IN THE ZONE
Hello Area 1 Community Members,
Wow… what a month August turned out to be!!!! We had the Grand Opening of the Human Performance Center located at the Hanson Field House August 9th and what a great day that was with a lot of a endance, many demonstrations and healthy foods!!! en, just 8 days later on 17 August, we opened up the Casey Bowling Center as the “Buccaneer Bowl,” featuring a new Pirate theme, great looking lanes and masks, a beautiful new lounge/game room, a theater room that can be rented for special events and a new menu that has great selections
to choose from!!!! Finally, we ended the month with a big celebration- the Labor Day Festival!!! We at Family and MWR are constantly looking to be er “YOUR” quality of life and very much appreciate all the input you provide us by speaking to our team members, submi ing ice comment cards or simply by calling me at the o ce! I ask that you continue to do that and keep us on target with your needs; be it recreation, leisure, tness, family support or child care. So enjoy the month of September with all the programs, services and events that are listed in this super “In e Zone” magazine!!

DMZ Tour Guidelines
- When viewing the Conference Room, do not touch any equipment belonging to North Korea.
- Do not speak with, make any gesture toward, approach or respond to personnel from the other side.
- Military or other offi cial considerations may prevent entry into the JSA.
- Casual clothes, such as ripped jeans, sleeveless shirts, miniskirts, short pants, military clothes, and sandal/slippers are not permitted during the tour.
- Shaggy or unkempt hair is not allowed.
- Children under 10 years of age are not allowed.
The Joint Security Area (JSA)The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800
meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was
signed, the JSA became a neutral location where
guards from both sides were allowed to move about
freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone
(DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL)
was originally not clearly marked.
That changed after North Korean guards murdered
two United Nations Command (UNC) offi cers with
axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder
Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and
that marking system continues until today.
The only place where border crossings are allowed
is inside the conference buildings of the Military
Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is
marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter
high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout
the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with
MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the
JSA and no more than thirty fi ve armed guards can
be present on each side.
The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations
between the North and South. A variety of political
and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red
Cross meetings are held in the JSA.
Observation Post (OP) DoraAs the northernmost observatory in South Korea,
OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the
closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village
and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead
as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong
Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il
Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from
Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978.
It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2
meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an
army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean
Soldiers to pass through within an hour.
The Third Tunnel is the largest one discovered so
far, indicating North Korea’s desire to invade Seoul
during that time.

CAMP RED CLOUD -- A new state-of-the-art
fi tness facility where Soldiers and civilians can do
cutting-edge workouts best-suited to the day-
to-day physical needs of their jobs and lifestyle
opened last month at Camp Casey.
The 6,637-square-foot Health and Human
Performance Center (HHPC) is located in bldg. 3030,
the renovated former taekwondo training facility
next door to the Hanson Fitness Center.
The center features a large room for functional
fi tness workouts, a cardiovascular workout area,
a fl exibility and recovery room for stretching, and
a "stress-less" area. Group exercise programs,
biofeedback "stress" cards, health and fi tness
brochures, and pamphlets on therapeutic
rehabilitation are available.
The center has kettle bells, medicine balls,
stability balls, Bosu balls, balance boards, resistance
bands, dumbbells, jump ropes; Olympic rings,
TRX suspension bands, sandbags, assisted pull-up
ropes, heavy ropes, plyometric boxes, hurdles,
speed ladders; a glute-ham developer, foam rollers,
a lower-back exercise machine and abdominal
strengthening machine; a boxing station with
a heavy bag and speed bag; stationary bikes, a
rowing machine, adjustable fl at benches, a weight-
lifting platform and barbell and other health and
fi tness equipment.
"It's not your traditional fi tness center," says
Robert Gobble, health and fi tness director with
the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area 1's
Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and
Recreation.
"Everything in the facility is tailored toward
improving your overall health and wellness by
focusing on core stability and multi-joint exercises,"
Gobble says.
In a functional fi tness workout, said Gobble,
"you do exercises that kind of mimic what you do

