He raised his math grade this quarter. Or he finally finished reading that book series. There’s no better motivation for a child than setting a goal and reaching it. But sometimes, a major accomplishment also calls for a celebration. So when your child sets and reaches a challenging goal, try one of these fun ideas: 1. Take a picture. Get a picture of your child showing off his report card. Get a snapshot of him in his basketball uniform. Or ask your child to draw a picture of his accomplishment. Frame it and put it by your child’s bed. That way, every time he wakes up, he’ll see an image of himself as an achiever. 2. Plan a special surprise. On one side of a piece of paper, write down a goal your child wants to achieve. On the other side of the paper, write down a small reward—such as having a friend over for a sleepover. Now roll up the paper and put it into a balloon. Tell your child that when he reaches his goal, you’ll pop the balloon together and he’ll find out what he’s earned! 3. Host a victory dinner. Set a “fancy” table and serve your child’s favorite foods. Have a special family dinner to celebrate your child’s success. JANUARY 1/3/2017 Cafe: Admin Gym: Admin No School! No School! Try new ways to celebrate your child’s academic successHe did it! He raised his math grade this quarter. Or he nally nished reading that book series.

There’s no better motivation for a child than setting a goal and reaching it. But sometimes, a major accomplishment also calls for a celebration. So when your child sets and reaches a challenging

picture of his accomplishment. Frame it and put it by your child’s bed. That way, every time he wakes up, he’ll see an image of himself as an

achiever.

2. Plan a special surprise. On one side of a piece of paper, write down a goal your child wants to achieve. On the other side of

the paper, write down a small reward—such as having a friend over for a sleepover. Now roll up the paper and put it

into a balloon. Tell your child that when he reaches his goal, you’ll pop the balloon together and he’ll find out what he’s earned!

3. Host a victory dinner. Set a “fancy” table and serve your child’s favorite foods. Have a special family dinner to celebrate your child’s success.

From the Desk of Ms. BlackmonFrom the Desk of Ms. BlackmonDear Parents,

Are you planning a family trip for the holidays? As you think about your arrangements, we want to stress the importance of sending your child to school every day possible.

Every year, absences spike in the weeks before and after the winter holiday as families squeeze in a few more vacation days. It’s time to break that cycle. We know that just a few missed days here and there, even if they’re excused absences, can add up to too much lost learning time and put your child behind in school. This is as true in kindergarten as it is in high school. Put simply, too many absences at any age can aect a student’s chances for academic success and eventually for graduation.

We recognize that holidays are an important time for reconnecting with families far away. The costs of plane tickets often inuence when you want to travel. But keep in mind the costs to your children’s education if they miss too much school—and the message you will be sending about the importance of attendance. Even if you have a homework packet from the teacher, it doesn’t make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom.

Our teachers will be teaching, and our students will be learning, right up until vacation starts and the rst day back. You can help us convey that message. This holiday season, give the gift of an education and the habit of attendance.

Sincerely,Brenda Blackmon, Assistant Principal

Kinder Gifted & Talented ScreeningKindergarten students will be screened for Gifted & Talented services throughout the fall semester. Kindergarten screening is not based on requests or nomination, and there is no action required on the part of parents. Students will be evaluated for problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and cognitive maturity.

If your Kindergarten student meets the minimum criteria on the screening tasks, you will be notied in writing by January 6th that further testing is in order. At that point, you will receive required forms to complete and return in order to continue with the testing process.

If you have any questions about the GT Screening process for Kindergarten, contact Mrs. Bilyeu at [email protected].

How is the virtual library better than the Internet?

Each resource is reliable, current, appropriate, and relevant to the elementary curriculum. The same cannot be said about all websites found on the Internet.

The LES Library has electronic books! We also have other great online resources. Check them out!
