the chance to once again hear the reading of Torah completed and begun all over again on Simchat Torah.
Quite a busy month to say the least! I might need two or three pumpkin-spiced lattes a day just to keep up!
In school, October is a month during which students have the opportunity to learn about Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. In every grade students will engage in hands-on activities that center on the ethics, values, mitzvot and rituals at the core of each sacred day. Whether sampling holiday foods, designing leather-free shoes they may choose to wear on Yom Kippur, shaking the lulav and etrog, and/or learning how a Torah is made, our students will have opportunities to experience the holidays with all of their senses. (And, yes, there may be a few pumpkin-spiced items around during Sukkot).
In addition to our school activities, I hope your family will take the time during this busy month to join together with other Shir Ami families in marking these sacred occasions. I know I will see you at services and I hope your family will also join us for these special events, where we can celebrate together and engage in mitzvot that help the community in which we live:
I look forward to seeing you all month, both inside and outside. After all, while the weather may be getting a little cooler and the days a little shorter, there is nothing like sitting in the Sukkah with friends, drinking coffee, tea or hot chocolate while sharing stories, catching up and having a good laugh.
And, of course, eating or drinking something pumpkin-spiced.
Shanah Tovah from my family to yours!

This is a monumental year for me. I am proud to say this new year of 5777 marks my 25th year of being a part of a leadership team of this incredible youth group. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to teach our teens to be leaders, make new friends, participate in community service, be supportive, be inclusive, take initiative, work as a team, and make mistakes – but be stronger because of them. It is my job to partner with parents to help raise responsible Jewish teens so that they can be better people on their journey after high school.
My hope is that the new year brings the same excitement with even more participation. Not only do we look forward to our social events this month, but we have planned great programs for our 3rd through 6th graders during the High Holy Days Family Experience.
Thanks to all of our parents for your ongoing support. Together we are helping to keep families engaged in synagogue life, which can help ensure our Jewish future.

LEARN WITH SHIR AMI • 5777 / 2016-2017
THIS YEAR’S THEME: THE AMERICAN JEWISH ExPERIENCE
The first Jewish community was established in what is now the United States in 1654 when 23 Dutch Jews, recently expelled from Brazil where they had settled two decades earlier, arrived in New Amsterdam. Now, over 360 years later, over 5 million Jews call America home, often struggling with a balance between the values of our ancient Jewish tradition with those of a modern America. Over the course of this year, we will be looking at the Jewish experience in America from a historical, textual, and cultural perspective with classes taught by our Shir Ami clergy and special guests. Look for a full Lifelong Learning schedule during the upcoming High Holy Days.______________________________________________________________
(All Thursday evening classes will be repeated the following Tuesday morning to ensure that as many members as possible are able to attend, learn, and contribute) ______________________________________________________________