in everyday life. In other words, if you have to get
in and out of your seat a lot, then you might want
to do some squats. If you have to stoop over and
pick up a lot of things, then you should work with
sandbags, the kettle bells, the TRX or the heavy
ropes. There are a lot of different things you can
work with.
"Functional training simply means that you do
things in the exercise room to help you become
more effi cient in your daily life," he says.
It's in the functional fi tness room that the TRX
gear is set up along with the majority of the
center's other equipment.
The cardio room is equipped with two treadmills,
three stationary bikes, a Jacob's Ladder -- a
machine whose rungs are in continual motion --
and a seated rower.
The fl exibility and recovery room is set up for
stretching workouts but also has massage rollers,
balancing equipment and exercise mats, physio-
balls, a sit-up bar, and slant boards.
The "stress-less" area has two massage chairs
with electronic controls.
"They're well-padded and comfortable, like a
reclining chair, sort of vibrates gently to make you
feel better," Gobble says.
There’s also a vibrating "power plate” in the
room as well.
"You stand on it and it vibrates," says Gobble.
"Good for working on fl exibility, strength, massage
and rehab."
Also available at the center are public health
brochures with key information on things like heart
disease, kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke,
hypertension, asthma, general strengthening,
the benefi ts of walking, quitting smoking,
good nutrition, and guidelines on therapeutic
rehabilitation, says Gobble.
"We're trying to promote health. People need
to be informed. By having public health brochures
available that people can read when they come in
there, it's benefi cial.
"There are three things we want people to
do: be informed, take action and feel better. Be
informed by asking questions and reading the
public health brochures; take action by engaging in
physical activity and exercise, and eating healthier;
and feeling better as a result of changing behavior
and lifestyle." He says.
The Health and Human Performance Center
is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through
Friday.
"I think the importance of this is it meets the
needs of everyone," says Gobble. "Active-duty
Soldiers and Family members, couch potatoes,
moderate athletes, high-end athletes and power-
lifters all can benefi t. It meets their needs because
there us something here for everyone." Z

Minimizing the sugar in your diet is not as easy as
you might think. Sugar appears in almost every food
product in the local supermarket — even in foods
we consider healthy such as bread, fruit and dairy. A
diet high in sugar doesn’t just affect weight, it can
trigger premature aging, an increased risk of diabetes,
atherosclerosis, heart disease and even cataracts,
according to dietitian Brooke Alpert and Dr. Patricia
Farris.
They have devised a comprehensive, one-month
plan to wean readers of their sugar cravings. It starts
with a three-day Sugar Fix, followed by a three-day
BOOKS RecommendedReading cold-turkey sugar elimination period that helps
recalibrate our taste buds. There is also a three-day
Skin Fix to counteract sugar-related skin damage.
After the initial cleanse, there is a four-week schedule
of menu plans, including 50 recipes, to reeducate
ourselves about which foods to eat and which ones to
eliminate.
Many people consume sugar for an energy boost,
and then deal with the inevitable crash that follows.
According to the authors, the best way to keep
energy levels up is to keep your blood sugars stable
and avoid the highs and lows of a sugar high. If
you follow their plan, you can replace a candy bar
with a healthy dose of lean proteins, veggies and
whole grains, all guaranteed to keep you energized
throughout the day.
Put another way, put down that candy bar and pick
up a carrot.
It’s also important to avoid artifi cial sugars since
they often contain fructose, an ingredient that
promotes unhealthy belly fat and increases the risk
for insulin-resistance, diabetes and heart disease.
“The Sugar Detox” is a sensible approach, and the
bottom line is that eliminating sugar is one of the
best ways to improve general health.

