Confession of SinMost High God, you are our Sovereign King. You created us in love that we might know you and walk in your ways. Yet we are often weak, proud, rebellious children. We have all like sheep gone astray and turned to our own way. You have laid upon Jesus all of our sin and iniquity. How we thank you for the certain hope of the gospel. We praise you that the grace of your Son Jesus is greater than all our sin. We thank you that your power within us is mightier than the power of the Evil One. Reign in our hearts that we might glorify your name to a broken, skeptical world. Amen.

34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”

Sheep Without a Shepherd

Deuteronomy 1:9-189 “At that time I said to you, ‘I am not able to bear you by myself. 10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. 11 May the Lord, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you! 12 How can I bear by myself the weight and burden of you and your strife?

13 Choose for your tribes wise, understanding, and experienced men, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 And you answered me, ‘The thing that you have spoken is good for us to do.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and set them as heads over you, commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, commanders of tens, and officers, throughout your tribes.

16 And I charged your judges at that time, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him. 17 You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be intimidated by anyone, for the judgment is God's. God has always used undershepherds to lead His people

Mark 10:42-4542 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The Need for Shepherds (vv.9-14)

Matt 9:3636 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
