The plane crashedaround 12:23 p.m. near therunway at Aspen/PitkinCounty Airport, said AlexBurchetta, director of oper-ations at the Pitkin CountySheriff’s Office. The planeflipped on its back andburst into flames.

The co-pilot who diedwas Sergio Carranza Bra-bata, 54, of Mexico, Bur-chetta said. The second co-pilot suffered moderate tosevere injuries, and a pas-

senger – also a pilot – hadinjuries that were less se-vere, officials said. Bothwere taken to Aspen ValleyHospital and later trans-ferred to other hospitals, anAspen Valley spokeswomansaid.

The plane, a CanadairCL-600, took off from Adol-fo López Mateos Interna-tional Airport in Toluca,Mexico, then traveled toTucson, Ariz., before flyingto Aspen, said Allen Kenitz-er, a spokesman for the Fed-eral Aviation Administra-tion.

MINNEAPOLIS ● This hardycity, more or less unfazedby Sunday’s subzero tem-peratures, is taking nochances with the weatherforecast for today, whenthe low is predicted to beminus 24 and the wind chillcould hit minus 50.

Gov. Mark Dayton hasordered schools closedstatewide; one big employ-er, 3M, has told employeesto stay home; and Minnea-polis has shut its parks tokeep people indoors.

“This is the first time wehave used the ‘particularlydangerous situation’(PDS) wording with aWind Chill Warning,” theNational Weather Servicetweeted Sunday. Windchills farther north couldapproach minus 65, fore-casters said, warning thatexposed flesh would freezein minutes.

With some of the coldestweather in years surgingacross the nation’s midsec-tion and into the East andSouth, delays and closingsalready were set. For muchof the Midwest, the deepfreeze and efforts to pre-pare for it have begun.

Temperatures were pre-dicted to be minus 15 atChicago’s O’Hare Interna-tional Airport by dawn to-day, prompting major uni-versities and hundreds ofprivate schools, businessesand day care centers to an-nounce they would shutdown. Chicago PublicSchools officials joinedthem late in the day afterwithering criticism fromthe teachers union.

At O’Hare Airport, 1,200flights – about half the totaltraffic – were canceled asof late Sunday afternoon, according to flight trackerFlightAware. About half ofscheduled departures andlandings at airports in St.Louis and Indianapoliswere canceled late Sunday.

In New York, a planefrom Toronto landed atKennedy InternationalAirport and slid into snowas it turned onto a taxiway. No one was injured.

Minnesota’s prepara-tions qualified as unusual, although not unpreceden-ted, in a state whose resi-dents famously take win-ters in stride. The last timea governor orderedschools closed statewidewas 1997.

“I’ve lived here for sixyears, and I’ve never heardof the cold closing any-thing,” said Kim Glynn, aphysician who was at theMall of America in Bloo-mington with her husbandand two children.

But Sunday was bril-liantly crisp and sunny, per-fect for hockey on the fro-zen Lake of the Isles in thecity’s Kenwood section, where Nelson Fox, KyleGranberger and Tony Por-ter were skating in theearly afternoon, with thetemperature at minus 7.

“It’s about the only thingto do in Minnesota in thewintertime,” said Fox, 24,who runs a Web develop-ment company with Gran-berger.

A warming trailer at theedge of the lake was closed, perhaps to discourage thiskind of activity.

On a trail around thelake, at least two people inheavy clothing – includingski masks – were jogging, and a bicyclist could beseen in the distance. A cou-ple of dog walkers trudgedacross snow.

“You’ve got to embracewhere you live. You can’trun away from it,” saidNate Peterson, a middleschool social studies teach-er. “Otherwise, you mightas well move to Florida.”

Peterson, his wife, Jen,and their 2-year-old,Leighton, weren’t exactly

embracing the cold, butthey hadn’t run away, ei-ther. They had ventured tothe Mall of America, one ofthe largest shopping cen-ters in the United States, which was filling rapidlySunday as the prospect of aday at home loomed.

“Normally on the week-end, we go sledding, play inthe snow,” Peterson said.On Saturday, the familyhad gone to the zoo, butthat will be closed today aswell, because part of it isoutdoors. Today was look-ing like a day of indoorknee hockey and arts andcrafts.

“People are gutsy. Peo-ple try to show how toughthey are,” Peterson said.“When it’s this … cold, to usit’s not worth it.”

And there will be nohockey today for Fox, al-though not because of thecold.

“I’m flying to Vegas,” hesaid. “Family vacation.”From there, he said, hewould be heading to Tahiti.