The USAG Red Cloud, Casey and Area 1 Family

Expo ‘13 at the Camp Casey Gateway Club on
Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The free event is open to all members of the USAG Red
Cloud and Area 1 community.
“The Family & MWR Department
provides a wide variety of
outstanding facilities, programs and
activities for every member of the
family. The purpose of the Family &
MWR Expo is to let everyone in our
community know that Family & MWR
is dedicated to delivering quality recreational programs
and services to all authorized patrons,” says Jammie

Family & MWR Expo ’13 will feature a festive, informative
atmosphere where attendees can see fi rst-hand the many Family
& MWR recreational opportunities the USAG-RC/Area 1 Family &
MWR Department has available for them. Visitors will be able
to interact one-on-one with Family & MWR managers to get a
better understanding of programs, activities and services they
offer and to provide valuable feedback.
“This is a great opportunity for patrons to let us know what
we’re doing right, and where we can make improvements.”
Hawkins says.

“I invite everyone to visit the Expo, enjoy
the experience and see fi rst-hand the many
outstanding programs and services we have to
offer. Our goal is to make Area l the best place
to live, work and play in Korea.”
In true expo fashion, free gifts will be
distributed to all attendees, plus special
drawings will be held throughout the day for
additional prizes. Everyone who attends will
receive a free tote bag to be used to carry a
variety of free gifts and informational material
available at many of the 40-plus booths
throughout the Gateway Club complex.
Several commercial sponsors, including the
Navy Federal Credit Union, Julie’s Realty and
Music Chongo Tongshin have already signed
on, giving visitors an opportunity to know
fi rst-hand about the products and services they
offer.
“We’re fortunate to have local businesses
in our community who actively support and
participate in Family & MWR activities. Their
help and support means we can continue to
provide quality programs for Soldiers and their
Families even during these fi nancially trying
times,” Hawkins says.
Upon entering the Expo, visitors will
also receive their own Family & MWR Expo
“Passport” to be used later in the day for a
grand prize drawing, and will also have a
chance to ‘Spin the Giant Wheel’ for a free
prize.
Attendees will be able to sample food
products from several Family & MWR club
and restaurant facilities, receive special
discount coupons for many Family & MWR
products and services and even participate
40 USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
in a host of fun, interactive activities during the daylong event.
“We want everyone to not only experience a taste of Family & MWR, but we also
want them to have fun in the process. We’ll have video game completion, health
and fi tness equipment for attendees to try out, information about travel and tours
plus carnival games and arts and crafts demonstrations, to name a few of the many
activities we’ll have available,” says Frank A. DeSilva, Family & MWR Marketing
Director and Family & MWR Expo Coordinator.
“The idea for an Family & MWR Expo came about because our Marketing team
realized that many Soldiers and Family members may not be familiar with some
of our facilities or programs, even though they may have been stationed here for
several months. Because the Garrison is spread out over several installations from
Camp Hovey to Camp Stanley, it’s often diffi cult for
patrons to see and experience all the things Family &
MWR has to offer. The Family & MWR EXPO,” DeSilva
says, “will give patrons a better idea of what’s out
there for them.”
“It’s one thing to advertise and promote our many
quality facilities and services with visual material and
via the Internet, but being able to see fi rst-hand what
we have to offer and to meet managers one-on-one
to answer questions or concerns is the best way to
showcase what we have. Customers will appreciate
being able to see for themselves all the things we do
in one place at one time,” DeSilva continued.
“Newcomers to USAG Red Cloud, Casey and Area 1
will fi nd the Family & MWR Expo especially appealing,
but others who have been here longer will also learn
things about Family & MWR they never knew before.
That,” says DeSilva, “is the main purpose of the
Family & MWR Expo: to inform and entertain.”
“It’s a perfect way to discover Family & MWR
without driving out to each installation. In a sense,
we’re bringing Family & MWR to our customers.
That’s what marketing is all about,” DeSilva
concluded. Z

sports tournaments, holiday
celebrations, fun runs and
recreational trips.
Community Service - Volunteer hours are acquired
through outreach programs,
on and off post such as a Soup
Kitchen service outside Camp
Stanley serving approximately
300 local nationals at a subway
station twice a month.
Quality of Life (QOL) – Issues
and concerns are brought up,
discussed and reported to senior
military advisors at weekly
council meetings to ensure Single
and Unaccompanied Soldiers
have a forum to address QOL
concerns.