REFORMING REFORM: A LOOK AT THE CREATION AND EVOLUTION OF THE REFORM MOVEMENT IN AMERICA
Led by Rabbi Simon
When the Reform movement was established in America over 130 years ago, what “Reform” meant was very different than its meaning today. During this session we will look at how we went from just being Jewish to having Reform, Conservative,
Orthodox, and Reconstructionist, learn the differences between the American movements, and look at how our Reform movement has changed over time.
LUNCH AND LEARNMonday, October 17 at 11:30am
USHPI-WHAT???On this, the first day of Sukkot, Rabbi Simon will teach about the custom of “Ushpizin,” inviting guests into your Sukkah, but the traditional guests of “Ushpizin” have been dead for over 3,000 years. We will learn about the history of this tradition and talk about who our own “Ushpizin” would be today, all while enjoying lunch together in the sukkah (weather permitting). All attendees will have the opportunity to shake lulav and Etrog.
Free lunch will be provided – please RSVP.
Looking Ahead:
November 3 / November 8THE HISTORY OF JEWISH PHILADELPHIA
Special Guest Rabbi Lance Sussman, Senior Rabbi of Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park will offer an illustrated lecture about the history of the Jews in Philadelphia, beginning before there was an America, with the first Jewish communities from 1700 to 1776. Special Guest Rabbi Brian Leiken of Temple Beth Shalom in New City, NY has researched and written about the Jews of Rock and Roll. SHIRON | OCTOBER 2016
November 10 / November 15THE ETHICAL DILEMMA OF THE JEWISH MOBSTERLed by Rabbi Eric Goldberg
In 1929, Louis Fleisher, Harry Fleisher, and Henry Shorr attended services at Orthodox Congregation B’nai David in Northwest Detroit. On the surface this would not be noteworthy, except for the fact that all three men were members of Detroit’s Purple Gang, a mostly Jewish group of mobsters. As Tablet Magazine asked: ‘Why [would] gangsters who broke every law still go to services on Yom Kippur?’ What about Meyer Lansky, “Bugsy” Siegel, Morris Barney, “Moe” Dalitz, Sam Cohen and other Jewish mobsters who helped kick-start the transformation of Las Vegas from desert to vacation capital? Are they heroes or anti-heroes? Come join us as we look at some of the most famous Jewish mobsters, their complex lives and how they helped to both build and tear down cities all over America.
November 17 / November 22JUDAISM’S RESPONSE TO INTERFAITH RELATIONSHIPSLed by Rabbi Paula Goldberg
In this session, we will look at Jewish wisdom, Responsa Literature, as it responded (and continues to respond) to a growing number of interfaith relationships, marriages, and families. We will examine and compare the ways different streams of Judaism (Reform, Conservative, etc. ) react, each in their own way, trying to ensure the survival of American Judaism.

Remember, as with many of our Lifelong Learning classes, the same class will be taught both Thursday evening and Tuesday afternoon as an attempt to make classes available and accessible to all of our congregants.

Through the generosity of three families, Mindy and David Chesner, Margie and Mark Kopins, and Debbie and Scott Stevens, we have been given a head start to our Annual Circle of Giving Campaign. Each family has stepped forward and pledged $18,000. Together as a congregation, our goal is to match or beat the total of $54,000. We’re counting on your support to achieve our goal.
Circle of Giving ensures that everyone can be a member of Shir Ami regardless of financial means. Please take the challenge and join the Circle of Giving this year to help us strengthen our congregation.
____ As a member in good standing of Shir Ami, YES, I would
like to be a member of Circle of Giving for the fiscal year July, 2016

Please join us for great Broadway shows and camaraderie. Open to all Shir Ami members, and invite your families and friends to join us!
Our Shir Ami Theatre Club has about 60 people going to see “The Front Page” with Nathan Lane, John Goodman, etc. in early November in New York. It is sold out, but I have a waiting list if anyone is interested in joining us. There are many new shows and revivals (musicals and plays) that I am going to book for our group for late Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. I spoke to Jerry Herman on Labor Day and he told me how excited he is with the cast for the new revival of his multi award winning “Hello Dolly” with Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce. As soon as their box office opens at the Shubert Theatre in New York I plan to book it for us! Our whole family wishes all of you a Happy and Healthy New Year!!!

On the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is one thing we do; the Kaddish spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday evening before the yahrzeit. You are encouraged to honor your loved one with a living memorial with a contribution to one of our special Temple funds.

YAHRZEIT LIGHT CEREMONIALThe family gathers at dusk, before the evening meal, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the departed. The head of the family speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.
Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing.

About Our Cover Photo:The first day of Sunday Hebrew School is an exciting time for our teachers and students. There’s a lot of activity as children get acclimated to their new classes and say hello to old friends. Towards the end of the session, we gathered in the Sanctuary for a special program.
Before dismissal, we invited dozens of them to gather on our bimah and pose for a few pictures – one of which end-ed up as the cover of this month’s Shiron. We thank all of the students who participated that morning. Below are the results of those fun moments:
