Sweet Dreamsat Barber

G eorge Barber had a dream - to have a place to drive race cars and ride motorbikes in his own state, create a park-like setting around it, and give back to his community.

Barber Motorsports Park is a dream come true. Mr. Barber was racing sports cars in Europe back in the 1970s, when his father died suddenly. He had no choice but to give up his passion for racing and focus on running the family business – Barber Dairy Company.

Barber Dairies started in the 1930s. The dairy housed a large ice plant, which produced enough ice to keep the pasteurized milk, buttermilk, butter, cottage cheese and other dairy products cold on company delivery trucks. As the oldest dairy in Alabama, Barber Dairies has a respected history of delivering the best in dairy products in Alabama and parts of Mississippi, Georgia and Florida.

Staying true to his love of motor vehicles, Bar-ber began collecting and restoring classic cars in 1989, but his interest soon turned to motorcycles. He decided to race some of his vintage motorcycles and put together a race team to represent Barber Dairies. It was the spark for the Barber collection, whose mission was to reflect the history of motorcycles from a global perspective. The collection soon grew out of its space in an old warehouse in Birmingham and needed a new home.

Fast forward to 2003 and after many years of hard work and planning Geroge Barber’s dream of a place for his love of motorsports came to fruition. Barber Motorsports Park is a world-renowned facil-ity and hosts a number of world-class motorsports events such as the AMA Superbike Classic, IMSA sports cars, Legends of Motorsports, kart racing and the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. spectator-friendly circuit is set within a perfectly manicured and sculpted landscape with heavily wooded surroundings that is second to none.

The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in its current form is located on the premises of the lovely Barber Motorsports Park, and now currently houses 1400+ motorcycles. It is considered the largest motorcycle museum in the world, with the greatest vintage Lotus racecar collection in N. America. With over 7000 motorcycle books and more, the Barber Museum Research Library & Archives contains one of the largest collections of motorcycle literature in the world.

Our AHRMA races at Barber Motorsports park are divided up in many ways – roadracing, cross country, vintage motocross and trials events. On the roadracing side, the age of the motorcycles, displacement, brands, even sidecars and a taste of the future with electric-powered eMotoRacing bikes, are all showcased. Take a walk through the paddock to see all of the bikes up-close. Our motorbike pilots range in age from “newbies” in their 20s to experienced veterans in their 70s.

This weekend of vintage motorcycle racing will undoubtedly renew excitement for these historical machines, while providing lively competition for all.

Old Technology Meets New with CPL

Conner’s wife Barbara is the owner of Barbara Conner Jewelry. She races a 1954 Harley KHK in Classic ‘60s 650 and is one of the first wom-en to win an AHRMA #1 plate.

Barbara Conner Jewelry is the Classic ‘60s 650 class sponsor Barbara typically has samples of her work at the track, and many of the racers and partic-ipatants wear her pieces. She started racing on a 1969 Honda CL350 prepared by Toad Town Racing’s Gary Swan and worked with Doug Polen for over three years on her race craft. Barbara is sporting the white #96 Harley KHK this weekend.

AHRMA racer Luke Conner is the founder of CPL Systems, Inc., a resource conservation company that works with Fortune 100 companies and

others by supplying technology for the direct use of alternate and bio-fuels, as well as energy conserva-tion initiatives that reduce the carbon footprint of those companies’ plants.

CPL Systems is the AHRMA Historic Cup National Roadrace Series sponsor

Luke promotes and supports many of the AHR-MA races through Old Farts Racing, and typically brings eight (or so) motorcycles to the track to be raced by the likes of Barbara Conner, Gary Swan, Thad Wolff, Derek Stoot, Max Flinders, Tim Ivanoff, and many others. OF machinery includes a 1948

Harley WR, 1954 Harley KHK, 1956 Harley KHK, 2011 Harley XR1200, 2009 Triumph Thruxton, 1976

Triumph T140, 2002 Ducati 748, 2013 Triumph 675 Daytona, and many others. Luke sports

the #69 Harleys, Triumphs and Ducati.

In January of 1989, the paperwork was drafted, and the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association, Ltd., became the member-owned, not-for-profit organization that we know today. In 2014, we celebrated our Silver Jubilee – that’s right, we’ve been providing on-track classic-bike competition now for 26 years!

On the roadracing side, our program showcases everything from the pre-1940 bikes dominated in this country by American iron (but also open to the exotic European, even supercharged machinery), all the way up to the early-’90s Superbikes. It’s a grand selection of genuinely-historic machinery, displayed on the track by very-talented “Clubman” riders, super-accomplished National-caliber pilots, former factory-backed riders, and even World Champions.

In addition to the classic classes, AHRMA offers the

country’s best selection of alternative modern racing, including Sound of Singles, Battle of Twins and Sound of Thunder motorcycles. And, new for the 2014 season, we’re hosting an exhibition class of cutting-edge electric bikes! Our celebration tour visits 10 of the country’s greatest venues, and will be experienced by tens of thousands of enthusiasts.

For riders who prefer to “do it in the dirt,” AHRMA’s comprehensive off-road program features vintage motocross, post vintage motocross, cross country, observed trials and dirt track racing. There will be over 90 races this season, all across the country, in a wide array of styles – AHRMA’s racing series cover it all!

As we look back on the 26 years of AHRMA, we have to thank the many people who have made massive contributions to making it happen. From top to bottom, this is certainly a volunteer-based operation, and it can’t be done without each and every one of them.

26 years on

It’s still about the bikes

Page 13: In the Paddock

Our main function remains the same: Educating the people, while showcasing the greatest, most-interesting motorcycles on Earth, typically at speed, with riders who want to do it the old-fashioned way. Folks who might have missed the experience the first time around are still treated to the sights, sounds and smells of yesteryear at each of our events. Amazingly, just over a quarter-century has passed, but we’re running forward with as much gusto as ever.

AHRMA’s Grand Marshal at the 2015 Barber Vintage Festival is former factory Britten racer Andrew Stroud. See the Hagerty Insurance-sponsored Britten display near the

racetrack control tower, join Stroud for lunch on Friday,

and keep an eye on track for his and

Stephen Briggs’ demonstration laps.