INSURANCE REVIEW Whether it’s homeowner or auto insurance,
it’s smart to check your coverage once a year to
make sure it’s what you need — and at the most
economical cost.
Your home is where most changes are likely
to occur during a year. Update your inventory
photos and compare them to previous ones as a
reminder of changes. Take pictures of each room,
using the biggest photo setting your camera can
handle. (That way, details can be zoomed in on
later.) Open cabinets, especially those that hold
electronics. Get shots of the model and serial
numbers on the back, and turn the electronics on
so the lights show they’re working. Take close-ups
of collectibles such as china or vintage artwork
with artist signature. Save the photos to CD and
store in a bank box.
Don’t assume that new, expensive possessions
will be covered by your standard homeowner
policy. You might need a special rider for artwork
or musical instruments.
Take exterior photos of your home as well. Hold
up a newspaper for the fi rst photo with the date
showing to prove when the photo was taken.
Consider whether you still need total coverage
on your vehicle. Once your vehicle is older
(and paid for) with a lower value, it might not
be worthwhile to have the replacement value
covered. Ask your agent what coverage is required
in your state. Mention any changes, such as a teen
driver going off to college, or low-mileage driving.
Don’t lie on any application. Don’t even hedge
and leave out something important, because
future claims will be denied.
Be aware of what isn’t covered by any potential
policy. Compare item by item to what you
currently have.
Before you bail on your current insurance
company, ask if it will give you a discount to
stay. If you combine policies (home and auto, for
example) with one company, you often can get a
discount. Ask about steps you can take to lower
your current policy expenses, for example selling
an expensive musical instrument you no longer
play or installing home security.
Check multiple sources for economical
insurance, including your group affi liations. If
you’re former military, look into your eligibility for
insurance with USAA.
If you’ve had fi nancial setbacks to the extent
that they’ve affected your credit rating, it also will
affect your insurance rates.
Beware applying online. If possible, check
agents near you that you can visit in person.

FY14
Army FAmily Action PlAnCONFERENCE
Army Family Action Plan (AFAP) is an Army-wide initiative to identify issues of concern to improve the
overall Quality of Life for Soldiers, Family members, Retirees and DA Civilians.
AFAP gives you an opportunity to voice your concerns related to USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 Community
or Big Army. This is your chance to let local or Army leadership know that what is working, what is not and
share your ideas about how to fix it. The Garrison Commander sees to it that pertinent issues are worked
toward resolution.
USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 conducts an AFAP conference every year. This year’s conference is scheduled for
October 24-25, 2013 at the USAG Casey Community Activity Center.
AFAP brings people from all different walks of Army life together, making sure that everyone is represented
in predetermined groups. Delegates are made up of Active Duty, Family Members, Retirees and DA Civilians
from USAG Red Cloud and Area 1. The delegates are charged with working together in set groups to review
and prioritize issues which are presented to the Garrison Commander at a brief-out session on the second
day of the conference.
Issues are collected at the installation level and issues may be resolved locally or Army-wide. Approximately
90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level and issues beyond the scope of this area are
forwarded to the Department of the Army for resolution.
Last year, 39 AFAP issues were submitted to the FY13 AFAP conference and 30 issues were closed as
“Complete” and 9 issues were closed as “Closed / Unattainable”.
Want to get involved? You can submit an issue by logging on to the AFAP Issue Management Information
System at: https://www.myarmyonesource.com/skins/aos2/display.aspx?ModuleID=a10586da-73a1-4402-9107-
58b7bf046a21&action=submit , or by filling out an issue sheet and drop it in an AFAP submission box. AFAP
issue boxes will be located at your local Commissary, Post Exchange, and ACS.
